Holdfast Dining

One of the best meals I’ve ever had. Each course was on point. Service was warm, friendly and informative. Wine pairings were interesting, delicious and well matched. Amount of food was perfect, but I wanted to eat everything again! Bravo!!!

It was one of the most unique dining experience we have enjoyed in a very long time.

Our second experience here was just as great as our first. Although we first visited Holdfast at their "winery" location, their new location is just as nice and offers the intimate, thoughtful, and masterfully prepared courses we love. The wine parings offered unique, sometimes obscure, but always delicious accompaniments to the fine and delicate dishes. A wonderful experience that is pricy, but worth it. Love the prix fixe offering as it removes all decision making from the guest. Shed your inhibitions and go where the chefs want to take you and enjoy it as though it was a hike in the forrest or stroll on a secluded stretch of beach.

The food was super-interesting and tasty. The drink pairings were great. It was a really fun experience.

We were amazed at the food and the wine pairing, the presentation, and wonderful flavors. The staff were just fabulous explaining things, answering questions, and seemed to truly enjoy their work and the great atmosphere themselves. A terrific go-to place for birthdays, anniversaries or other special occasions. We'll be back!

Wanted to take daughter and son-in-layout for a unique dinner in Portland. Found Holdfast, and it turned out to be everything we expected. Unique concept and service. Three sittings of eight, 5:30, 7:00, and 8:30. Small, gourmet plates with wine pairing. Friendly and attentive service. Each course, explained. Unique flavors. This is really a spot for serious foodies. Loved the place setting drawer in front of each seat. Use all the knives and forks you need. Wines well paired with foods.

Do it. Just go. Its really good and I love the bar style seating. Watching the prep is half the fun.

One of the best meals I've ever had (#5 ever). Every dish is delicious and it's a great value (especially coming from San Francisco prices). The sort of place that fine-dining aficionados would love and people who've never experienced fine-dining would also love.

For me, best dining experience in Portland. Been here twice and was exquisite both times. Simplicity and complexity combine for an understated but superb setting.

The rating is based on the food. Perhaps it was an off menu, or I've been spoiled by all the great restaurants in Detroit, but the food was subpar. I wouldn't even say average for a tasting menu. There was 1 dish out of 9 that wowed me. For tastings, I expect to be wowed by at least 3 and have a hard time picking a favourite. There was really only one dish that stood out.
The services was phenomenal and staff were great. Wine pairings were perfect!

The nine course menu with wine pairings was excellent. Highly recommend it. I do wish the chefs were a little more engaged with those guests at the chef’s counter. I also recommend instructions be clearly given to guests on what to look for when arriving by Lyft or Uber. We almost panicked that we were at the wrong place when we arrived because we did not see anything that said Holdfast.

Best meal of great dinners in Portland. Unique, complex dishes. Wines were good; outshined by the food. Perfect meal, all dishes were featuring a variety of ingredients used in unexpected ways. Small, intimate space. This restaurant is a project of passion, and it shows. Michelin Star quality. Go here, you won’t regret it. Go to the neighboring bar.. weird but good cocktails!

Holdfast was an amazing experience. The staff is helpful and attentive. We had a 7-course meal (menu attached) with wine pairings. The portions were small but we both left full after the dinner. We were sat around the chef's cooking area and it was good to see the food being prepared. I'd highly recommend this place.

I loved everything about this restaurant, the food, the ambiance, the staff, the service, everything. They offer both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic pairing options, which is not very common in fine dining but for a non-wine drinker like myself, I think it's very thoughtful. The whole ambiance is more intimate and welcoming, just like going to a friend's place for dinner. The staff and chefs are very attentive and did a great job explaining the food and the wine/beverage that goes with each course. Another big plus about the restaurant is their hassle-free pricing structure, one fixed price that include everything, no additional cost for the pairing and gratuity included already.

One of the best meals of my life

Expensive & worth it. You have to be open to new flavors & know that the menu when you are booking will not be the same when you go.
Interesting wines are matched with the courses & enhance each other very nicely.

This place is simply incredible. The food will blow your mind, the service is impeccable. The only draw back is also potentially a strength. It's a small and intimate environment, which I presume is normally wonderful, but I found myself straining to hear people next to me due to a table of very loud people. My hearing isn't great so maybe this isn't an issue anyone else had. We will be back regardless!

The tasting menu was by far one of the best that my wife and I have ever had. The dishes were very inventive and exceptional in taste. The wine pairings were perfectly paired. Come early so you can enjoy one of their craft cocktails in there bar next door.

This was our first “experience” with Holdfast. And it truly was an eating “experience”. Wonderful time. Each course was so innovative and delicious, service was personal and exceptional and the way diners came and went over the evening was well done. No one felt hurried. We will definitely return for another eating experience!

A true level up for Portland dining.

Literally one of the best meals I have had in decades. Although it pays homage to both Noma and Relais, Holdfast is its own place. Every single dish was a delight to savor with fine and complex flavors. The wine pairings were reserved - food is the priority and the wines complimented the food without ever overpowering it. The descriptions of each course were, happily, not overly precious, but when I asked for more detail on ingredients or preparation, it was provided with pleasure.
Although every course was truly interesting and absolutely delicious, Holdfast did not appear to be attempting to shock with novelty or experimentation. While the 9 courses were appropriately modest in size, they were more than adequate in total to leave perfectly sated but not uncomfortable.
Finally, while a friend described this restaurant as expensive I thought it was actually great value for the quality and relative to other "foody" restaurants aspiring to this caliber in Brooklyn or Los Angeles. I will return!

We had an amazing dinner at Holdfast. Definitely in the top 3 meals ever and we are foodie people. Service was wonderful and the variety of dishes was perfect. My only comment is that when we went it was a special menu to celebrate their 6th anniversary and the price was $60/person more. This was not noted on OpenTable or on their website so it was a little bit of a surprise. We're sure it was because of the cavier. (which was great even to this non-cavier eater) We do feel that we got a good value even with the increased price. We would definitely like to return to this special place.

Food was excellent, staff were lovely and super helpful! My one and only small complaint was that we had an earlier dinner reservation (7pm) and as we were finishing our meal, the 8:30 reservations were getting started. It wasn't very appetizing to be enjoying dessert while a pungent fish course was being served to other guests. Other than that everything was great!

Very intimate - I think there are only 11 seats. The chef prepares everything in front of you. Great atmosphere and service. Out of the 9 courses, 8 were A+. Incredible dining experience.
