Afternoon Tea at The Montague on the gardens
We ensure we pay proper respect to its ritual while offering some intriguing variations on the original.
This summer enjoy al fresco dining on our Garden Terrace, a wonderful retreat in the heart of the city, where better to enjoy a delicious Afternoon Tea, and perhaps a choice of tempting cocktails?
The place was quiet and nice at the terrace. However, food quality was not as good as we expected. You can ask for the refill of the food but not tea! We were just given hot water, so we had to keep drinking diluted tea.
Lovely experience while visiting from the States. Took a tour at the British Museum then walked to have tea and sandwiches. Atmosphere is wonderful, service splendid and food & sweets were tasty.
Afternoon tea was not tasty- pass on the safari, nothing special about it. Waiter was nice but the rest were a bit rude.
Nice tea. Cakes were ok. Sandwiches were very average. Lush, regal, 1950’s-esque decor and the place oozes vintage class though every so slightly dated but I guess that’s the look.
For £90, grossly overpriced for two and no additional recognition of the special event. Think £25-£35 ( the latter if the service was improved) each would have been a far more realistic / value for money experience. Service was ok, the lady serving us seemed rigid and not warm but I guess everyone’s different and maybe she was having a bad day.
Just that at that price bracket, you expect an impeccable service. The door staff however were lovely and most professional and warm.
Enjoyed afternoon tea but did booked the terrace for special 60th birthday was disappointed we didn't get to sit there was offered indoor table which we accepted food was good
I was disappointed to be squished into a table meant for for when we had reservations for five. I made reservations more than seven weeks ago and they were surprised and didn’t immediately find us on the reservation list. Therefore, they were made to sit in a table that was less than comfortable. Tea was lovely and food was tasty however
Really nice tea room with leopard wallpaper! The safari afternoon tea was great!
Beautiful place but very ordinary afternoon tea. Service slow and we waited more than 30min for the food to arrive. Selection of tea was quite limited too. I don't think it is a good value for money paid.
Great scones and tea!! A little pricey, but not absurd.
Such a cute tea room. Lovely selection of sandwiches and pastries. The afternoon tea is too much for one person so I’d advise sharing between 2.
A hidden gem for afternoon tea , lovely ambience and attentive staff . Food excellent for choice and quality. Conservatory and garden terraces an added bonus.
Ordered afternoon tea set. The tea was alright (Jasmine and Earl Grey), but food wasn't. Scones were fine, but cakes were alternately somewhat tasteless, or far too sweet and cloying. The sandwiches themselves were boring, tremendously average, not especially fresh. Terrace was quite pleasant, waiters were good, but took rather long to get things prepared, and not easy to get their attention.
The staff at the Montague were wonderful and accommodating, despite us arriving one hour later than our reservation due to a time zone mix-up on our part. Our family enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea: a nice selection of sandwiches, scones, and cakes along with enough tea to revive us for a late evening visit at the British Museum next door. The atmosphere was refined without being stuffy, and it turned out to be a perfect, relaxing way to start our London vacation. Even the jet-lagged kids in our group enjoyed the experience.
It was fabulous. A wonderful experience. Excellent service.
Amazing environment, beautiful setting, but food could improve considering the price. It was very mediocre.
The best experience of afternoon tea I've ever had in London! The staff is so patient, they bring the tea box for you to smell and choose which one you prefer. There are various kinds of tea, the dessert is not too sweet not too light, just about perfect. I have tried the high price afternoon tea not value for money at all, but this place I would recommend to my friends and will come back again.
I used this place to afternoon tea with my friend.
Staff is very kind. The food was also very delicious.
I was very happy because my friend was pleased.
Lovely location, excellent service... but really, really hard to justify the price unless you are in an "all you can eat" kind of mood, in which case they'll keep serving whatever you like off the menu. I guess we just wanted a few sandwiches and bit of cake each, so that's all we had for £35 x 3.
Really enjoy everything.
We feel so cozy staying here.
Delicate tea room with good location.
Wonderfull and quiet atmosphere. Just what we needed for an afternoon tea. Excellent service, - great staff.
We went to the Montague to celebrate our daughter’s birthday and we were happy with our experience overall. The service was excellent and the food plentiful. The sandwiches were good and scones really lovely, unfortunately, the cakes were not particularly good. There was plenty of choice (7 in all I think) but we really only enjoyed 3 of them, sadly.
I have given the Montague 4 stars because of this but I do want to point out that overall, it was good value for money and the scones especially were excellent. They offer plenty more of everything, so my advice would be to have more scones and less cake!
Many thanks to the Montague for marking our daughters birthday with a little cake and candle!
My daughter was thrilled with the attention she got from the staff as a birthday girl. The menu was perfect.
excellent scone! definitely enjoyed my afternoon tea there! high recommended!
We were looking for an afternoon tea spot that seemed casual and a lovely environment at the same time. The spa was perfect for us. The service was excellent and the food was perfect. These might've been the best scones that I've ever eaten and the sandwiches and pastries be lovely too.for afternoon tea I would recommend this restaurant.
Wonderful tea and wonderful service! I can't wait to go back. Very elegant restaurant and servers are very helpful with explaining everything.
Food and service was great. It was a very beautiful setting for afternoon tea. Would definitely recommend to everyone.
it was a nice welcoming atmosphere. the sandwiches are not only classical but nice twist in there and the cakes, as well. we had a refreshed tea and another plates of sandwiches but all inclusive! they said that as well as cakes we will be able to have another plate. it was a good time with nice service. it would be also nice to get there in Summer sitting outsite in the garden! we shall be there again in the summer! many thanks.
I brought a friend in for her birthday dinner. The food was as amazing as it was on my first trip there and this is my 5th time there.
I don't know how they do such great things in that tiny kitchen. Cocktail are inventive and truly delicious. Wonderful place.
Beautiful hotel, lovely food. Good selection of tea, and they brought a box before we ordered so we could smell the difference, which was a good idea.
Only problem was that all except one staff seemed impatient, and no one was really tending us (we were on the balcony with another group, at some point both tables wet out of food nd water and we had to go find someone).
Upon initial arrival Service was grand, people staff were very attentive and friendly, a lovely lady offered to take our coats and then brought the ticket to the table, another a woman quickly came over to explain the tea's and let us smell each, a timer was given to us to then properly brew our tea to perfection. The tea sandwiches came out, the bread was slightly stale, and not very nice. At that same time our scones were brought, this meant that they were cold by the time we finished our sandwhiches. The desserts were well presented, but too sweet to eat (and this is coming from someone who has a sweet tooth ;)
I think whilst we were eating there was a shift change in staff? It took 20 minutes for us to get new staffs attention to pay, and infact we had to get up and go into the other room to ask for our bill. Once we paid we asked her for our coats, she rudely rolled her eyes as if we were causing her great inconveiniences- sighed, said sure, grabbed the receipt and promptly returned with our coats. It was a very awkward experience. Maybe they were short staffed, but having worked in hospitality I consider it very rude and unprofessional to treat guests this way.
Maybe I have been spoiled, having been to places such as The Langham, The Ritz, and Sketch for high tea... but the reviews I had read online for the montague on the gardens did not match up to the unsatisfactory experience which we had.
