What Insiders Are Saying
Come to Kokkari Estiatorio in the Financial District to feel like a big shot. Maybe even throw on a suit and tie. It's a Greek temple of lamb.
Great overall: good food, great service. I enjoyed the oven baked dorade and the plum granita.
Amazing meal and service. Always a treat to come. Thank you for making it pleasurable for me and my guest in from DC!
This was my third meal at Kokkari and it was as great as ever. Consistently incredible food and service in a comfortable and beautiful space explains why Kokkari keeps getting top marks from serious diners and tourists alike. I love sitting in the front room where the rotisserie slowly turns and displays the night’s special over an open flame. Top notch grilled octopus never fails; meze sampler just whets the appetite; tonight’s special salad was peaches with purslane; the standard Greek salad is anything but standard. Grilled whole fish is a staple and beautifully prepared and presented. But for those who want flavor and soul, the goat stew (often a special) is more than comfort food. And the lamb chops (a regular menu item) are the best I’ve ever had. Excellent wine list. Go with friends and family and ask one of the knowledgeable wait staff to guide your meal. Share and sample as much as you can. It will only bring you back for another great meal. Looking forward to the next one. Thank you Dimitri and Gabby and Johnny.
Went to Kokkari Estiatorio and two Michelin-starred restaurants on our recent long weekend in SF. Food here is fresh, wonderful, and of high quality - and far less than what other SF restaurants charge. All 4 in our party have worked in restaurants and each said that Raphael is perhaps the best waiter we've ever had. Superb.
Wonderful in every way!
This restaurant is one of our favorites. Our new friend Johnny the Waiter was terrific. We always order the same dishes because we know they will be fine. Our favorite special secret dessert that was never on the menu before and was not always available is now part of the standard offerings. Our profile shows a preference for seating and BINGO, they seated us right there. We have been coming here since it opened, maybe 30 years ago. We also enjoy the other diners styles.
The food was absolutely amazing! Two days later, and I’m still thinking about it. Octopus and Dolmas as appetizers were delish! The lamb chops - incredible! But, the braised lamb shank. The braised lamb shank. Oh my soul, the braised lamb shank. So wonderfully tender and full of flavor!! It fell right off the bone. I will remember the braised lamb shank for many, many years to come!
Lovely as always. Desserts were especially stupendous!
A very pleasant evening out with friends. We had a booth tucked into an alcove. It felt special.
As always, a wonderful experience. We had a reservation for 1:30 but were free two hours early and they managed to find us a table. The only negative was that we were very close to another table and their conversation made it difficult to have a conversation at our table. We are pescatarian and had no problem finding many fish and vegetable options.
Loved it. Service was excellent! Food amazing!
Amazing service for a late night birthday dinner with friends.
The whole experience was delightful. We'd heard great things before coming to eat here, and they were completely justified.
The octopus appetizer was unbelievable tender - no idea what magic they put into it, but it was melt in your mouth delicious. We also had the lamb chops and the lamb souvlaki, which were spectacular.
The space is beautiful. Service was excellent. Octopus and plum and apricot salad were both very good. The goat stew special was pretty good-not quite as flavorful as I thought it would be and little bones found-should warm diners. Lamb souvli special was really bland. Meat was an unattractive grey color like it had been poached. Again, lacked flavor. Very, very pricey for so so entrees. Seems to cater mostly to large groups of businessmen.
lovely comfortable ambiance, extremely helpful staff, and exemplary foods!!!!!! go to for special occasion
Everything was top notch. If the menuu was slightly more rounded in there offerings, it would be exceptional. The decor is the best in the city. The service was great.
We were there with a gentleman that had ambulatory problems and the staff was very kind and obliging.
It was a great anniversary lunch.
Met friend for lunch and catching up. Service was quite expert but the room we were in was absolutely full.
This made it hard to visit. Would suggest if you want to converse, choose a different, less busy, time to eat here.
Sole was good; stone fruit salad was small but beautifully presented. Feta lovely, nectarines perfect,
peach slices a bit mushy. Hard to get stone fruit to cooperate all the time....
Beautiful restaurant. Check it out.
Amazing food, great service, wonderful atmosphere.
Great food, good service, convenient location - I definitely will it again.
Great service with a sense of humor. Food was excellent. I asked for a quiet table and got one. Will go back again next opportunity in San Francisco.
Possibly overall best restaurant in SF. Greek steakhouse with an extremely comfortable and classic design. The food is fresh and any item you chose is delicious cooked to perfection over an open flame
Wonderful. Like visiting Greece. Delicious food, and tasty Greek wines.
Lovely night celebrating my husband’s birthday. Very attentive and knowledgeable waiter serving our table. Atmosphere very welcoming and relaxed. Food was great!
We loved the ambience, and our server was outstanding. She steered us toward delicious choices on the menu. She had only been at Kokkari for three months and we were very impressed with her knowledge. And helpfulness. The shredded zucchini cake appetizer, the grilled fish special and the ice cream sundae were superb.
Over 18 years of going to Kokkari, they never disappoint us with a spectacular occasion.
Nice ambiance and very attentive service. However, food was below average. Greek cuisine is one of my favorites and this place is too far away from a good Greek restaurant. Octopus was mediocre, just overcooked. Asparagus with goat cheese was fine, still nothing special. My husband ordered the lamb and I ordered the goat (both dishes highly recommended by the ,waiter), the lamb was smelly, my dish was very fat and heavy. None of us finished the main dish, which happens almost never. For a desert we ordered ouzo sorbet which I find okay. My husband didn`t like it, but anason flavor is not for everyone, so it might be a matter of taste. However, the food is way below our expectations and definitely not what anyone should expect form a restaurant with such a high rating.
They are as advertised. Good food and service
Great food. Great ambience.
My wife and I went here for lunch on our 15th wedding anniversary trip and the whole fish entree was the best fish I have ever had hands down. Amazing food!
Wait person displayed bad attitude, her face showed disappointment when we opted for water over alcohol.
Such amazing service
Wow! Greek to its Retsina roots. Angelically perfected dishes. Carefully crafted service.
One of the best all around restaurants in SF. Consistently excellent
Great place, great food. I really liked the restaurant.
A special evening is in order at Kokkari.
Kokkari never disappoints. Besides the delicious fresh food, the service is impeccable. The wait staff never rush you. This is rare in San Francisco where restaurants are too focused on turning tables.
Excelling at service the experience at Kokkari is always solid. Your best bets are the fish of the day. Try not to be surprised at the price tag.
There is a variety of great appetizers. The entrees are Greek comfort food. The service staff are on top of all details. The dining rooms are very nice.
Always a solid delicious meal. The service is top notch. Great for a romantic night out or a celebration.
