Chifley's Bar & Grill
Nice traditional restaurant with attentive staff and an adequate menu. While on the high end for price for menu options and reasonable for drinks, the quality off sets this.
The food here is so poor! So many good places in the vicinity for breakfast and lunch. Really, they need to lift their game.
Food was great and wait staff were very friendly, exceeded our expectations
My steak was great - I asked for Medium, and it was spot-on. My only disappointment is that if we order sides, it’d be great to see them turn up, instead of me waiting, and then having to ask if they were on their way. By that time, it was too late so we canceled them. Disappointing
Delightful surroundings and excellent service with food that was equally delightful. Highly recommend!
I visited on Saturday night. I saw the menu said that they cater for people with dietary requirements, so I asked a question about one menu item. The waiter went to ask the chef about that one menu item. After that item was unsuitable, I asked about a second item the waiter left again to ask the chef. Again the item was unsuitable.
Now I’m at a table filled with embarrassment because I have two items that I can’t eat and I’m none the wiser as to what I could choose.
Might I suggest asking your customer what their needs are and asking the chef one time for all suitable options..
Outstanding service. Made my better half and I feel very special on our anniversary.
Food was very good cannot fault our meals we had breakfast 2 mornings and 1 dinner excellent
Very pleasant evening
Food delicious - steak excellent
Jogan Rosh needed more sauce
Lovely decor and attentive staff
A disappointing experience. This is a culturally significant building, but its art deco heritage has been compromised in the Chifley Room by out of place lights and wall decoration. Added to this, the food was average, with the quality of the steak, in particular, not commensurate with the price charged. Sadly, it was burnt on the edges.
Lamb chops, salmon and risotto were all overdone - lamb chops were burnt, salmon was dry and risotto rice was mushy. Noise level was "energetic" as there was a group of four men who had very loud laughs, otherwise OK, Service was very good.
The atmosphere is iconic Canberra: gracious in style and resonating with its history, it would appeal to the discerning guest. Service was friendly, courteous and generous. The menu, while not extensive, was excellent.
An enjoyable dining experience in a comfortable & stylish space. Food is well presented & delicious, with attentive, obliging service staff. Would like to see more vegetarian & seafood options.
Unfortunately the food came out already cool. We requested that it be heated, and it was taken away, then returned to the table, with an apology.
But, it had only been heated marginally. So disappointed.
The serving staff were very understanding, and they did their best.
The restaurant was terribly understaffed, and those working just seemed overwhelmed by the situation. Nothing against them, but there needed to be more of them. It’s a shame—the food was good, and we would have ordered more, but the place was too frenetic, and didn’t want to be a further imposition on their time.
we have been here many times, a great hotel.
sadly menu is a bit cafe style and wine prices are best described as extortion.
Lovely setting although surprised we had to line up and order from the bar. Would have liked to have seen more hot options on the limited lunch menu, that said I enjoyed the burger I ordered which came with a glass of wine, good value.
This restaurant was excellent. The staff were attentive. The food was delicious. The only downside was that the tea was tea bags, not leaf tea. I will be back again.
Excellent value for money.
It was a birthday celebration so a bit special. We were offered a ‘Complimentary glass of sparkling wine’ which we gladly accepted, but it never came. We asked that our drinks come with the meal but they were delivered, to our table, a good 20 minutes before the food. I had to send my dinner back as the mash it came with was watery, lumpy and cold. It was returned with a slightly warmer mash. We ordered a side of fries and one of roast Kipfler. We got 2 orders of Kipfler potatoes instead. The wait staff were pleasant however. Will probably never go back.
The food was delicious and the service staff was polite and efficient. The food arrived hot and fresh. A great experience.
Wonderful service and ambience. Let down by food quality. Just not up to a standard equaling the price. On some dishes way too much salt. On the risotto with chicken - large hunks not pieces of chicken included.
Very comfortable environment. Perhaps a little wider range of choices on menue, or more changes as we do eat there often.
Great service but tempura barramundi was not good. Fish was old and hard as was the batter.
My husband’s pork cutlet was delicious and the charming waiter was delightful but such a shame about the fish.
Breakfast the next morning-pancakes great but the big breakfast was served warm not hot.
Excellent food and service. Great historic feel in a classy setting
Food was fantastic. Service we great, but young man serving us appeared inexperienced. I'm sure he will learn improve.
The staff were so nice and warming. And they made my partner’s birthday a memorable day.
And the food was worth the prize.
Fantastic ambiance in historic Art Deco hotel. Staff were very attentive. Food was mostly very good. My salmon was excellent while family members who had the steak reported that they were ok but not outstanding. Desserts were thoughtfully presented and delicious.
This is a hidden gem in Canberra. Great food, service and ambience. We enjoy having pre dinner drinks before our meal outside.
We will be back
Excellent wine pairing advice. I dont see enough of this elsewhere.
All staff friendly, efficient and professional. Good food and nice atmosphere. Guitarist and singer on the night was a nice touch.
Food and drink were alright, but more like pub food. The staff were polite and kind, but made several mistakes with our order and check. Beautiful building and surrounding was the main positive point.
Nice restaurant, good location, good menu, tasty food, friendly staff!
Didn’t need the music at the level it was set, the quality of the sound also not good. Only downside of the night
I enjoyed the restaurants decor, but.
The menu was very limited. For a bar and grill, they only offer one steak.
The squid entree was very undercooked and Not enjoyable. I was offered a replacement but I declined.
I ordered my steak medium rare, but it came very rare.
My fiancée ordered the same but medium and it was cooked the same as mine. Very rare.
Both of our breads were still slightly frozen in the middle.
I liked my bearnaise sauce, and the roast chats.
We decided to skip dessert.
Good food and service.
Wonderful, professional service and large range of wines. Live music and comfortable seating
The price reflects the setting, a nice historic hotel in the heart of Canberra.
The staff are friendly and attentive. The food is fantastic, while the portions are a good average size it looks and tastes good.
The vegetables looked as if they were rehydrated. Some of the vegetables could not be eaten. The sauce lacked flavour. Very disappointing.
The waiter was excellent. He was polite, courteous and efficient.
The food was above expectation. Steaks were perfectly chargrilled and cooked exactly to order. The kids bolognese was decent and was made with a child's palette in mind, unlike other places that think kids don't care about flavour. Recommend Chifley's for families or for a cosy date. During summer the courtyard is great!
Restaurant was freezing as there was live music in court yard and all doors to outside were open for their convenience. No consideration was given to dining guests (Most wearing their coats still) even after requesting that the door to outside be closed or the one leading to the reception to stop the major cross draft. Not a pleasant experience unfortunately.
