Since 1746, the building that houses this tavern has played a part in the establishment of our nation; first as a respite for stagecoach travelers expanding westward and later as a covert rendezvous point for George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette, and other leaders of the American revolution. It is believed that during the infamous winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, a major figure in the Continental Army, master military mind Friedrich Von Steuben, designated the tavern as a secret black powder munitions stash for Continental Army couriers. All the while, the tavern continued to provide food, shelter and cheer to the hungry, weary soldiers fighting for their independence. Today, we honor our historic tavern’s tradition with a mission to raise the spirits of our guests.     We were a party of 4. Our waitress, Ava was very attentive. Our party ordered the braised short ribs, black bass, the flat iron steak and the shrimp and scallops risotto. Everyone enjoyed their meal.

    Our party of 6 ordered three appetizers: loaded chips, buffalo wings, and flat bread. We enjoyed all the appetizers. Five of us ordered the braised short rib for our entree. As usual the portions were quite good and the meat was cooked perfectly. The other guest ordered his usual favorite, the chicken pot pie. Everyone except this reviewer got boxes for their leftovers. Our server was very attentive and made sure there was a nice separation between our appetizers and entrees. Black Powder Tavern remains one of our favorite restaurants in the area for comfort food.

    Finally a nice enough evening to dine outside on the terrace! Eric was our waiter and he was a delight- observant without being overbearing- I actually tried a new dish! I usually get the Beef Wellington but opted for the 1745 sandwich! Delicious- we weren’t rushed at all- it was a special night for my sister & I- and it all worked beautifully- thanks to Eric & the staff
