Here, on the Central Coast of California, BBQ has always meant grilling over an open fire of red oak, a style of cooking that is native to our area and goes back to the days of the Spanish Rancheros. By combining the old and the new, we have created an exciting cuisine with outstanding steaks, ribs and chicken, along with fresh fish and seafood and vegetarian options. We also create our own (world class) wines for sale in the restaurant and to the public. Hartley Ostini Hitching Post Wines have garnered an excellent reputation. Taverns have flourished along Santa Ynez’s Sagunto Street since 1906. Sixty years ago, four busy bars entertained the locals and visitors alike. These establishments were named Last Chance, the Bum Steer, Parker’s and the Maverick Saloon. While three of the four original taverns have since disappeared into history, the legendary Maverick Saloon is still going strong and continues to be a staple in the Santa Ynez valley. In 1963, Jerry and Diane Thompson bought nine bare lots from publisher tycoon Hastings Harcourt. Plans were drawn up for a museum, restaurant, two-story hotel and the Maverick Saloon, which is named after a TV series starring James Garner. A few years later (approx. 1968) the barn was built next to the saloon. To achieve an antique look, the Thompsons used materials salvaged from demolished Victorian houses. The barn’s history began as the “Lulubelle’s Restaurant” and a tool rental facility. The barn and dancehall became a permanent part of the Maverick Salo

The dishes never disappoint! A must stop for us when we’re in the area. The pea salad, mushroom pappardelle and black truffle pizza are top favorites. All the desserts are delicious as well!

My friends took me here for a birthday dinner and since hearing they had renovated; I was super excited to see how it looked! I had never really seen what it looked like before, but I absolutely LOVED the ambiance. It was so cute inside! Its vibrant, bright, casual yet so chic! This would be perfect for a date night, a girls lunch/dinner! The outside is so cute, well maintained, I loved the outdoor bonfire pit with the large black chairs. Everything to the pool/bar area, and landscaping was just adorable. Whoever was in charge of the designing did a fabulous job. The service was great, we had a gentleman sever and although I forgot his name, he was so attentive, and he gave us recommendations. The food was excellent, the timing of the appetizers and then the entrees, along with drinks came out perfectly. My friends had brought a cake, and they were super accommodating, they gave us small plates, forks and a knife to cut the cake as well and even lit our candles! This place is truly a gem of a place that I highly recommend anyone to visit or stay at! From the highway you would never know such a place existed (but sometimes that can add such a whimsical feel). 1000000/10!

Mattei's tavern served a variety of inventive and delicious foods, ranging from their own take on French classics like sweetbreads and cassoulet to a Vietnamese inspired rock fish entree. Everything we had was excellent. The service was friendly and attentive. Our waiter made some strong recommendations for some dishes we would not have ordered otherwise, and they were terrific. The coconut rice with mango and chocolate souffle desserts were an outstanding finish.
