What Insiders Are Saying
The incredible People Watching available at Balthazar makes scrunching into a tiny table and overpaying for brunch totally worth it. Say whatever you want about this place, you can’t take away the fact that the kitchen gets it done.
The perfect location for the perfect, downtown, Sunday brunch to entertain an overseas visitor.
We had a very nice Father's Day brunch at Balthazar. We did not have to wait to be seated and once we were able to order, our food did not take a long time. Portions are ample and the food was very good. We will go back.
The food was good but not great. And the prices were very very high which therefore makes the food not worth what we paid. The service was okay but I had ask several times for refills and to have the check. I would not recommend this spot.
We haven’t been to Balthazar in years. Not quite as remarkable as it was in the past with some special touches missing now.
Buen ambiente, la comida bien, pero no sorprendente
The venue is nice, the service is quite good, the food is fantastic, but... it was freezing! I dont know why, but this made us uncomfortable and we decided to leave as soon as we finished our desert.
Been here a few times in past visits to the city. Feels like they are sitting on their laurels a bit nowadays - atmosphere lacks warmth and food decidedly average - esp for the price. Disappointing first night experience back in the city
Fun scene. Food is very tasty and the service is very good. Great option in SoHo. Would go there again.
Balthazar is always a choice when we are in NY but now was different because we met Luis from México. So Nice and was a pleasure to be served by him and we will not forget. Thanks.
I made the reservation to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. Since I couldn’t be with her, I wanted her to go someplace filled with special memories that we share. Balthazar’s was my first choice, and they didn’t disappoint. My two daughters went together, and the birthday girl was treated like a princess. Tbh, that is how we’ve always been treated there. The food was delicious and the iced lattes were superior. It was yet another delightful visit to this NYC gem!
Fathers Day Celebration
We have been to Balthazar multiple times. The service is always impeccable! The food is always well presented and delicious. We have tried about everything on the menu over the years and you can’t go wrong with anything. We see familiar faces each time we’ve been here. It says a lot about staff retention in an extremely cut throat competitive restaurant business.
Food and ambiance was perfect as usual. When paying I was told their system was down and they needed to charge me manually; ended up checking my bank statement to see that I had been charged 5 times for a total of $850. Had to call the restaurant 3 times before I was contacted by the general manager. He was very friendly but I was really disappointed to have had to reach out multiple times (and deal with unfriendly staff that did not even so much as apologize for their mistake when I called) in order to get the issue sorted. Love Balthazar but will not be returning for a while.
Alway a classic.
Incredible restaurant for date night and the food (steak frites) was delicious. The only downside was the tables were slightly closer together than ideal, but this is probably typical for any restaurant in NYC. I’d highly recommend this place!
Awesome experience for our trip to NYC with family and friends!
Always great in every way. A real treat every time!
Exceptional food and great service - always visit when we come to New York
Came here for dinner for my birthday. Great food, NYC scene, very lively atmosphere.
Visited for lunch. While still very good, I would have to say not up to their usual standards. It was extremely crowded so maybe that’s why, but I found the service to be a little lacking. The food was nothing special. I ordered oysters and a grilled ham and gruyere sandwich. To be perfectly honest, the sandwich was more akin to diner food.
Still very expensive. Maybe dinner is more appealing.
Perfect dinner to celebrate 16th Birthday!!!
Balthazar is unique. Always French always a big joy..
Although the food was good, it was on the expensive side for lunch time dining. We also were not pleased with the service at all. Our waiter kept filling our water glasses every two minutes and spilling water all over us and the table because he was in such a hurry. It was quite annoying.
We are not local to NYC, but, we always try to visit Balthazar when we visit. My wife could live on their breakfast bread basket alone. One of my "go-to" dishes is the Nicoise salad. Although, we always have a wonderful experience, this last time, the restaurant went way, way over and above what was reasonable to make our visit special. First of all, we had a reservation for four people. We hadn't heard back from our friends (a mom and her toddler), so, they found us a lovely table for two. Halfway through our lunch at nearly 1:00pm, our friend and child arrived to a packed restaurant. Amazingly, the staff quickly got together and moved our food to a larger table, brought a high chair for the baby, and continued on as if it was nothing out of the ordinary. OMG, it was so amazing. Balthazar took a difficult situation, none of which was their fault, and made it work. I will never forget that. I honestly cannot imagine many restaurants being so understanding and accommodating with a full restaurant during a peak dining time. Needless to say, my wife and I love Balthazar even more than before. Here is a restaurant that has been a SoHo gem for decades. They probably could rest on their laurels, but, they haven't missed a step in the quality of their food or their service.
muy buena la comida y el lugar
I think this restaurant has had its day and been taken over by much better places to dine. It is living on its popularity but doesn’t come up to standard any more. The food was average, the service not great and it was expensive for what it was. It was recommended by lots of friends but none of them had been for some time. I wouldn’t go back, not because it was bad but because there are much better options in NYC.
Though 7 pm is early for dinner, it’s a great time to go to Balthazar before a show. We were there the other night before seeing “Slash” at Joe’s Pub, and brought my brother visiting from Boston. We had celebratory oysters and great conversation, in a quiet spot on a banquette.
Balthazar has become a family tradition over the years, the mise en scene always just right, designed to feel a little like old New York, a little like old Paris.
everything great, food, service... what a place!!!
Warm goat cheese and caramelized onion tart is a must -
Amazing food and service. Gorgeous restaurant
Great ambience, food good enough, a bit loud
We belong to the category, which is coming to the restaurant to taste, to be surprised. Nothing surprising in menu. Good taste, fresh food. Could be because of branch. Noisy. Decoration is nice, typical brasserie. Expected a bit more. Previous visit was about 12 years ago.
delicious food, 100 points for escargot, beef tartare and french fries ... A little bit disappointed with the eggs florentine, actually they were nothing special for their price. I think everything is too expensive and the restaurant is too noisy. Despite this, You can feel the french atmosphere and i would go back again!
We had a divine dinner at Balthazar last visit to NYC and really wanted to try their Sunday brunch. It did not disappoint. We loved everything we ordered but especially, the warm goat cheese tart.
Just excellent. Classic staple in every NY trip. Only good things to report. Don't miss it!
Attentive and kind service. Delicious food. Wonderful ambience. A fabulous time was had - cannot wait to return.
I love this place. How could you not?
paris bistro's are much smaller and more intimate. with that said, the food was good but it was a little crowded.
