Maison Es is the latest passion-project from Esther Sham, the woman behind North Point’s successful Ta Pantry. Esther’s new boutique restaurant, easily overlooked down the little dead-end Electric Street, off Wan Chai’s Star Street. Maison Es is the kind of quaint French bistro that Hong Kong’s romantically-minded set will die for, all pastel-shades, chanson, and of course delectable dishes. And in terms of cuisine, while Maison Es is avowedly French-orientated, you can still find Sham’s delicate, personal touch at work here in a few subtle fusion delicacies.

Quarry Bay is becoming more and more crowded with bars and eateries, but this ever more bustling area has one spot that for beer lovers and Europhiles will take a lot to knock it off its perch. Found on the first floor of Oxford House on Taikoo Place, FRITES is one of a family of Belgian restaurants around Hong Kong now famous for its buzzing vibe, friendly service, mind-boggling beer menu and superb food. With almost a hundred beers to choose from, this is a place where beer matching to meal courses is as serious a deal as wine is for French degustation dinners. The food on offer is diverse, from small plates ideal for bar snacks and sharing to hefty pork knuckles and a half-metre-long Belgian sausage. FRITES is never quiet so it’s always good to book ahead – especially for their great express business lunch during the week or their generous five-hour ‘happy hour’ – but you’ll always be glad you did.

A haven or second home for beer lovers, FRITES bar and restaurant has several locations around Hong Kong though its Causeway Bay iteration remains one of its most popular. Always attracting crowds to Park Haven on Haven Street during their cheekily named happy ‘hour’ (3-8pm), FRITES is styled after the glorious Belgian beer halls of the roaring 1920s and it has the mettle to match its looks. With almost a hundred different beers to choose from, it’s undoubtedly one of the city’s leading ale houses for those serious about the amber stuff. The food at FRITES, though, is no second fiddle to the beer. Featuring a huge array of European meals done delightfully but still in the generous portions you may expect from such goodies as roast pork knuckle and gigantic buckets of mussels, FRITES is hard to resist for anybody with a taste for the European way of life.
