Banyan Bar + Refuge
Part gastropub and part modern Asian fusion cuisine, Banyan Bar + Refuge is an inventive eatery with a warm and rustic ambience. Dim Sum dishes include the Avocado Bao Buns served with red curry aioli, chilled cucumbers with fortified black vinegar + and korean peanuts; both great as a dim sum selections. Asian inspiration continues with Banyan's noodle and rice dishes, such as the dragon noodles, kimchi fried rice with a sunny egg, and seasonal hakata ramen. Popular dishes include the very tasty banyan burger, whole fried fish, and shaking beef.
The food & drinks were soo good, and I LOVE the atmosphere here!
Great food and some wonderful vegan options!!
Outstanding, inventive, amazing flavors. Service was top notch.
Amazing food and beautiful place.
Banyan’s 1$ dumplings are perfect. Truely a dumpling that’s form and tastes on par with the best china has to offer. The dim som is of the best quality you will find in the city. Enjoy all of this under the whimsical ambience and kitchy pink flamingos.
Great food, waitress was really nice in that she made sure we knew about the happy hour special a few minutes before it closed. Would love to go back there and try more of their food. Only feedback is that it could have been a little quieter.
My favorite restaurant in Boston. Food is always consistently tasty and the service is amazing. Out of all the places in the city- they do the best job.
A unique menu and cool aesthetic make Banyan appealing, but in reality the food underwhelms and the tables are so close together I was basically on the date with the couple next to me.
Didn't really see the value of this spot. It was a beautiful space, lively, and well staffed. It just fell short on the food. We tried a fairly wide selection of the menu and nothing really clicked (except the wings =]). Lastly for two people who don't drink, seeing a $100 bill is quite unusual - especially if we're walking away with a "meh" review. Seems like this spot is better for drinks and ambiance. I would not recommend to anyone looking to experience the Boston food scene but more for folks to meet up after work or shopping to relax and enjoy the cozy and trendy atmosphere.
Food was delicious, service left something to be desired. Had to ask multiple times for an easy something and waited for 20+ minutes for it.
My favorite restaurant in boston. I go there about twice a week. The food is flavorful and light. The staff is amazing! Highly recommended to anyone and everyone!
Drinks awesome. Bao bund really really good! Beef dish yummy! The spicy lowmien noodles were very aldente, not what we expected but flavor was great
Yummy food! Great, friendly service!!
Overall, pretty good. i find the food a tad too salty.
Great place for drinks, food, catching up. It has a great ambiance, a nice lounge area and bar.
The food here was amazing! The service was quick and friendly. This was my second visit and I would highly recommend it!
Lovely experience. Great place
Excellent food and atmosphere. Service was top notch! We had the pork belly bao buns, dumplings and the kimchi fried rice. All were delicious and would recommend!! Plenty of food for two people.
One of my fav new restaurants in Boston
Banyan Bar is a really cool place to have unique food before the theatre. They have gluten free options. The decor is especially charming as they have flamingo chandeliers above the bar.
Inventive cocktails and food - oyster bao outstanding as is their unique take on the Scotch egg and poutine. Lovely service. Awesome Christmas decorations!
Delish! Would totally suggest this to anyone.
Nice place, food was good, but not fantastic. Drinks small and overpriced. Ambiance great. Service fantastic.
Our server was perfect- not rushing us but always around when we needed a refill :) the food was very tasty. I loved the cozy vibe with good music that wasn’t too loud for conversation
Excellent service and the food was divine! Also, killer throwback playlists on Saturday nights!
By far one of our favourite spots in Boston. The food came quick, was delicious and complex, and the service was fabulous. We’ll be back!
From the unique libations to the flawless cuisine and service...a great experience. I highly recommend Banyan, and will be back soon!
Had brunch over Thanksgiving weekend and our group of five all loved it. Food was unusual and delicious. Very friendly, attentive and fast service.
I have been to Banyan Bar + Refuge several times over the past years starting with the month it opened. The food initially was excellent and creative, but what I most recently experienced will not have me returning. Small bites and entrees that used sub-par ingredients and very overpriced for the dishes. The scallop entree for $30 had 6 1/2(?!) quarter-sized scallops in a small puddle of celeriac puree, looking more like one of the small plates. Also, given the perspective of the span of time over which I've visited, I believe that the creativity of the menu has declined as well--three different bao appetizers? More effort could be put into a menu when asking $12-$17 for a small plate.
We have been to Banyan Bar many times and love coming here, especially times when it is a bit quieter, such as an early dinner before theater, as it can get quite noisy and impossible to have a conversation. The food is quite good, innovative and often a bit on the spicy side, which I usually enjoy. On our recent visit some of the items were extremely spicy, such that one of our party who has a more mild palate, was unable to enjoy them. Menu is pricy for the relatively small portions that you get and on this recent visit, our waiter was quite pretentious. ( I have generally found wait staff and hosts to be very friendly and helpful.) One final comment: the food comes out very quickly, so if you want to spend more than 45 minutes at this restaurant, you may want to pace your order. On this recent visit we received half of our food order well before our cocktails arrived at the table. A bit backwards I think, but could be easily rectified if you instruct your server or pace your order accordingly. Of all the items we ordered, the Ramen was spectacular, though quite rich.
Wow, Boston can do amazing food. We were so impressed with Banyan. After having a disappointing experience with Southeast Asian food in Los Angeles, we found deliciousness in our own city. This is a must place for those who like delights of fine dining. The fried fish really stole our hearts!!
From the drinks to the food, it was such a great night! Four of us ordered and shared all of the plates and enjoyed every single bite. Every dish we had was a burst of flavor and the Scotch eggs were over the top!!
A little pricey but so much fun! Bao buns were amazing.
I went to Banyan & Refuge for brunch. One of my guests is vegan and she found the server very accommodating to adopt the menu to her taste. I had the avocado toast which had scrambled eggs and tofu. It was a satisfying savory dish. We ordered a side of pork dumplings as an appetizer. We also had a side of sliced cucumber in a black vinegary sauce that was delicious. There is a vast bar menu that most likely adds to a vibrant night scene.
Food was an interesting mix, some were very tasty, some were average, and some were too salty. yhr cocktail menu was great, we all had different drinks and they weren't too strong, just right. Service was amazing, we had some of the best wait staff. I would bring friends who have not been there, but I would look for a different place if everyone had already been there once. Karaoke night was way too loud, and that is what made us leave, otherwise we would have stayed and had more drinks.
Banyan Bar and Refuge offers consistently good food, excellent service and a delightful atmosphere. It is definitely one of the South End's restaurant gems. Check it out!
I used to really love it here. I still like it but the food is not as good as it used to be.
Food was average and staff was clearly not interested in providing even average service. After being seated for 10 minutes had to ask the passing host for a server. She kindly took our request for coffee before finding our server. We then spent the remaining time flagging our server down for coffee refills and eventually our check - nothing was quick considering there was 6 tables and 5 visible employees working the floor.
