The first evidence of an inn at the site dates back to 1642 but the surrounding area of Seasalter was entered in the Domesday Book as belonging to the kitchens of Canterbury Cathedral. Even then it was an area of food production, farmed by the monks, supplying produce for the influx of religious tourists after the murder of Thomas Beckett in 1170.We took over The Sportsman in November 1999 with the intention of serving good food in relaxed and informal surroundings. We have held a Michelin star since 2008.Following the monks’ example we let the area around the pub dictate what we cook. Behind us, the Thames Estuary, leading out to the North Sea, provides oysters and fish, and in front, marshland, woods and fertile soils give us meat, vegetables and game. We also grow some ingredients ourselves. A small kitchen garden and now polytunnels, mean we can cook with fruit and vegetables that benefit from being picked only moments before use.

    What a lovely ambience! We are talking about a country pub with a large garden on a hot day. You could sit there for hours and we did! All food is family friendly...pizza, burgers and so on but with genuine taste and generously supplied. Copious amount of excellent chips. New York Italian donuts to die for. Very relaxed vibe even when water shortages elsewhere along the coast caused an influx of thirsty diners. Proprietor and staff very welcoming and very social media friendly. Clear signs that bit by bit this place will go from strength to strength. Thank you!

    The food was fantastic. Really nice relaxed quirky atmosphere. We had the 3 course menu but so many extra dishes were brought out - it was utterly superb!

    My wife and I dined here Monday evening. the restaurant was quite to start with but picked up around 7pm. we had a great experience, we were greeted with a smile, had a good chat with the bar staff while we had a drink before dinner. food was absolutely amazing and the service was great as well. We will be back as often as we can get a decent babysitter:)
