Butterjoint is a comfy bar and restaurant located in North Oakland. Our welcoming and eclectic atmosphere is appropriate for almost any occasion - whether it be meeting a friend for a drink, celebrating an important event, or relaxing after work. Our menu is a mixture of familiar Pittsburgh foods (think pierogies, hamburgers, French fries) and French bistro classics (beef tartare, raclette, mussels), and seasonal classics that come and go throughout the year. We put care into our vegetarian dishes too, including making our own tempeh, falafel, and veggie patties from scratch. Menu items change frequently--usually every day--and reflect many long-standing relationships we have with farms and breweries in our region. In addition to reservations, we also have a thirty seat bar that is first come, first serve. We don’t know exactly how old the bar is, but it’s at least seventy years old (probably older) and very cozy. Our friendly bartenders are here to make something you like.

Another great meal at Balvanera. From the first taste of wine to the perfect flan closing the evening ... the dedicated kitchen, sublime service and overall fun vibe makes for a wonderful experience. We can't find proper superlatives for the meal. We shared two salads the light and delicious Caesar and the equally wonderful endive with orange and bleu cheese. Skirt steak, chorizo sausage and pomme fritte were equally fine. The warm and friendly vibe create a relaxing, but vibrant evening.

Fab. Fab. FABULOUS. Having followed Kristin Butterworth from Lautrec to Georgia and back to Pittsburgh, she continues to dazzle us with her originality, unique tastes and sheer creativity with everyone of her dishes. It is no wonder that she was a James Beard semifinalist, and, recipient of other accolades from local food critics.. Her creativity parallels some of the best chefs of our time including George Perrier from Le Bec-Fin and Georges Blanc from Vonnas. One might think her grandmother's pasta dish with vodka sauce is ordinary until you taste the richness of this dish. After some very special treats at dinner, we left with an Ezzo pepperoni (German sausage pepperoni) pizza and had that the following evening. It was the best pepperoni pizza I've ever had. Congratulations and Good Luck to Kristin, a truly unique chef of our times.
