What Insiders Are Saying
Odys and Penelope in Mid-Wilshire is upscale American comfort food at its finest. And also the best smelling restaurant in LA.
The cornbread donuts dessert was the biggest surprise (amazing), but all in all the food was interesting, fresh, and the staff were very helpful. We would definitely go back.
Food was wonderful. Service, however, left a bit to be desired. Had to wait way too long for a waiter to check if everything was OK and later to see if we wanted dessert.
This is an awesome restaurant! The Maple rosemary glazed Niman Ranch pork ribs are amazing!
Great dining experience as always. My family is really going to miss it.
After booking a table on this app, for 8:30pm the restaurant was unable to seat us until after 9:15. They did apologize and comp some drinks. Overall it was a pleasant experience apart from the delay.
Too bad they are closing.
Everything was wonderful and a delight.
So sad it’s closing!
Good food, great place for a date or a dinner with friends.
We were seated over 30 minutes past our reservation time and given attitude when we complained. Will not be back here for a LONG time.
Good food, our waiter could literally have cared less about us. When 18% automatic gratuity was included we realized why.
The food was stunningly good. We go out for date night every weekend and it isn't often you find all good things between 5-6 dishes. The only sub par dish we got was the pork everything was delicious and they have a spread of sauces you can get with a range of flavors that was an awesome compliment.
We have been going to O&P since it opened a few years ago. We were fans of Hatfield's on Melrose and sad to see it go, but we have enjoyed O&P since that time. The food is always creative and exceptional! From cheese puffs & crab focaccia to Snap Pea Caesar Salad & Brussels sprouts dish to Mary's chicken and the papparadelle... not to speak of the scrummy donut desert. Also excellent Manhattan and Ground Effect Cab. We didn't know about it before we went, but our charming waiter (Ethan) asked if we wanted to see the Sunday night supper menu. It was a great deal and we really appreciated the suggestion. The service was top notch: professional, prompt and friendly. We will continue to enjoy it and hope others do as well. Thanks O&P!
Deliciousness with each and every course.
You got to try.
The food was awesome!! Both the skirt steak and Branzino were to die for. One of the best
Great atmosphere and ambiance, the menu is fun and has a good variety to choose from.
The food was quite good, with some simple details adding flavor and crunch to dishes.
Service was lacking the night we visited, though some appetizers came out quick, our entrees took what seemed almost an hour to arrive. I don't mind waiting and completely understand when popular kitchen gets backed up, but our server told us "oh don't worry, they're plating your dish now" -- only to have to wait another 30 minutes. Then service charge 18% was automatically placed on our party of 3. This seemed disingenuous, thus the low rating for service.
Anything the Hatfields cook/grill/bake is amazing. Always well prepared with the freshest ingredients. On a previous visit we had a fabulous waiter who enhanced the meal. Friendly and charming and eager to explain the menu and his favorite dishes, etc. Unfortunately, this past Saturday night we really didn't like our waiter. And when you don't like the person taking care of you it does affect the meal. He was distant and intimidating. He didn't really seem interested in being there or answering our questions. We waited quite a while between finishing dinner and dessert. As a matter of fact we had to ask for dessert menus. It's as if he thought he knew us and didn't like us. He added 18% gratuity, as well. Is that normal for 2 people to dine?
BTW, I never give bad reviews. I just don't bother. But Odys and Penelope should be better than this as far as service. It's in our hood and we want to feel free to drop in and have a pleasant evening.
We love Odys and Penelope. It is a neighborhood favorite. The food is so unique and delicious! The cheese puffs are must-have starters. Too many good things to choose from--which is a good problem to have.
Beet salad amazing flavors. Well done!
This was my third -- and final -- visit to Odys + Penelope. Every time I have been there, there has been only one item on the menu that appealed to me, and every time I have tried to order that item, I have been informed that it's not available. The first two times were because the restaurant was sold out; the most recent time was because the smoker was out of order. So I ended up settling for the snap pea caesar salad, which was mostly cabbage, hardly any snap peas. I had to make myself a sandwich when I got home at 11 pm. Goodbye forever, Odys + Penelope!
Good food, not fussy. Excellent service. Portions were incredibly small compared to other similar restaurants. Was one of the most expensive bills I've had among many great Los Angeles restaurants..left somewhat hungry still afterwards.
This is our second time at Odys & Penelope, and it was as good - if not better - than the first time. Their food and service it out of this world!!
We thought every bite was delicious, creative and perfectly cooked. The cheese puffs are very rich and filling but irresistible. You have to be careful not to eat too many or you won’t have room for dessert—that’s what happened to us. We had a fabulous umami-perfect Caesar salad and luscious tri-tip. The roasted broccolini tasted complex and satisfying. Very good pasta. The waiter described each dish accurately and gave us very good advice about wines. We’re going back soon.
Food was delicious!
terrific service, excellent food, and environment suited to many
Food was wonderful and full of flavor.. Very loud restaurant, but a great energy and the design is on point. Our server was condescending, so that put a damper on the evening, especially since I was celebrating my Birthday. All in all, we had a good time and I’d recommend the restaurant.
This is a great restaurant and exciting because as a Brazilian restaurant, its delicious food is unlike any other L.A. restaurant we know of except maybe Hippo. It puts these hard to get into ones to shame....a true foodie's restaurant. Server Phillip was great. Just A+ excellent are: Cabernet Sauvignon Ground Effect, Grilled Equadorian white prawns with ginger chermoula, beet salad - best of the 100+ we have had, snap peas Caesar, Papardelle with pork belly (tiny pieces) bolognese, lemon dessert. The only bad - or even jbelow A+ - dish was the brussel sprouts fried rice sambal with a silly egg on top.
Service is an important part of a positive dining experience. The service delivered by Blair our server was decidedly subpar. He was not attentive or engaging and did not provide any suggestions or was helpful in anyway whatsoever. (Was he hung over, cranky or simply resented working that night? Will never know!) Now as far as the meal -- the appetizers were quite good and so were the salads. Period. The Branzino fillet at $32 just was not worth the cost -- not only did it lack flavor, but was served atop overcooked vegetables and overall was unimaginative. Very limited selection of wines by the glass. The space was not conducive to conversation and the acoustics were such that I found myself yelling to get myself heard by my date. Finally, I resented having an 18% gratuity charged to my bill when we were so offended by the minuscule so-called service rendered by Blair ... on the other hand, the busboys were very attentive and deserving of much praise. With so many good dining options in LA, probably won't be going back.
We have been here at least 4 times with different friends.
It was different this time. The food was good, but not wonderful as before.
The portions seemed smaller and not as exciting.
It also seemed very expensive for what we got.
There’s no parking or valet service there. The food portions are small. The waiter added a 18 gratuity for himself for a party of two. Very disappointing that he did that.
The food and service was out of this world. We even got dessert (despite how full we were)
I resent having a 18% tip automatically added to the bill. This was not fine dining! Is this the new trend in the US? Pay your servers a living wage! It makes paying awkward (especially when splitting the bill with friends).
Consistently great service and food. One of my favorites.
We had a lovely meal and enjoyed ourselves. It’s too bad the people that don’t get to sit in the banquettes have the most uncomfortable chairs ever. Cushions go a long way for dining comfort. Would like to see more vegan options.
My fav! So chic and delicious and hip! 👌🏻Servers are so accommodating and attentive and love the vibes.
Food and service great? We were a large party and the food came out with excellent timing.
The atmosphere was fun as was the service. The food is VERY overworked. A lot of oil, butter, etc. The snow pod caesar salad was literally swimming in something that was supposed to be dressing but overwhelmed the small snow peas (which you could barely see). It could have been billed as "dressing with a few teeny vegetables." The fish was well-cooked but overwhelmed in some type of oily sauce. This is quite different from the way its terrific breakfast/lunch restaurant, Sycamore Kitchen, prepares food. I don't get it.
We waited 20 mins. To put in a drink order. Overall service was slow. And an 18% gratuity is included.
Absolutely loved this place.
Recommended to me by a friend who is an LA local - this place has the same great food and ambiance of their sister restaurant a few doors down.
Music - fantastic vibes all night long.
Food - must have is the parpadelle pasta, beet salad, brussel sprout fried rice with egg.
The sharing menu for 2 is a value. Amazing food.. great price tag.
Gratuity is added already to your bill - its convenient and easy.
Everything on the menu is super delicious. Service excellent.
The food was excellent. We chose the Sunday Supper. Options were interesting and varied. A very nice value for LA. Wines by the glass selection was decent. The big downside was the noise level. Why do too many LA restaurants think they need to crank up the volume on music that’s inappropriate for a nice dining experience. I want to talk to my dinner companion, not shout and be hoarse by the time I Ieave. Music’s great, but when it’s ambient, without vocals, and in the background. With the lack of acoustics and a cavernous space, the noise was excruciating. Add to that the loud talking of American diners. When I travel to other countries i can enjoy a nice meal without being hoarse and ringing in my ears, unless there is a table or two of loud Americans nearby.
My son and I went for Sunday Dinner. SO COOL. Great atmosphere and food .
