Contemporary American
Otium is a contemporary restaurant that draws from the rich culinary heritage of Timothy Hollingsworth. It is designed to be a social restaurant with a dramatic open kitchen merging indoor and outdoor spaces. The restaurant’s name, Otium, has its roots in Latin. A word that is meant to emphasize a place where time can be spent on leisurely social activities, both eating and drinking; adjacent to one of Los Angeles" most important cultural streets—Grand Avenue—and next to its newest, most vibrant addition, the contemporary art museum, The Broad. The restaurant draws inspiration from the 100-year-old olive trees planted in Broad Plaza by utilizing rustic cooking with live fire and sustainable ingredients grown in the garden of the restaurant’s mezzanine. Otium strips away the rigid formalities of dining while focusing on the quality of food, warm service, and relaxed casual ambience.

The restaurant was bigger than I thought it was on the inside. The food was great! I highly recommend the chicken liver spread, octopus, cauliflower, and bucatini with egg. The cocktails are really good as well. Overall a great experience. We will be coming back!

Food was delicious, however, everyone had eaten and my meal had not shown up luckily we had a lot of appetizers so I just cancelled my dinner. Frustrating food we ordered 1 dinner showed with appetizers very inconsistent in the making of the food. Cocktails also amazing, but again one never showed they need a little help but would go back.

Great place for a business lunch. Would have been 5 stars but the coffee service was slow and when the food came out it they had forgotten one of the items. The server was very apologetic and communicative so overall it was a pleasant experience.

Otium was fantastic. From our amazing server to the delicious food. Only reason why I have a 4 stars for service was because we did wait a long time (almost an hour) for our main courses, but I get it they were busy, doesn’t matter though the food was delicious.
Here is what we order:
1) Naan bread with truffle butter and we also got the chicken liver mousse add on
2) Hamachi Ponzu
3) Grilled tamarind fish
4) New York steak
5) Scallops (the ones with cauliflower on top) these were the stars of the show, so good!
Definitely coming back to try that winning dish from Final Table.
Thank you, Otium!

Great ambiance and location. The service could have been a bit more consistent, but the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The food was pretty good, but our French toast was a bit overdone. The mole however was outstanding. Also, the drinks were amazing, I highly recommend the Baroo.

Great dinner after an evening nextdoor at The Broad. We were early so sat and had drinks at the bar, bartender was excellent in providing a small gin tasting, made us excellent martinis. Dinner was amazing, the mole octopus was a standout dish. Service was amazing, timing for all dishes was perfect. Entertaining to walk through the kitchen chaos to go to the bathroom! Worthy of a trip DTLA or timed with an evening at The Broad or DTLA theatres.

My 2nd time at Otium: Doesn't disappoint. Excellent food. Great by the glass wine program. Excellent service. Amazing desert. Love the ambiance in the room. I highly recommend a reservation b/c they do get busy. The kitchen knocks it out of the park with their attention to detail. We had a Puttanesca pasta, perfectly al dente with robust flavor. The Wheat Berry salad fantastic flavors and textures. The Potatoes on the App section are AMAZING! Very generous portion. Desert: Their play on RockyRoad with a house made Chocolate Hazelnut ice cream to die for. Bravo! We'll def. be back!

We were visiting from Toronto. And after watching Final Table on Netflix, we decided to try it out. I would have thought the level of service would have been top notch. Our server was very good, but it’s the little things that would have made a big difference. Example, cleaning food off the table between courses, ensuring wine glass and water is topped off. The fine details were not there. Overall we were pleased.

I came here on a recommendation from a friend. I was excited to try it. The ambiance and service were great. But the food did not deliver. I ordered 5-6 dishes and wasn't impressed with anyone of them. The cod was supposedly to be some award winning dish and was highly recommended by our server. I'm not sure why it even garnered an award. It tasted so bland.

We were immediately greeted, and seated shortly thereafter. Service was excellent, and truly a team effort. We shared a turkey BLT on ciabatta and a steak sandwich. Ota were quite good. One came with fries, which were OK, the other with house made chips, which were outstanding.
Always an enjoyable experience.

Just a nice Wednesday night dinner and a great culinary experience. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. I was alone because I was traveling for work but never felt uncomfortable. My favorite dish was the gnocchi. So good and tons of truffles shaved on top.

If you're not extremely affluent, you go there for the experience. The environment is nice, the waiter and waitresses are attentive, and the food is good. The dishes are pricey and tiny, but they are pretty and combine different tastes and textures. Overall, was a nice birthday experience.

Excellent pre-theater meal. Server was zeroed in to getting us out in time while preserving our food experience, to the extent possible. Food was delicious and beautifully prepared--the roast chicken entree, which was more than enough for two people, was spectacularly good.

Food was great,

I first ordered a tea which took 20 minutes, then ordered a cocktail which took at least 40 minutes well after the rest of my party had received and finished theirs.

Other than that it was great.

Was so looking forward to seeing Chef Tim, but I understand he has a life on Saturdays with the fambam!! I guess since the being a signature dish and the winning entree, it was one of those things where you expect more, and expectations are always a little different. That being said, had a nice meal and had a great time at Otium. The crowd and noise are very energetic (good for biz). And, somehow, when I was there in the daytime around the opening, it just looked so different from how I remembered. Tried the Black cod (that's the different expectation dish), pork chops and I believe a beef dish, had a variety of cocktails and dessert - awesome time with a some good friends!

Plate changes were sloppy, on one occasion food got cold while we were waiting for plates and utensils to be replaces. One slip up, where an order came early and not sure if it sat under heat lamp until it came back later. Octopus mole was kind of dry. Otherwise, "the works" app board was insanely good and surpassed expectations. The som was excellent and very attentive. Salmon belly nigiri had a spectacular presentation and tasted great. Order as much bucatini with egg as you can, best dish of the night.

Otium needs to have a larger dessert menu than only two items. One that we ordered was a sundae and it just looked like a scoop of chocolate ice cream in a small bowl. The other dessert was ok.

It was a date night to remember. The location, the service and especially the food/drinks were phenomenal. I definitely would return to try more dishes. Our waiter was extremely helpful, and patient when we selected our entrees. The naan with Ora King Salmon Roe was absolutely delicious, as was the Hamachi and Farro. Our main dishes were the Black Cod and Snake River Farm NY Strip (cooked medium-rare), and the flavor train kept on rolling along-- SO GOOD. We drank their Otium cocktails, as well.

Dessert was delicious fruit tart with fresh Cinnamon Ice Cream.

We would like to go back, and enjoy the rest of their menu very soon. Thank you.

Service was not in line with pricing or branding. No menu breakdown, no specials, no warm intro or menu breakdown etc...

Food was not well designed for the price, no attention paid to correct cutlery and plating.

This restaurant seems to be struggling between keeping volume up to cover the high space rent and keeping up the illusion of exclusivity to justify fine dining prices. The volume side of the business is winning out over the epicurean.

If you want to get a quick overpriced meal before/after your trip to the broad this place in convenience, but other than that it won't challenge you or teach you anything and may not even be impressive enough to get your date to soon.

When they re-do their weekend brunch menu and commit to it like a dinner service I'll give it another shot.

We arrived early and sat outside for a round of drinks. The heaters and fire place was a nice ambiance to the cold night. All the cocktails were really good. Highly recommend the “Otium, Little Sister And Salt Cure.

Once seated, our experience was heightened with the level of details from all Otium staff. Describing the food doesn’t do justice to how good it was.

Music was way too loud; wait staff wasn’t attentive for restaurant of this caliber; appetizers were delicious especially the cauliflower, naan, and albacore dishes. Black cod was super bland and the ingredients used wasn’t worth the price; Puttanesca was EXTREMELY sour, I understand we asked the waiter to make it less spicy but the kitchen should be able to balance out other flavor as well.
