Contemporary American
Otium is a contemporary restaurant that draws from the rich culinary heritage of Timothy Hollingsworth. It is designed to be a social restaurant with a dramatic open kitchen merging indoor and outdoor spaces. The restaurant’s name, Otium, has its roots in Latin. A word that is meant to emphasize a place where time can be spent on leisurely social activities, both eating and drinking; adjacent to one of Los Angeles" most important cultural streets—Grand Avenue—and next to its newest, most vibrant addition, the contemporary art museum, The Broad. The restaurant draws inspiration from the 100-year-old olive trees planted in Broad Plaza by utilizing rustic cooking with live fire and sustainable ingredients grown in the garden of the restaurant’s mezzanine. Otium strips away the rigid formalities of dining while focusing on the quality of food, warm service, and relaxed casual ambience.

Wonderful experience! I was able to bring 4 people over 80 with very particular tastes and they still loved it. The food was divine - each dish was unique and delicious. The presentation was exceptional and the service was very attentive. Definitely a highlight of our LA trip!

Don't be fooled by the 3.5 lb Tomahawk! It doesn't exist! We ordered this for 3 burly men looking to enjoy some red meat only to be served a "half" serving 40 minutes later. When we sent it back, the waiter insisted he told us that only the "half" serving was offered. There is no "half" order listed on the menu nor were we told this before ordering. In fact, we were encouraged to include more people on the order by the wait staff. Otium compromised and gave us back our "half" order at full price but provided a complimentary chicken breast and round of Buffalo Trace shots? (asked for another round of drinks and this was provided). Oh, and this is after the waiter came back to tell us he had miraculously discovered a spare 3.5 lb Tomahawk steak in the kitchen which could be ready in 4-5 business days (i.e. 45 minutes). Guess they need to put trackers on their Tomahawks, tough to spot in a crowded kitchen!

The other members of our dinner party were served either 20 minutes before the imposter Tomahawk was served or 10 minutes after (for a blackened cod?). So it was great to watch everyone eat their food while you waited. My personal favorite was watching Andrew eat mussels.

Also, would note the overall wine menu provide poor diversity. You can either get a $25-$30 bottle or pay $500 for the one George Clooney tried and sent back.

Not worth the price tag or being served off menu items by accident. Stay woke, fake Tomahawk steaks are creepin.

A wonderful family dining experience. We were initially a bit hesitant to bring our son, 8, but the staff were welcoming and our family of three had a fantastic father's day dinner.

Fantastic food and service. A little behind in schedule in seating us and no place to place to wait around since bar was packed, so we tried to stand around without being in waiters way. A bit of grueling moment.

Such a great restaurant! We went to The Broad and then to Otium. Sat outside. Service was excellent and very friendly and accommodating. Let us taste a couple of wines until we decided. Best dishes: beets, octopus, tartar, duck confit and truffle pot pie! Yum! Cant wait to go back!

Outstanding food and table service; however, the hostess arrogantly informed me that my party would be limited to 90 minutes for dinner...for a reservation made weeks ago.
Made a bad impression. I didn’t acquiesce and told them I’d leave when I’m done.

Either the portions need to increase or the prices need to decrease. Seldom have those two things been less related than they are on Otium's menu.

The first time I dined at Otium was back in 2016 for a Yelp Elite event. I was not impressed at that time and took me another 1 1/2 years to finally try it again and started to see changes in the menu and gave it a few more try and increasingly started to love the food.

Tonight’s dinner though was awesome, loved everything we ordered but the Gnocchi- wow melt in your mouth and full of flavor. The Albacore Tom Kha i a must and refreshing starter.

Definitely my go to dinner place before a show at the Ahmanson.

Overall food was excellent. I enjoyed the chicken, tartare, naan, and a couple other items. It was a little loud but a fun atmosphere. Our waiter was good but I ordered the rigatoni but never received it. There was also a birthday in our party, which I had selected on the reservation, but had no effect on the dinner. Why even ask about the occasion then?

Beautiful, vibrant space with a great, vegan-accommodating menu. However, we should have been told that if we excluded pork from the gnocchi that we would still be charged full price ($34!).

I went to Otium on 5/26, before Memorial Day. I had a reservation at 7:45 PM, but they didn't seat us for 30 minutes. I was there for my mother's birthday, and the receptionist wearing mustard color cardigan was simply rude and unprofessional. When I asked her approx. wait time, she just rolled her eyes and acted like she was doing a huge favor. It wasn't just me who felt that way, my parents said the same thing about her attitude. She ruined our mood that night, but our server was friendly enough to calm us down. Although it wasn't his fault, he apologized for the inconvenience. I would go back if this restaurant gets a new receptionist. There were two, and I am talking about the one wearing the mustard cardigan with boots.

We were given a generous gift certificate to Otium. We had never been and were excited to try. We finally nabbed a Saturday night table after months of trying. This place is hot! It's definitely a striking presesence from the street. And you can smell the grilling meat from about 20 yards. That scent hits you in the face upon entering, but in a primally good way. While a large space, it is broken up by cut-out partitions. We were seated towards the back at a 4 top so my husband and I sat together facing into the restaurant with fabulous views through the large plate glass windows. I think its one of the most interesting and exciting spots, design wise, in LA. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful going through the entire menu for us first timers. We felt off to a great start. Unfortunately, it was a bit downhill from there. They got my drink wrong, Grey Goose and Soda with lime, not so complicated except they gave me tonic and no lime. When they brought another, the ice was quite melted and there was very little fizz and no lime. Should be a bettter prepared drink for $16. Though it was strong, so I'll give them that. We had a hard time deciding on food, as everything sounded amazing. We chose raw albacore and grilled octopus to start. Both fresh, high quality ingredients well prepared but both oversauced with a cloyingly sweet dressing. For dinner, my husband had the pork chop and I chose the NY Strip. His was unsauced and very good, though a fatty cut. My steak was unctuous, again very fatty but unfortunately swimming in the bordelaise which detracted from the $60 cut of meat. If I had known I would have asked for the sauce on the side, as it was very rich and intensely flavored with tarragon, not my favorite herb. We both took home leftovers, as the food is very rich. Too full for dessert. The table next to us ordered the grilled fish and it looked amazing. Next time. We do want to try again as we love the ambiance and excitement of the space.

Totally underwhelming. We were visiting from
Chicago and had planned a special dinner out with our LA friends. We were excited to taste Chef Hollingsworth’s food, and were so disappointed. We had 7 dishes. The avocado beet salad is a Tuesday night throw-it-together dish for the competent home cook. The waiter raved about the Naan with truffle butter. It was OK. Both the albacore and kanpachi were preposterously overpriced for minimal portions of standard quality raw fish. Go to a good sushi restaurant for a much more satisfying bite. We liked the octopus. The scallops were good, but $12 a scallop? Come on! The fried whole snapper with mussels was good, but just “good”. I don’t want to come off as fixating on the price, but there was nothing at all special about the food.
Service was fine, although there were a couple of glitches: the sommelier agreed to put the wine charge on a separate check, but he didn’t. And we were given glazed ceramic bowls with big chips in them.
The wine list is extensive and expensive. The average bottle is around $250. It’s hard to find a bottle for under $100.
I don’t get it, unless it’s just riding a buzz that will soon be silent.
