What Insiders Are Saying
You might think Mexican food is best served sloppy and cheap. Downtown's Broken Spanish will prove you wrong.
Great food and lovely staff
very good food and ambiance but waitress was sub optimal
The food here is absolutely phenomenal. The only issue is how far the dollar gets you. We spent about $300 for 4 people and no one was full. However, every bite of all five items we ordered was perfect.
Great first time with a great server... Wait time was a little long but the food was worth the wait. My girlfriend had the special of the day, the short rib tostada (she actually had two) and it was amazing!!! I had the oxtail quesadilla and it was small, filling and very delicious... Hats off to the chef!!!
Everything was really good, but way too expensive for what the food is. A small bowl of broccoli for $20 doesn't make sense. Our bill was $230.00 for two people before tip. We eat out a lot and that's expensive. We had two cocktails each, shared one tamale, one salad and pork belly. I think for most people the price might be too much.
Small plates of non traditional recipes served family style. A wonderful food adventure.
Really good food! The lamb was amazing!!
New Mexican cuisine. To discover!
We had such an amazing meal at Broken Spanish, we are already planning our next visit. The tostada was delicious and put together like a piece of art. The chicken with green mole was juicy, tender and the sauce was divine. The dumplings were a big hit for our son and the margaritas were perfection. Ambience and setting are warm and beautiful. We loved everything about our experience. The food is not cheap but the quality is extraordinary and it was worth every penny.
It’s loud. Portions are small. Server wasn’t that helpful. It ain’t cheap.
Our experience started out great, but ended poorly. The octopus was over cooked and the sauce was too vinegary. Except for that, the rest of the food and drinks were good. Somehow, our main order and beet salad seemed to have gotten dropped and there was a sizable gap before our chicharrónes came and we finally asked the waitress to 86 the beet salad. We went from having lots of time to having to race to our movie afterwards.
After an unfortunate situation where they gave our table to another party by mistake we had a wonderful evening.
Awesome. Food was phenomenal. New favorite date place
Stop in LA, in transit to Beijing just for try the chicharrón. Definitely worthy. Great service, good selection of spirits and beer. We will stop next Saturday again, going back to Rochester NY. The whole menu is well constructed, excellent for sharing with your friends.
For the food yes, everything else not so much. We had reservations at 6:30 & were out by 7:15. Our appetizers came before our drinks. The food was great but it felt like they were rushing us out from the moment we walked in. We had the queso fundido, the retried lentils and the barabacoa & it was all great & tasty! Our favorite was the barbacoa. Downside is that they charge you $7 dollars for 5 tortillas & there were 4 of us so we ended up paying $14 for additional tortillas 😑. Not very happy about that. Personally it felt like it was too pricey for the amount of food you get.
Food was tasty. Service was super friendly and attentive all around. Place is pricey. $18 a shot for a $35 bottle of casa noble tequila is pretty steep. Short rib was $40??? You won’t see that anywhere else.
Loved the lamb tamale!
Ok experience. Wait staff could have been better that night
The cocktails were great and the food was tasty. I would certainly visit again.
Quality did not come with the cost. Slaw was so salty it was totally inedible, and left the table untouched. Birria was $39 for a small portion of meat with beans...definitely not worth the cost. Drinks were the highlight of the night.
The prices are extremely high for some of the dishes oh, such as the tamales. The chicken dish I can't remember the name of it with the red sauce was mediocre. The potatoes we're outstanding. Overall the service was fantastic staff friendly and that would draw me back, but the prices are entirely too high. I found myself not getting a drink because that pretty much would have priced me out.
The experience was great overall but the food option was limited. There were no sides to accompany the main dishes.
Food is excellent and the service is, too.
Fantastic service as soon as we entered the FORR, this continued for the whole evening
Excellent food, great ambiance. Our waitress wasn't great but the rest of the staff were so welcoming and attentive
Food was as good as it ever, maybe better. Chile Relleno fantastic so was tostada chicken and lamb neck tamale. Perfect pre-game dinner
Our server, Kevin, was amazing
The food is amazing and service is always on point. Their drinks are always fun to try. We always go back to our fave the Cazuela it’s great for sharing.
Great for date night or drinks with friends
Meal start to finish was delicious! Honestly you will be happy with anything on the menu but don’t slack on the whipped carnitas fat and refried lentils. Slap a good tbsp of that fat on a tortilla and a big spoon of beans... thank me later. Service was smooth, our server was very knowledgeable and the front of house team was on point. Shoutout to chef Ray and the whole team for a wonderful meal!
Amazing menu and fantastic service!! Our “go to” spot for a lovely meal and cocktails before any event at Staples Center.
The food was very delicious and unique. Would definitely come again. Service was pretty good overall, very noisy in the back room where they sat us.
From the atmosphere to the service was great. All our courses of food were excellent. Whenever in the LA area I would highly recommend.
We just had a delicious meal. The combination of ingredients are inventive and unique.
Our order included the octopus, tostada with fried egg addition and spinach tamale.
All small plates that are easy to share.
The whole snapper looked fabulous - maybe next time!
We got their version of flan and floating island for dessert. Highly recommended!!!!!
It is by far the BEST Mexican food I have ever eaten (and I grew up in Mexico and traveled Mexico). The service was absolutely outstanding. Everyone there works as a team. We were impressed and can't wait to go back.
I definitely recommend the Papas!
Wow, such great service and food! We ended up talking to one of the kitchen staff members that recommended some other places to try during our visit too. We will definitely be returning to Broken Spanish whenever we come back to L.A.
The food was inventive and flavorful and every dish was something new. I had a great time. The service was perfect, the staff was friendly and had great recommendations, and if I lived in LA I would definitely be back soon!
Excellent restaurant with original dishes (quite something with Mexican!).
It was a terrific evening with great food and friends!
