Afternoon Tea
Hotel Café Royal’s award-winning afternoon tea is served in a unique setting, the Oscar Wilde Lounge. Dating back to 1865, this stunning room has been restored exquisitely to its original Louis XVI detailing. Hotel Café Royal has joined forces with French perfumer diptyque to create a new afternoon tea where taste and scent unite in harmony. The menu takes inspiration from diptyque’s most iconic scents. Service is accompanied by a live pianist and, dependent on tier booking, guests will receive a candle to take home.

Dress code: Smart/casual
Note: The returning time for each table is 1.5 hours. For group bookings kindly contact the hotel directly.

We came here for an afternoon tea experience, celebrating my sister’s birthday. Overall, the experience was excellent. Our server, Zico, was attentive but not hovering too much. The sandwiches were delicious. I found that the desserts were a little too sweet for my taste. However, the scones, clotted cream, and jam were spot on. The ambience is wonderful, absolutely stunning old world decor. This is on the pricey side, especially with the champagne. This was our first and only tea, so it is hard for me to compare. However, as tourists, we highly enjoyed this experience.

This has become my go-to spot for high tea when I visit London because the prices are reasonable, the service is outstanding, the offerings are yummy, and, honestly, the location is quite convenient to my everyday activities while in London.

Most attentive and seemingly happy staff. Nothing was too much for them , particularly Zachariah.
The afternoon tea was most enjoyable in wonderful surroundings although the chairs were rather low and uncomfortable.
Regardless, I would certainly return.

Excellent afternoon celebration of my husband’s birthday. Lovely staff who were meticulously correct , served delicious Bruce Cliquot champagne & great tea. Lovely visit but ladies downstairs loo needs attention & improved ventilation to improve the overall impression.

I was disappointed with this Afternoon tea. The service was very rushed, the first waiter talked so fast that we almost did not understand a word he said. The room in which the afternoon tea was served in was however magnificent. But, the soundlevel was quite high with the pianist playing FORTE to say the least. And, and this cannot be blamed on Hotel Café Royal, it felt like we were in a selfie-drenched environment with every table more concerned with taking selfies than enjoying afternoon tea. I got the feeling that this was somewhat of a tourist trap. But, all this aside, how was the food? It was...ok. The tea couldn´t possibly have been served after the correct time resulting in very "thin" taste. You were offered to eat as much as you could. However, the execution of the sandwiches and sweets were merely ok. I would not go back to this afternoon tea again.

The visit to Cafe Royal was a birthday treat for me and it certainly was a’treat.’ The ambience was fabulous - wonderful decor and fantastic flowers everywhere. The afternoon tea was absolutely lovely and our waiter was very attentive without being intrusive. There were far too many cakes to eat for the two of us and without us having to ask our waiter, he offered to box the remaining cakes for us to take home. My husband was able to sample the goodies! All in all a wonderful afternoon and will return for another celebration.

Me, my wife and my mother had the most wonderful experience at Cafe Royal's afternoon tea. The space is beautiful, food was just perfect and tea selection excellent. Most of all, our host Kilian was the absolute highlight with his kindness and attention to detail. He definitely made it a memorable time for all of us.

I have had afternoon tea at the Claridges a couple of times before but could not get a table this time. I chose Hotel Cafe Royal as it was rated 2nd to Claridges in London top 10 places for afternoon tea. In comparison, although staff were excellent, the flavour of sandwiches and cakes weren't so great. My colleagues however, who hand not experienced afternoon tea in such a reputable place before, enjoyed the food very much and thought that the service and venue were excellent.

Fabulous food- you get what you pay for but prices were good compared to other 5 star hotels in London. Staff made you feel welcome and special and could not do enough to make the experience memorable. Ambience is perfect a fantastic pianist in opulent surroundings as staff quietly but efficiently go about their business. A perfect afternoon tea to celebrate a special occasion or just for a spontaneous treat! I would like to pay particular mention to the lady who I made the original booking with (so helpful!) although I had to reschedule twice due to illness. And the receptionist whose desire to make our occasion special made it just so by accommodating our request for a corner table. And to our champagne waiter for his helpful recommendations and great service. But I should add that all the staff were excellent, it’s very unusual to find great consistency like this- service, food and ambience!

Not only were the sandwiches delicious, the patisserie beautiful as well as tasty, and plentiful options of interesting teas and champagne but the staff were just lovely - warm, welcoming, knowledgable and thoughtful, they did everything they could to make our evening special. It was a stunning historic setting too. Fantastic! We had a wonderful time and are thinking of making it an annual tradition.

I am a Londoner who recently booked an afternoon tea for two young family members who were visiting London together for the first time. I thought an afternoon tea would make a nice addition to their itinerary. I booked the festive tea with a glass of champagne for both. I joined later just for a cup of tea. This tea should have come to £130 plus service charge (£65 pp). Instead I was charged nearly £200. When I inquired why it was so much more expensive, it turned out that my young guests had been served top ups of the champagne without them requesting these. As my guests had never experienced an afternoon tea, they assumed the top ups were part of the package (after all I was paying a fortune!). I actually witnessed one of the top ups when I arrived but didn’t think too much of it until I saw the bill. I am happy to pay for what I have ordered, but I couldn’t help but feel that the Hotel Cafe Royal took advantage of my guests who were clearly new to this all, topping up their glasses without them asking for more champagne and then charging for each top up £15! Other hotels first ask you whether you want to have another glass and make it clear that the new glass will be charged extra. This hotel doesn’t so this and I find this dishonest, clearly cheating guests out of money. I would like to warn future guests for this. Be vigilant! This experience left a bad taste in my mouth and I will not recommend this hotel nor return there. For the money that Hotel Cafe Royal charges one can do so much better. I would recommend Claridges (nothing comes close), The Goring, The Connaught and The Landmark. Also the pianist was too loud. We could not carry on a conversation. Tea and food were fine but not refined or great. In summary: go elsewhere if you want to experience a top afternoon tea.
