Flea Street Cafe
Great food and waitress was awesome! Stated in reservation notes that we were celebrating a birthday and requested a nice table. When we arrived, they offered a table right next to the kitchen which didn’t quite have the ambiance for a celebratory birthday dinner. Also there was no mention that we were celebrating a birthday...a candle wasn’t even offered on the dessert. Quite disappointing.
30 minutes late being seated due to table occupants not departing.
My favorite restaurant in Menlo Park for sure. Excellent food and service.
We were disappointed that the menu no longer has the vegetarian tasting entrée. Also, there was only one meat entrée to choose (braised short rib). The new menu is not as good as the old menu.
We came to celebrate my wife's birthday. We had not eaten here for many years -- there are many restaurants closer to our home -- but we will not make that mistake again!
Our reserved table was immediately ready, and service was excellent. From the warm bread to the desserts, everything was delicious. As starters my wife had mushroom soup -- "the best [she] ever tasted" -- and I had chicken liver patê -- better than my mother's chopped chicken livers! Then the main courses: A wonderful tender off-the-bone braised short ribs of beef, and an impressive cioppino with halibut, shrimp, mussels, oysters, squid, and potatoes in a tomato-vegetable sauce. We also could not resist some of the dessert choices, and we each had a glass of wine.
With tax and tip the bill came to a little over $100 per person-- not cheap, but a memorable meal experience. We will be back.
consistently outstanding in all ways. A true neighborhood gem
We are never disappointed, I guess that’s why we always go back to Flea Street! It’s quiet, the service is wonderful and the food delicious. Thank you FS for another wonderful evening.
A favorite for great food and service. Really feel welcome there.
Subtle, unique, elegant cuisine — and healthy and sustainable to boot. Attentive, personable, informative staff. Tasteful and unpretentious decor. An intimate and inviting place.
Such a wonderful summation of all the things we strive to be. So glad we were able to hit all the right notes during your visit.
We've enjoyed every meal we've had at the Flea Street Cafe! This most recent one was no exception! That Pacific cod small plate was a pleasurable highlight!
The response to the cod has been overwhelmingly positive; we've decided to increase the portion and feature it as an entree. Thrilled to hear that you loved it!
Everything excellent except the cheese plate. It used to be magnificent so we were super disappointed.
Food was yummy as always. Nice ambiance, nice waitstaff.
Portions are ridiculously small- to the point where starter + bread + entree + dessert is not enough food for a typical hungry adult male. Flea Street is way overpriced for what it is. $35 corkage fee says it all- this place is nice but it’s not that nice. For the same price range ($160ish dinner for 2) there are so many better options.
Our waitress awkwardly hovered at our table every 3 minutes trying to make small talk to the point where I felt like asking her to stay away for a while. The first time she came by she walked up and awkwardly stood there table-side without saying anything for a bit. My wife and I looked at each other both thinking “what is this woman’s deal?” Later on she called me a strangely insulting name- Chef Boyardee. Maybe she considers it an endearing term due to her secret love for Spaghetti-O’s and occasionally chows down on a can after her night’s work at Flea Street. I’m not interested in returning.
Normally love coming, but found the main dish I ordered this evening to be overly salted, which took away from the flavor of the meal.
Be sure to ask how much a glass of Chardonnay is before you actually request it; I was offered 2 different Chardonnays- one was mediocre & the other was decent enough so I chose it. When the bill came it was $34/ glass!!!!! I never would have ordered it had I been shown the wine list first- it soured my evening. Flea St. just isn’t as special as it used to feel anymore, but I do love the ambience.
Hadn’t been here in years, forgot how good it is! Will definitely be back soon....
Somethings changed at Flea Street and not sure what? Portions are definitely smaller in every category. So instead of having wait staff pushing for a selection from appetizer, salad and entree, why not push for a prix fixe menu. Food overall was still good but I was pretty shocked when my gnocchi entree came out with six gnocchi for $36.
We have eaten here for over 6 years, so not a first timer.
A wonderful experience as always. I love this place for special occasions, especially—they never disappoint. The ambiance is warm, the hospitality is authentic, and the taste that is left is always refreshing.
Thank you again, Jesse and team!
It warms our heart to read this, Evan. Thank you for taking a moment to share your experience with us. We hope to see you again, soon.
Overall, an excellent restaurant where we celebrated a special occasion. The atmosphere is as if one is dining in one of several different cozy rooms within a house, and several friendly non-serving staff circled by throughout the meal to see how we were doing. The lower noise level is a delight. Our appetizers included amazingly fresh oysters. All of our main courses were very well executed. Only a couple notes to the chef: (1) the spice on the crudo completely obliterated the taste of the fish; (2) the cake desserts (chocolate and carrot) were way too dense and sugary. The only awkward moment was when a server kept coming back to our table to keep asking if we were done with our Japanese iron teapots (apparently there was a shortage and they were needed for other tables. Please buy more teapots.) We definitely plan on returning.
Overpriced and lacking in distinctive flavors. All ok but not special and not worth the cost. Also a $35 corkage fee is insane.
This is a wonderful place with delicious food AND you can hear your dinner partners' conversation!
Have been going here for years; this was the first time in a while. Maybe the best meal I've ever had there. Had broccoli soup and a fish and shellfish dish. The soup had no dairy, which I appreciated. Both that and the main dish achieved a rare harmony and complexity of flavors. They were really good. The service was very good; the only slight refinement I would suggest is that there can be just a bit more sensitivity when interrupting conversation. That's not a complaint; it's something that takes real skill for servers to enter for water refills or to check how things are with as little interruption as possible. I loved the meal and look forward to going there again soon.
For a $40 filet, I was expecting pretty high quality and it was downright gamey. I suspect my 90-year-old grandmother would have loved the atmosphere.
Excellent restaurant; service and food creative and delicious. Wine list excellent. The bill was more than expected, but I will go back again. Great restaurant.
Flea Street Cafe never disappoints. The food is delicious and the ambiance is very nice. The chef's vegetable preparation is amazing. We come often, and we will be back!
Wonderful ambience and service, as usual.
The broccoli soup was excellent. Filet and seafood platter were good. However, the crispy chicken was a bit disappointing. The batter had a nice aroma and flavor, although a bit tough and the chicken was dry, especially the breast portion. Not quite up to Flea Street standard, and price tag.
The food and service were amazing, I wish I could go there more often, but the prices are a bit steep.
i’ve been coming here for 20 years and it never fails to impress. By far, my favorite restaurant in the Bay Area.
Flea Street is always a favorite and once again, we were not disappointed. Great food, friendly ambience and a local's go-to for a wonderful meal and experience.
After a good many favorable experiences at this restaurant over the years, this dinner was a disappointment. For a house of this reputation and price tag, the menu offered an unusually limited range of choices, especially for the entrees. While the starters (oysters, smoked trout, cod) were good (if seriously overpriced), the chicken entree was very unsatisfactory - two rather dry pieces of chicken breast with an unremarkable crust, all of it drowned in an overly sweet honey dressing. Our complaint resulted in a discounted check, which was appreciated, but we would have preferred a more satisfactory meal.
Pretentious in service, cuisine quality, price...
Paper bag for biscuits, with one butter pat?
Pairings: beets and cod? And potato chips? Seriously some self absorption in kitchen here.
Absolutely fantastic! We are vegans and even though this restaurant doesn’t focus solely on vegan/vegetarian dishes, we found our food to be outstanding - very well throughout. They managed to make every bite both bold as well as delicate.
Service and food was excellent. The oysters, while very tasty, were the smallest I have ever eaten.Tiny.
The Crispy Chicken and the Halibut entrees were both excellent. Highly recommended.
Quite an expensive meal. For a party of two, we paid $280 excluding the tip. That did include three appetizers (given the size of the oysters), two glasses of champagne, a glass of wine and a Manhattan.
That said, given the quality of the Service and the Food, we will definitely return, and will recommend to friends and family.
Great, as always. Menu always has new items mixed with tried and true preparations. Service is friendly and knowledgeable. Noise level is low.
Flea Street is a hidden gem of a restaurant. Perfect for family, business or special relationship meals. The food is innovative and sublime, the service, polished, friendly and authentic, in an aesthetically pleasing, comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. For me, just perfect. I'll be back. :D
Flea Street is one of my most favorite restaurants. The atmosphere is cozy, comfortable, and elegant. A perfect date night, the lighting is complimentary and the sound level is low enough for conversation. The food is consistently wonderful, farm fresh, and innovatively prepared. The portions are small enough to allow tasting and sharing many dishes. This is my go-to restaurant for a night out with my husband.
Always outstanding food and warm service.
So lovely! Wonderful food, drinks, service, ambiance, and overall experience.
We arrived a little early and our table was already waiting for us, which is always a great surprise this days.
The service is impeccable and very friendly. The food presentation is always stunning, and the food outstanding. The only little problem was the fried chicken , unimpressive and KFC-grade, would definitely not recommend or hope to see it ever again on the menu.
Uniquely great. Quiet, wonderful food, and everyone so personable & friendly. Don’t know of another restaurant that so beautifully combines all of these elements.
