What Insiders Are Saying
We can always rely on Cotogna in the Financial District for an excellent upscale Italian meal.
Overall Cotogna is an excellent restaurant, in particular the food. From the array of antipasti to the pastas and the main courses it's a real treat to eat at Cotogna. Of course the pizzas from the forno are outstanding along with Estevan's foccacia. The service is fine and the atmosphere is vibrant. In short, people love Cotogna that's why it's difficult to get an evening reservation, particularly on Friday or Saturday. But they're open for lunch as well, so somehow you need to get there and enjoy the great selections of Italian dishes. You won't be disappointed.
We just loved our dinner !
Service was very slow but food was delicious.
consistent perfection with my favorite egg raviolo
Loved it food is always great and fresh. Personal Servicer is excellent
We were celebrating Fathers Day a day early. I put that info in my reservation and the staff really rolled out the red carpet. My mom was able to join last minute and they were extremely accommodating, even with a packed house. Our server made some recommendations and we all shared several plates. Food was great! Service was excellent. They even switched out the place settings to say Happy Fathers Day, on a Saturday. The attention to detail was impressive. I would most certainly go back!
Our waitress was beyond amazing and made our experience that much better. Thrilled with everything, as always.
Always a treat! We especially enjoy the bistecca for two. And the prosciutto appetizer is excellent.
Well, they had run out of what I originally ordered as a main course. What I did ordered, agnolotti del plin, was good but not great. The appetizer gnocchi Fritos with prosciutto was very good and unusual. They were very pleasant, but all in all, I have had better meals. Service was timely. And attention to detail was fine
This place never disappoints.. great food made with local sourced ingredients.. love it .. as always :)
I’ve been many times ! Timing was perfect for a Tuesday night !
Would recommend this restaurant, But not if you have dietary challenges. One of our party members is a vegetarian and our server was not forthcoming at all with any menu compromises... what, no marguerita pizza? The meatless red sauce on pasta, while nice they made it for him... was lousy.
The dishes the rest of us had were great.
Fantastic place to eat hands down. The decor is simple and clean, the space intimate and the location keeps overly touristy people away.
The waitress was knowledgeable and we let her choose the food for us from the minimal menu. Every item she picked was phenomenal and the service top notch.
Wonderful food and service.
From the milk fed seasonal lamb to the mint gelato that took mint ice cream to a new level of discovery our dining experience was sublime.
They were very accommodating when I showed up with my son sleeping in his stroller (the reservation hadn’t included a spot for him). The food was excellent, and our server was friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed Cotogna and hope to go back soon.
Warm and inviting atmosphere. My friend came 30 mins late and they didn't rush the experience. Food is precise and came out quickly. Anyone who's a fan must try the Sunday supper.
Food was amazing! The service wasn’t good at all... took someone 15-20 minutes to even offer water, then after that took a long time for someone to even come back and in between each meal was 10-15 mins of waiting.
We used to love this restaurant. Arrived at 3:00. We were largely ignored while we watched tables around get serviced. Server knew nothing of the wine list. Food was cold. Took over two hours to get 4 courses. Very disappointed and will not go back again.
The best italian food in San Francisco, with the freshest ingredients and delicious cocktails.
too noisy and tight space not relaxing but great food
Everything was sublime—the food, the service, the attention to detail. Fabulous meal! B
The Agnolotti del plin is always my go to favorite. Yum! And, the raviolo was fantastic! Loved all our other dishes, too.
Really fabulous food. The service was just so disappointing. It felt as if our waiter was “too busy” for us the entire meal. I’ve been a waitress and had that many tables before... its not impossible to give food service in a small space like that. It was simply just not important to him.
Always a perfect meal. Definitely a splurge for lunch but very much worth it.
One of my favorite Italian restaurants. Creative cocktails, beautiful and delicious plates, outstanding service. AND, a placemat wishing my guest a Happy Birthday, with his name, date and a clean one to bring home. Way to raise the making-someone-feel-extra-special bar. Thanks!
The little gem salad with a few sugar snap pea pieces was the only dish I liked. It was very fresh, crisp, perfectly dressed. Salmon was very small and tasteless as was the spring vegetable ragu underneath. Polenta blueberry cake was small and boring. I tasted two pastas ordered by fiends. One was Milanese (I think that was the name) which was ok, good size, comfort food which I would have found lacking something to make it interesting enough to eat more than a couple of bites. The other pasta I tasted was also just ok., peas with cream and ? However I liked the pastas better than the mains. The same week I had the quail with black garlic sauce and spigarello. There was an unfortunate sweetness to the dish. The cabbage starter was boring, the parsley sauce and blue cheese did not save it.
Great atmosphere and fabulous food!
An excellent experience all round - ambiance was cool and relaxed, the food was truly excellent, service was great. Thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. Thank you! Will be sure to come again.
Very limited menu. We chose the prix fix chef pairing. It was excellent. Good wine selection by the glass also. Very noisy, only good for one other person. Four or more persons would have a hard time shouting across the table. Nice that it shares quality food with the sister Michelin Star rated restraunt next door.
My Birthday dinner was made even more memorable by the excellent service we experienced. Staff was knowledgeable, attentive and professional. All our pasta dishes and pizza were delicious and expertly executed. The hostess set the tone as we entered and we were greeted warmly by her. Decor and ambiance was very welcoming.
Food is always incredible and an amazing dining experience!
Food was great!
A wonderful lunch with friends who had just moved here from SoCal. Had starters, pizza, pastas and good Italian wine. We had a great time, food was excellent!
Food, service, and ambiance not worth the price. Food was too sour. Mozzarella no better than super market stuff.
Interesting menu fresh ingredients well prepared without being fussy - great meal!
Food was OUTSTANDING! Such a cozy environment!
Great server! We had the carrot sformata as an antipasti, and the raviolo and agnolotti de plin as primis. All the food was very good. Noise level was fine but got a little loud at times.
