What Insiders Are Saying
The incredible People Watching available at Balthazar makes scrunching into a tiny table and overpaying for brunch totally worth it. Say whatever you want about this place, you can’t take away the fact that the kitchen gets it done.
Came here for dinner for my birthday. Great food, NYC scene, very lively atmosphere.
Visited for lunch. While still very good, I would have to say not up to their usual standards. It was extremely crowded so maybe that’s why, but I found the service to be a little lacking. The food was nothing special. I ordered oysters and a grilled ham and gruyere sandwich. To be perfectly honest, the sandwich was more akin to diner food.
Still very expensive. Maybe dinner is more appealing.
Perfect dinner to celebrate 16th Birthday!!!
Balthazar is unique. Always French always a big joy..
Although the food was good, it was on the expensive side for lunch time dining. We also were not pleased with the service at all. Our waiter kept filling our water glasses every two minutes and spilling water all over us and the table because he was in such a hurry. It was quite annoying.
muy buena la comida y el lugar
I think this restaurant has had its day and been taken over by much better places to dine. It is living on its popularity but doesn’t come up to standard any more. The food was average, the service not great and it was expensive for what it was. It was recommended by lots of friends but none of them had been for some time. I wouldn’t go back, not because it was bad but because there are much better options in NYC.
Though 7 pm is early for dinner, it’s a great time to go to Balthazar before a show. We were there the other night before seeing “Slash” at Joe’s Pub, and brought my brother visiting from Boston. We had celebratory oysters and great conversation, in a quiet spot on a banquette.
Balthazar has become a family tradition over the years, the mise en scene always just right, designed to feel a little like old New York, a little like old Paris.
Warm goat cheese and caramelized onion tart is a must -
Amazing food and service. Gorgeous restaurant
Great ambience, food good enough, a bit loud
We belong to the category, which is coming to the restaurant to taste, to be surprised. Nothing surprising in menu. Good taste, fresh food. Could be because of branch. Noisy. Decoration is nice, typical brasserie. Expected a bit more. Previous visit was about 12 years ago.
delicious food, 100 points for escargot, beef tartare and french fries ... A little bit disappointed with the eggs florentine, actually they were nothing special for their price. I think everything is too expensive and the restaurant is too noisy. Despite this, You can feel the french atmosphere and i would go back again!
We had a divine dinner at Balthazar last visit to NYC and really wanted to try their Sunday brunch. It did not disappoint. We loved everything we ordered but especially, the warm goat cheese tart.
Just excellent. Classic staple in every NY trip. Only good things to report. Don't miss it!
Attentive and kind service. Delicious food. Wonderful ambience. A fabulous time was had - cannot wait to return.
paris bistro's are much smaller and more intimate. with that said, the food was good but it was a little crowded.
I love this place. How could you not?
Food was good but not amazing. Wine was good as well. Good place for casual dinner
I had a good time great time. Thanks to the patient lady who had to change my drink 3 times until I was satisfied.
Excellent food, good service, ideal for brunch, I recommend this place!!
Dinner was very good and definitely would recommend going to Balthazar. It is not inexpensive, but we knew that going in. The ambiance and energy of the building compliment the food and make for a great dining experience. The service was professional but a little distant - probably due to the amount of tourists they deal with on regular basis.
Disappointingly downhill in the last few years. Feels like it's coasting down with higher prices than the food or experience merit. Onion soup was way too salty. Fries were not crisp and popping. The muffin of the eggs benedict wasn't worth eating. Tables were jammed, being knocked by waiters regularly.
Always go to Balthazar when in nyc
Great omelet ... gluten free bread was great
Very very loud. But food and service is amazing.
Great salad !
Special occasion request was ignored even though I could see it was written on the booking at the front desk. No Belinis available and served kit royal in a tumbler. table opposite us had champagne flutes and belinis disappointing service . Was so much better last time we visits but going down hill and no attention to detail re celebrations
Amazing!! Love this place and will definitely be returning in the future!
The food was delicious and service was good. The place was quite noisy other than that everything was great
The food was delicious and the lady who served us was a delight - friendly and really knowledgable. But the noise level was unbearable. We couldn’t wait to escape it. Such a shame really.
We had a great dinner on the last evening of our week long stay in New York. The Steak Frites was delicious and the Creme Brulee was the best I have had anywhere. The restaurant was loud, but we really enjoyed our dinner.
The waiter Jamie started off fine but after he took my order he decided to ignore our table. He checked in just once to see if the food arrived and never again. He did not ask me if I needed a 2nd glass of wine. I did need one but he was not around. He also did not ask us if we needed anything else/desserts. The busboys helped out by bringing me the dessert menu and warming the bread which came out cold to our table. The food was good and the busboy was very attentive. Jamie did not do his job and had a bad attitude.
Great food, service, and NY vibe, which is great, except for the noise.
Delicious food and helpful staff and service-- Wonderful atmosphere and ambiance-- I would go back happily anytime-- Is expensive but a great experience and meal. Also, take away items from bakery were outstanding--
A classic buzzy lunch place, great for people-watching, but also maintains a high quality in its classic dishes. We had excellent salade nicoise with rare tuna and a well-balanced combination of ingredients; and a quality eggplant panini. Can be crowded and hard to get into and tables can be very close together. But it is a place that always feels good to come back to.
What a great birthday breakfast for our twin daughters! They really enjoyed themselves so much and loved the special attention and first class service. The food was amazing as always.
Food is average, but it’s expensive. The wines are super expensive for their quality. Service is average. The place is neat and has good touristy atmosphere.
Everyone must go to Balthazar at least once in their lives.
I go everytime I'm in NY!
