Da Flora is an Italian restaurant that sits just on the outskirts of North Beach in San Francisco. Locals cherish this beloved restaurant for the painstakingly prepared meals and romantic atmosphere. During dinner service, the Murano glass chandelier is dimmed to create the perfect ambience for an intimate dinner, while the candlelit tables invite guests to sit and relax for a delicious meal.
Da Flora's Chef Jen McMahon has traveled extensively through the Italian countryside and urban centers to perfect her special brand of cooking. Her dishes take the heart and soul from traditional recipes and infuse them with a personality all their own. House-made sweet potato gnocchi in a sherry cream sauce with bacon and sage as well as Sicilian rosa bianca eggplant caponata crostini are perfect examples of the unique perspective Da Flora brings to the plate.
Small but interesting menu; wait staff is friendly and attentive. Our sense was that there were a lot of local regulars who appreciated the quality of the restaurant. Definite return visit.
Amazing service, atmosphere and food!!!! Will definitely revisit again!
Always the first restaurant we go to in San Francisco and it never disappoints. Great atmosphere and service. Get the gnocchi and try something you wouldn’t ordinarily order because it’s going to taste great. The wines are good.
Intimate, eclectic, warm & welcoming, Da Flora is one of the brightest gems in a city of fabulous restaurants. Every dish is a star (warning: don't pass up the gnocchi), the small wine list is carefully chosen to beautifully pair with the food and the service is impeccable.
This remains one of my favorite restaurants in the city! From the decor to the tastes to the delightful waitstaff and chef every detail is considered while not pretentious. I was also very happy to see Flora herself there as a customer the last time I visited. A very unique and special place full of creativity and art.
Outstanding experience. Our waiter was fantastic and very engaging. Would highly recommend.
A perfect evening, with superior service, food and ambience. We loved every moment. This is a special place with attention to every detail. Simply lovely.
Very small and intimate with a limited menu (which is good). We ordered a variety of entrees and each one was delicious.
We had a wonderful anniversary dinner at Da Flora. Our food was incredible and our server, Christopher, was excellent.
I love going to Da Flora. They are so warm and welcoming, have very good food and wine, and it's quiet and charming. What more could one ask?
I've reviewed Da Flora before, and am back to reassure on some points and to register some loving criticism on others. It is still a terrific place for a quiet conversation, romantic date, or friendly get-together. The owners (who I believe are the chef and the sole waiter) are still as friendly as can be, and take very good care of the customers. But in previous visits the tastes seemed a bit more strong and intriguing, whereas this time everything -- from the porchetta slices in a tuna sauce, which sounded amazing on the menu, to the butterscotch pudding -- was a little muted, verging on bland. Portions were smaller, while prices remain high -- not stupid high, but I'd expect a little more for what I was paying.
I still love this place and will still come back, but if they're reading this, I hope this was just an off night.
I really loved the service and the atmosphere— it was absolutely lovely. The disappointment really came with the food. I ordered the mushroom and ricotta crepes. I was told it will be awhile because it’s made fresh, which was fine, but it certainly was not worth the wait. The flavor was a absent and it was a shame. The wine was fantastic, but I preferred the bread and oil.
Our long time favorite Italian restaurant in SF. Still as good as ever!
This place is a gem. Small, intimate neighborhood restaurant with great wine and food. The menu is limited and varies. Wines, starters, mains and desserts are designed to allow you to create a wonderful dining experience. The night of our visit, Diver Scallops were on the menu. They were perfectly seasoned and cooked (very difficult with scallops!), and on a bed of pureed celery root. Our table had 3 of the 6 secondis and they were all delicious. Desserts were amazing and made in-house. My butterscotch pot du crème was smooth and delicious. The service is warm, gracious and attentive, and we were not rushed in any way. We loved Da Flora and would absolutely recommend it for an intimate meal with a special person or real friends who you want to actually talk to during dinner!
One of our favorite restaurants in San Francisco. Truly wonderful Venetian cuisine.
Absolutely fantastic restaurant! One of our must go-to dining experiences whenever we are in SF. The gnocchi is the best we’ve ever had!! Service is impeccable and the owners friendly and approachable (not to mention being awesome chefs)!
Real neighborhood gem. Great food! Small and intimidate
This was our 3rd visit there and we will always keep coming back. Jen is a great chef and Darren and The Big Kid are diligent servers.
Our favorite SF restaurant did not disappoint. The tagliatelle was superb. Recommended wine excellent. We were greeted like the loyal customers we are, visitin 2-3 Times a year.
A Victorian parlor with warm and personal service. Not a place to rush thru nor a place to bring someone you don't intend to actually talk to. A place to appreciate the food and the service and the quiet room made for conversation. The food and Menu are hand-made and hand-written. Each entry is special as is the wine list. Invite someone for dinner who is special to you, who feels the same about you. Anything less, and atmosphere of this restaurant will expose you or them to the light. Kind of Twilight Zone.
This is a small intimate family run restaurant. All of the food is handmade. We had the beef carpaccio, sweet potato gnocchi, squid ink pasta and ling cod. Even the pasta was homemade. The food was fresh and delicious. Our waiter suggested a fantastic bottle of wine for us, based on my request.
You've walked by and admired the chairs. Now make a reservation...that special person in your life deserves it! Or...wander in with the strangers you just befriended at Specs and cement your friendship over a meal if you manage to snag a table :) Everything about Da Flora is touched by the magic of old San Francisco :)
Da Flora is one of our favorites places in our neighborhood. Great food. Incredibly warm service. Darren is the owner and right at the table serving you and making you feel incredibly welcome in his restaurant. Good place for the North Beach tourists, but even better for the locals. Becoming one of our go-to places.
Wonderful, cozy restaurant with excellent service. The sweet potato gnocchi is my favorite! I try to visit every time I'm in San Francisco.
Authentic venetian food, prepared well and served with a smile. The couple that run this restaurant are just lovely, and they've refined the art of creating an experience over many years. This place is especially good for a date. Conversations can be had without too much background noise.
Perfect for any get together
Loved this little Italian gem! Everything was so delicious!!
A Nice Spot right on Columbus with some window tables looking out onto Columbus. Lots of on Street parking in the area and also a parking garage located DIRECTLY across the street at 721 Filbert St. We Went there to have a bite before attending Cobb's Comedy Club which is just a short walk down the street. Their food is described on a handwritten menu, and is very seasonal and delicious. The one item you MUST try is their decadent Sweet Potato Gnocchi - light and fluffy and of course use the house made Focaccia to soak up the rich sherry cream bacon to die for gravy.
A wonderful family owned and operated neighborhood find!
Good food paired with a somewhat limited wine list.
Excellent food and service. Try everything. Have yet to have “bad” meal there.
Wonderful as always! Best restaurant in North Beach!
Love this place. There are plenty of trendier, hipper spots in SF but this place is truly special, timeless, delicious, and the service has so much love and warmth. We will make this a destination for special occasions always.
The entire experience was magnificent. It's a gorgeous, small place with terrific ambiance. The service was warm and genuine. The food was to die for. I was particularly taken with the handwritten menus. I'll definitely be back.
I don't know how many times we walked by this little corner hole in the wall restaurant but never stopped. We tried getting reservations several times but always booked and after eating there, we now know why.
Chef Jen knows her way around s kitchen. Her sweet potato gnochhi is VERY good. Next time I.ll order 2 so I won.t have to share with my wife!
The veal bolognese was outstanding.
Service by Darren and Chris quite friendly yet totally professional.
Very good and reasonable wines.
We will def go back.
I had a lovely meal at La Flora. It apparently has new management and chef since I last ate there well over a decade ago, and I was very pleasantly surprised. I had a well-dressed Caesar salad, some highly addictive focaccia, and a nicely done springtime riso piso (which I was told is Venetian for risotto). Wish I had had room for dessert, but another time. Furthermore, they serve some excellent wines by the glass. The service was super genial, attentive and enthusiastic. I definitely plan to go back.
The sweet potato gnocchi are the best I have ever had and make sure to ask for some extra focaccia to wipe up the extra delectable cream sauce. The salads are inventive and fresh. Menu changes slightly with available local ingredients. The wine list is mostly Italian and pairs well with the menu.
Outstanding food and great ambiance
Very good North Beach option for Italian cuisine. Easy parking across street with reasonable rates. Good option prior to or after Beach Blanket Babylon. Does NOT have a bar.
Our dinner was delicious but we all felt the pasta dishes were. Bit small.
Very nice. Good good, good service.
