If Sai Ying Pun is Hong Kong’s new sexy district, blossoming into a foodie paradise thanks to the new MTR station and a general dawning awareness of the Western District’s hidden riches, then La Paloma (Spanish for pigeon) is certainly the area’s most sexy Spanish tapas restaurant. Covering a generous 3,500 square feet and more than capable of handling close to a hundred diners in pursuit of the city’s finest small-plates, La Paloma is a very welcome second messenger pigeon bearing deliciously good news from the El Willy Group, whose restaurants have been warmly received in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Book a spot at La Paloma’s Queen’s Road West premises (on the corner of Li Sing Street) and witness El Willy’s Andalusian magic at work. 假如西營盤是香港的新寵美食區,La Paloma(即鴿子)想必是該區最得寵的西班牙小食餐廳。坐擁3500呎的空間,位於皇后大道西的餐廳把El Willy集團的魔力發揮得淋灕盡緻。

Acting as the resident advisors when it comes to Hong Kong restaurants and bars, it’s our pleasure to kowtow to the splendour of ELIA, with a name that rolls off the tongue and a menu that gives similar joy to the tastebuds. Set on the harbourfront along Mody Road in Tsim Sha Tsui East, ELIA offers spectacular al fresco dining and a Mediterranean-themed interior fit for a king that takes its cues from Moroccan and, of course, Egyptian aesthetics. The food is similarly styled, offering diners authentic Middle Eastern, Arabic and Egyptian cuisine alongside a comprehensive selection of drinks and hookahs for your after-dinner ritual. Specialising in Middle Eastern cuisine, Falafel TLV is a Hong Kong hotspot we can’t recommend enough. Located in Central along Graham Street, you’ll find an array of dishes on offer here that are made with quality ingredients and fresh herbs and spices. For brunch, you’ll love the shakshuka with eggs, tomato, mozzarella and olives or the jachnun which is a Yemen rolled dough with eggs and tomatoes. Later, we recommend the hummus TLV; hummus with falafel or the falafel veggie burger – but it’s all delicious, really. A great choice at any time of day, book a table and discover Falafel TLV Hong Kong for yourself.

Hong Kong never fails to surprise those willing to travel out from the central north-west axis of Hong Kong island and Kowloon, and for those venturing out into the pretty eastern districts of the New Territories there’s a wealth of sightseeing and good food to be found. Up in Sai Kung, a still-active fishing harbour, the streets are crowded with restaurants plying their trade, but it’s to Big Fish Seafood & Grill that lovers of maritime delights turn. It makes sense, given the proximity of the restaurant to the water, with fresh seafood delivered daily and a big terrace for alfresco dining. You can find this neighbourhood restaurant along Wan King Path, joining Yi Chun Street to Nin Chun Street and just off Man Nin Street in the southern part of town.

Comptoir, Comptoir, we love Comptoir. At once a wine cellar and wonderful French tapas restaurant, this Hong Kong hotspot is a genuine treasure of Kennedy Town and a definite must, if casual sipping and nibbling is what you look for in a meal out. The whole affair is bistro-style and by that we mean the food on the menu, the atmosphere inside the place and the bottle-lined walls all contribute to a feeling similar to that you’d get when dining in the French capital. You’ll find Comptoir on Forbes Street where people from all over Hong Kong flock to when they’re fancying the French. Give it a go!
