About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Romantic
"Amberley Castle has a long held reputation for delivering outstanding cuisine.

Enjoyed on the first floor of the castle in either the magnificent Queen's Room, with its barrel-vaulted ceiling dating back to the 12th century and open fire or The Great Room, built-in 1165 by Bishop Luffa of Chichester, a fine example of Norman architecture with its high lancet windows, open fireplace, oak flooring, tapestry and suits of armour.

The dress code for the dining room is smart casual.

Please note that we welcome children of all ages to dine in the restaurant as long as their parents are well-behaved!

We made a last-minute decision & booked at 7pm for an 8pm booking for 2 - email & SMS confirmations received. We arrived to discover we weren't on their bookings print-out because they print it at 6.30pm & don't check if other bookings have been made! Our arrival clearly threw the chap in reception, to the point I thought they my not accommodate us! A poor start. We didn't feel welcome. But we were shown to the restaurant, a beautifully appointed room. There were a few tables occupied & some pleasant jazz playing in the background. We were seated & received the menus when the nicest table in the room became vacant so we asked to move. A bit of reluctance but they acceded to our request ("if you really want to sit there...) Once seated, I asked for the wine and cocktail menus. I had to ask about 5 times & a long time before they arrived. Really vexing (and why?). The service throughout was rather clinical & lacking a personal touch. The staff should at least smile! Because the drinks lists took so long to arrive, the food (lovely warm sourdough bread made on the premises) started to arrive before any drinks, even water. I would have liked a drink while perusing the menu. A simple 'can I get you some drinks?' would have been a nice start. So things were de-synchronised at the start, but the dishes in the 5-course tasting menu were awesome. Amazing presentation, great contrast of flavours. Two comments: the main course options were pork, lamb or venison. No fish or vegetarian options! Each course was very elegant & dainty - except for the pork chop one of us ordered, which was huge and not in keeping with the 'vibe' of the menu. £98 per head for the food was pricey but not outrageous. Unlike the wine list, which was (£105 for a bottle of Nyetimber!) All told, food & setting were fabulous but service was clinical & the whole experience a little soul-less.

We had an amazing afternoon tea at Amberley castle which is the most beautiful venue. The food was excellent, we were not rushed at all and the service was fabulous. It was a beautiful day so we were able to move outside but the rooms inside were also gorgeous. What a relaxing place to spend a Friday afternoon.

Don't book it if you have dogs (none allowed, unlike Goodwood) or you have a long motorhome (there are low hanging trees and a narrow entrance with a sharp turn in). A service charge was added automatically. I prefer to add my own. The food was excellent, but I had to eat it with my eye on my watch because I had to leave my dogs in the vehicle, which rather spoiled the otherwise excellent experience.

Back for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. Lovely room, lovely table. Enjoyed the 5 Course Meal immensely. Such a shame that the wait staff were just unsmiling and cold. Breakfast service was warmer and inviting.

location and food was great. Unfortunately the service, although Ok had no personality to it - every member of staff lacked a smile and friendly approach.

A fabulous outing. Staff were so friendly and welcoming without being in your face all the time. Food was so tasty and lots of it. Would have been nice to have smaller cakes and a few more. It was very savoury heavy. The rye bread with the salmon was very glaggy and nor great. Rest was fabulous, the scones and and the Rubarb tart were the highlights. It is pricey but equally beautiful setting great staff really good food you do get what you pay for. Would definitely recommend.

Enjoyed an afternoon tea here as a gift for my relative for a special birthday in exceptional surroundings. Food was outstanding and I’d definitely go back. They left a lovely note on our arrival acknowledging the birthday and gave a lovely little birthday cake too.
