Quarry Bay is becoming more and more crowded with bars and eateries, but this ever more bustling area has one spot that for beer lovers and Europhiles will take a lot to knock it off its perch. Found on the first floor of Oxford House on Taikoo Place, FRITES is one of a family of Belgian restaurants around Hong Kong now famous for its buzzing vibe, friendly service, mind-boggling beer menu and superb food. With almost a hundred beers to choose from, this is a place where beer matching to meal courses is as serious a deal as wine is for French degustation dinners. The food on offer is diverse, from small plates ideal for bar snacks and sharing to hefty pork knuckles and a half-metre-long Belgian sausage. FRITES is never quiet so it’s always good to book ahead – especially for their great express business lunch during the week or their generous five-hour ‘happy hour’ – but you’ll always be glad you did.

• Belgian • Causeway Bay
A haven or second home for beer lovers, FRITES bar and restaurant has several locations around Hong Kong though its Causeway Bay iteration remains one of its most popular. Always attracting crowds to Park Haven on Haven Street during their cheekily named happy ‘hour’ (3-8pm), FRITES is styled after the glorious Belgian beer halls of the roaring 1920s and it has the mettle to match its looks. With almost a hundred different beers to choose from, it’s undoubtedly one of the city’s leading ale houses for those serious about the amber stuff. The food at FRITES, though, is no second fiddle to the beer. Featuring a huge array of European meals done delightfully but still in the generous portions you may expect from such goodies as roast pork knuckle and gigantic buckets of mussels, FRITES is hard to resist for anybody with a taste for the European way of life.

A Belgian beer house offering authentic European food, Frites Kowloon Bay in Hong Kong offers an experience like no other. To go with Hong Kong’s largest selection of bottled and draught beers you’ll find hearty dishes on the menu, like schnitzels, pork knuckle and rosemary roast chicken. Mussel pots are the house speciality. Available by the half kilogram, they come in a range of delicious sauces, from beer to mediterranean. The atmosphere is bustling and that really brings the crowds to The Quayside in Kowloon Bay. Book a table and plan an entertaining evening with great food and drinks at Frites Kowloon Bay.

• Belgian • Wan Chai
Tucked inside the Causeway Centre on the Harbour Road overpass is this little treasure for lovers of the European way of life. FRITES is by now a well-known family of bars and restaurants around Hong Kong, but each location has its own quirks and characteristics. Here in Wan Chai, this mecca for Belgian beer and delicious food feels more like a semi-classy getaway than a boisterous bar, maybe because it has the right mix of hospitality and quality to attract crowds from Wan Chai’s less.sophisticated watering holes for a touch of something a bit more sanitary. Still, at its heart FRITES is a sociable place, as full with cheer as their large handles are full of frothy Belgian ales – over 80 to choose from, actually. Popular especially during its loosely labelled ‘happy hour’ (3-8pm) on weekdays, FRITES is always buzzing but you’ll see why once you cosy up with a beer and tuck into some of their amazing food (we recommend a bucket of mussels for the full Belgian immersion).

Boy oh boy is it nice to hear good news! That was the feeling – or simply pure relief – among many a European food, culture and beer lover in Hong Kong when news broke that FRITES bar and restaurant has found a new home in Central. Occupying a large space on Wellington Street just steps from the escalator, FRITES is again ready to dish up Belgian beer, big-hearted cheer and superlative European food in the heart of the action. The new space is impressive, with interior design by Stephen Hart and unique crockery from Robert Gordon giving FRITES a stylish vibe, but as always it’s the amazing Belgian beer selection – over 80 choices, including traditional monk-in-a-monastery-made trappiste options – and gorgeous European food that makes FRITES hard to beat, from succulent sausages and schnitzels to their famous bucket of mussels with intriguing dressings. Try their express business lunch or take advantage of their five-hour happy ‘hour,’ but be sure to book because the buzz has begun!
