What Insiders Are Saying
We can always rely on Cotogna in the Financial District for an excellent upscale Italian meal.
I had the agnolotti del pin. It was like little miniature raviolis stuffed with lamb. The pasta was so delicate that it melted in my mouth and the flavor was exquisite.
The service was attentive. The restaurant is small with a lot of tables squeezed in, so you are sitting very close to your neighbors on both sides of you.
My adult daughter and I spent 2 nights in SF and ate at several really good restaurants but our lunch at Cotogna was the best. We split a delicious simply composed salad with pea pods, we each got the raviolo for our entree which just melted in our mouths and my daughter got the rich blood orange cake of which she loved every bite. We definitely want to go back sometime for dinner there. Reservations are a must.
Love this restaurant. Great ambience. My only issue with it is this: if you have an appetizer plus one entree, not appetizer + primi + secundi, then I feel portions are a bit on the light side. I don’t need American gigantic portions but these can be quite small (pizza course is adequate size). However, no matter what, every mouthful is delicious.
I was pleasantly surprised with the waiters pointing out that it was our anniversary and the personalized place mat. The food did take a while to come out and the place is pretty crowded with our table being two inches from our neighbors who were a bit loud. Being gluten free and a pescatarian there was only one option for me, which was a little disappointing. I ordered the black cod which was well cooked however my palate is used to more flavor so it was bland for me. My partner ordered the rabbit ravioli which he liked, but also felt was a bit bland. The waiter was busy with a large party so by the time we could ask for some pepper we had finished more than half our meals. The gelato was delicious and came out with candles. Overall our experience was ok but I don't think I'd come back considering the limited options for me.
Overall a tasty meal. The food is worth the hassle of getting that elusive reservation. The wine list is far from entry level friendly. Italian and French bottles dominate the list and command a 300% markup over retail. So go for the food, but don’t get robbed on the wine.
Always outstanding! We come here for our birthdays, anniversary or to treat out-of-town guests to a very special restaurant. Thank you, Contogna!
Amazing from start to finish. One of my favorite spots in the city.
Excellent italian, fresh ingredient and great preparation. Highly recommended
Went on Thursday night at 6 hoping it would be quiet enough to converse. Could hardly hear the server despite the small table that had my companion and I close together. We were behind the hostess who was stamping paper - logo for future menus (?). We had to ask her to stop.
Had beets/burrata, veggie primi, the $105 steak. Everything was adequately prepared, nothing outstanding in my book. However I did like the polenta upside down cake very much. Not too sweet and the right size in my opinion.
Always a good spot for lunch albeit at "tourist" prices. Interesting "Italianate" preparations. In recent years, noticeable reduction in flavor intensity.
Wonderful experience!! Terrific food and service! Highly recommend Cotogna.
We have dined at Corona since the opening and always great service and deliciously prepared food. This time was different - the salad was fresh but over-dressed. The agnolotti is one of our staples but instead of a rich brothiness the ‘sauce’ was thick and syrupy - like something already prepared and jarred. We were unable this time to adjust to the noise level and gave up trying to have a conversation. The service remains exceptional and the carrot sformata was devine!
We love this place! Sat at the bar with John as our server. He is fabulous, the food is fabulous...raviolo, pasta with truffles, little gem salad, bombolinis for dessert. Happy us!
I have been to Cotogna maybe ten times. Every time has been a delight. The food is innovative without being precious, the space is very attractive, and the wait staff is perfectly trained. It's a bit noisier than I would like - not as noisy as the noisiest San Francisco restaurants but at times conversation is a bit difficult. And of course getting reservations isn't easy. But the overall experience is so good that I will keep going back. Italian-themed food that somehow is both refined and casual.
The fire grilled savoy cabbage wedge and the sunchoke tortelli are amazing
Came in recently early on a Saturday for a special occasion. While the service was great and my dessert exquisite, thought the pasta entree I ordered lacked. Was supposed to have lamb and rabes, but I found no evidence of either, as the pasta received the barest of saucing.
Simply one of the best restaurants in the city. Traditional Italian dishes with creative twists elevated to fine cuisine in a modern-rustic ambiance. The quality of the pasta is second to none, and the sformato is mind blowing.
Originally we were seated in a corner & our server was very strange indeed, didn’t seem to want to be serving. Eventually we were able to more to the bar (our preference) and had a fantastic server and got to watch the pizzas being made. Food is excellent though expensive.
A great spot..the food at Cotogna is excellent....not a bad item on the menu. Very authentic...very popular...always busy, all good signs. A can't miss place in SF.
The food is ok, but definitely not worth 100 usd for 2 people - I had the restaurant signature dish and it was soaked in butter
One of my favorite Italian restaurants in the city! Such complex flavors and beautiful presentation. The salad with a subtle buttermilk dressing is a perfect example- lovely flavors enhanced by a hint of mint and some crunchy snap peas and sunflower seeds. Professional waiters who are pleasant and helpful.
Phenomenal on every level. Highly recommend the vanilla Gelato with chocolate sauce.
Interesting ecclectic menu. The Hamachi appetizer was incredible. I also had beet salad (very good) and a baked cabbage wedge (not up to par with the rest of the meal). We went early enough that the crowd noise wasn't bad.
Overall, I look forward to returning.
Pasta and service was superb . Portions were on the smaller size. The gelato with topping options brought to your table was a nice way to end dinner.
Authentic, delicious Italian food with very knowledgeable service. Great pastas, delicious maitake mushroom pizza, wood-oven quail was fantastic.
Disappointed ! Booked in the UK prior to holiday as came highly recommended!
Little ambience, completely pretentious and service appalling! Waiter could hardly be bothered to pass the time of day with us!
Ordered 2 pizza’s...one tasteless, other so bitter didn’t want to eat it!
Expensive....won’t be returning or indeed recommending!!
Everything was spectacular, everything. Something I will not forget and I will be back.
This is a great restaurant. I always come here for the raviolo which is delicioso!
The appetizer selection was not the best for us but the pastas were really wonderful.
Lovely food in a lively atmosphere. Waiters were really friendly and gave great recommendations for dishes. We were not disappointed by the food, it was great!
One of the best dining experiences I’ve had. Wonderful service, innovative food, great atmosphere. Would put it on a “must eat” list of San Fran for tourists and locals alike
Although I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, we had terrible service and another person at the restaurant was taking pictures and videos of us while we ate our meal. Despite complaining to the manager, he didn't do anything and it was very uncomfortable for our group (especially after waiting a full hour to be seated). I will be reaching out to them regarding this issue.
Fantastic service and food. I believe it’s the best pasta in the Bay Area.
The food was very good, but when I spend $350 on dinner, I hope to have a service experience that is a level above what I would get at an average restaurant. We were only able to get an early dinner reservation, which is fine, but it felt like they just wanted to turn the table for the later reservations. We also had to remind them that we ordered a bottle of wine and it came when we were halfway done with our final course. I wanted it to be a special occasion...we dressed for a special occasion and spent money like it was a special occasion, but it didn't feel like one. The food was really great though. I'd recommend it for lunch or a casual, yet very pricey dinner.
I am a Cotogna addict. It is divine in every way. I like that I can enjoy it on a weekly basis and always come away delighted.
Delicious food and good menu choices. We went for our 10 year anniversary, they made us personal place settings as a congratulations which made a lovely touch. Would recommend booking
The food was original and delicious; we came at the recommendation of a colleague from work. But we also brought a 7 month old baby, and it is not a family place, fair enough. At least they had a high chair, but there is no change table in the restroom. The food is excellent but expensive. I wished they had told us that two starters and four entrees were not enough for four people. Portions are small.
