German
Café Berlin has been serving authentic German cuisine on Capitol Hill since 1985. It occupies the ground floor of three townhouses whose front yards serve as Biergarten for outdoor dining. The interior features a small bar and two cozy dining rooms. The restaurant is located within a short walking distance of Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. It draws politicians, congressional staffer, and tourists as well a loyal following of neighborhood residents. The traditional dishes are authentically prepared with lighter touch by chefs with extensive experience in German cuisine. In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant offer seasonally changing menus that feature fresh asparagus in the spring, salads and light fares in the summer, Bavarian dishes during Oktoberfest in the fall, and wild game in the winter. Desserts which are freshly made in-house include apple strudel, black forest cake, and luscious cream tortes. The bar offers a selection of imported German beers and wines.

Absolutely, without a doubt, fantastic. As good as German food in Germany. If it's your first time and you want the experience, order everything that looks good. Totally worth it! Also, the Cherry Blossom Fizz was on point 💯

Loved every bite. The indoor decor was not exciting, but did not detract. Would love to eat outside next time.

Great place to sit outdoors and enjoy an authentic German beer— on tap! The wiener Schnitzel is crispy and tender. Cucumber dill salad is just the freshness needed. We started with curry wurst. Awesome. Service is friendly and efficient.

Berlin Cafe is always a treat. The chef definitely has a gift with fish (cod this time around). A cloth napkin restaurant with seriously above average food.

One of my long time favorites but have not been there in a while due to the pandemic. The food was better than I remembered and of course the selection of German beers is outstanding. Combine that with a great patio and overall it was an excellent experience. I’ll be going back

It was visiting an old friend after a long absence. A colleague and I returned to Cafe Berlin after a long Covid absence and noticed lots of favorite things and some changes. The welcome was warm, we were led to our seats, ordered drinks, perused the menu and caught up with a long-time server who filled us in on changes. We had the sauerkraut balls, which were had a larger size than they had before but were as good as ever. My colleague had the half sausage platter and I had the jagerschnitzel. Both were prepared with attention to detail, were delicious, and brought back warm memories of things as they had been. We didn't have room for dessert, but this first visit in 18 months convinced us that we will visit again soon for good food and warm, friendly service.

Tim was an excellent bartender and server. Excellent suggestions, particularly the very tasty Gruner Veltliner. It paired well with the fish plate and the pork. The blueberry peach torte was delicious, and huge.

I will definitely be back.

This restaurant never disappoints. I work close by and first learned of it when they had a wild game menu. Since eating here in 2019 I have been back multiple times, and this is a key stop for me when relatives visit. Additionally, during the pandemic they had a wonderful and reasonably-priced to-go menu.

We chose to eat inside. Waitstaff were friendly and engaging.
Usually I complain about staff asking frequently “how’s everything. That certainly was not the case here. Long waits between courses, refills..,

After an awkward seating- the server placed the 4 of us on a table for 6 and had to be persuaded to seat us on an appropriate table, the service improved greatly. It was pleasant and accommodating.
The drinks were great and the pretzels were really good. The rest of our meal was only passable. The pork schnitzel and beef saurerbraten were decent, the spratzel was tasty. However, the trout was over-vinegared, the rostii was soggy and the potato salad wears soupy and unappetizing. The tasty apple strudel improved the meal but not enough.
A bit disappointed, over all, despite great ambience on a pleasantly warm summer evening.

I frequent Cafe Berlin as my go-to spot every 3 weeks. It serves a well-prepared, tasty, genuine German menu that includes delicious seasonal concoctions by the talented and creative chef, who uses local products. There are a variety of imported draught German beers and nice wines from the region. Plus the unbelievable desserts - Yumm! But more about that further below.

The staff are friendly and conversational. They are casual (in the most comfortable sense of the word), and they are observant but not intrusive. I typically sit on the terrace outside, under the large blue Paulaner canopy.

Yesterday evening I decided upon an appetizer of geraeuchtere Forelle, a Summer addition to the menu. The slices of trout were nicely browned and juicy, and they lay atop a wonderful cucumber salad and Roesti, a small potato cake. My main dish was Kabeljau (cod), co-mingled with heirloom tomatoes and roasted baby Yukon gold potatoes. The dressing was vaguely sweet and tangy. The portions at Cafe Berlin are the right size - much more than minimalist, and less than what has become the American standard of super-size. The dishes leave plenty of room for a dessert. Yes, finally! Almost. To go along with the meal, I chose a half-liter of a refreshingly light and fresh Hefe-Weizen imported from Paulaner, one of Munich’s larger breweries. I knew it wouldn’t over-power the trout or the Kabeljau. Nor did it.

Now on to the fabulous, cinnamon-scented, finely layered and crusted Apfelstrudel, fresh from the oven, and served alongside house-made ice cream. Perfectly browned small slices of pink lady apples filled the strudel. This dessert was larger than others on the menu. I enjoyed one of the four slices of strudel and brought the rest home. And guess what! I just warmed a second slice in a low oven (300 deg F) for 10 minutes, and it was as lovely as if freshly baked. Still crusty and perfect.

So hurry and go! Cafe Berlin books up a few days in advance. You’ll find me there.

We're so glad this Hill gem weathered COVID and seems to be doing well. Great beer selection with authentic German fare. The Hühnerschnitzel is my kryptonite. Service is over the top attentive, and the outdoor dining options are great.
