In 1976 local musician and entrepreneur Harvey Platt had the idea to bring a slice of America to Norwich after working for and with the American war machine in South East Asia and a later visit to San Francisco to meeting up with former musician buddies.Harvey had the opportunity to purchase an old café caravan situated on Castle Meadow Norwich next to the old cattle market.Zaks opened in May 1976 serving the now famous chargrilled burgers in the “Original Zaks Caravan” wrapped in tin foil and cooked fresh to order in the American tradition.If it is an authentic American dining experience you are looking for then Zaks is your kind of place.     We visited for my husband's birthday lunch with our 3 children. 3 of us had feast trays, the 2 younger ones had kids burgers. Everything was absolutely delicious and there was so much food that we skipped dinner! Service was great, staff are amazing. This was our second visit, we already cant wait to return for a third!

    A birthday treat for my husband, we arrived earlier than planned but were easily accommodated in the main restaurant. The menu for afternoon tea was explained to us and our choice of teas/drinks was noted. It was a particularly hot afternoon but the room was cool and water was also provided. When the tea arrived it was displayed beautifully and each item was explained. There was a delicious savoury selection of sandwiches and bites (often not the case in other afternoon teas). The savoury and sweet scones were brought when we were ready and there was also a plate of small cakes. There was more than enough food for the two of us and all of it was delicious. We cannot recommend the experience highly enough and were pleased to be offered a box to take uneaten items home with us. Can truly say it was the most delicious afternoon tea we have had and would certainly recommend for both the food, location and ambience. Staff were very attentive, knowledgeable and friendly.
