Dinesh, Americans are a water and soda drinking culture. You were clearly upset that we preferred Munich’s tap water rather than mineral water that has an unpleasant taste to us or sparkling water which many Americans don’t prefer. We clearly frustrated you with our too frequent requests for refills to the point of being rude to my wife. We in turn tipped you 15%+ on seven people’s dinner, drinks, dessert, etc. - something I saw you take as ultimately generous commensurate with the frequency in which you had to fill our water glasses until you got smart enough to sell us a carafe to do it ourselves. I want to make sure you understand that in our culture, you are required by law to provide water to customers because it is seen as a basic human right and the water is provided by the community to your business. A restaurant without tap water for its guests is closed. If another American were to see you not provide tap water to someone who is thirsty, most of your customers would stand up from their meal and leave your business never to come back again and for you and your business to be shamed on social media. I assure you, in America, last night you would have been very publicly fired by the business owner/management for how you spoke to my wife and the shame brought on your restaurant for not caring enough about another person as a human being to provide them another glass of water. I understand you make a living wage and the cost of your service is built into the menu prices. You should understand that, if we can afford to summer in Europe and host our German relatives for dinner, that we can afford to buy bottled water and that Americans are used to tipping 20% and since Covid more like 25%. We were prepared to have been more generous if you had been too. The tip that you were obviously pleased with would have been disappointing where we are from. I wanted to make sure you didn’t misunderstand the message…

This was the best food we had during our entire Germany trip. I wish I remembered our waiter’s name, he was so funny and really made our night. He spoke German but his English was amazing! He grew up in Chicago and was making us laugh all night. So glad we came here. Oh and the drinks were absolutely incredible too!
