Flour + Water
What Insiders Are Saying
Flour + Water in the Mission will always be one of our all time favorite Italian spots.
Delicious food, especially the pasta dishes. Unusual new addition was scallops -- fabulous flavor. Service was attentive and friendly; staff is always engaging and wonderful. A great place for food and enjoying the evening with a friend or friends.
We really enjoyed our dinner we were most pleased with the appetizers we had two delicious salads. The pasta’s were way too heavy in butter and cheese for us, it kind of overwhelmed the pasta We felt the same way about the pizza it also was really oily. The flavors were excellent just way too much butter and cheese for our liking. I would definitely go back for the salad’s and the wine list was lovely also.
Service is wonderful!
The food however was disappointing. We ordered three dishes for two people. The $60 Milanese was burnt and had to be sent back. The margarita pizza was good but salty. The pasta dish with Parmesan cheese and balsamic vinegar was swimming in butter.
What shame! 🤷🏻♀️
Not much to complain about. The service was good, we had a good time.
We opted for the pasta tasting menu. All the courses were fair to good. None of hem had the wow factor to it! Just that we have had better Pastas at flour+water. Today was not one of those days.
Went for Valentine's day, and we had a fantastic experience. The food is interesting and delicious, the ambiance is beautiful, and they played the whole SZA record which speaks to me. But be warned: it comes at great expense. Their prices are no joke.
Flour + Water is absolutely my go-to for fancy date nights or other special occasions. They never disappoint, and this time was no exception. The food was incredible, the service attentive, and the mood wonderful.
The pizza is delicious! The crust is amazing!! The pasta dishes are always flavorful!
Great staff, food is spectacular!
Outstanding service and really good food. The place is small and somewhat noisy. We enjoyed our meals and the wine was delicious even at $16 a glass. Prices are reasonable for San Francisco. I’d recommend trying it.
The food was amazing, but the music was a bit too loud for good conversation, which was a bummer given that this was a business meal.
Excellent in every way!
Meh food but VERY good vibes in the restaurant. Super romantic place. Probably won’t go again since the food was not that good. It’s not even about their prices. It’s just that the quality is just NOT there. Not worth the hype :/
context: I am obsessed with pasta and go to different pasta restaurants in the city EVERY week. No joke. When I say the pasta standards are not met, they. are. not. met.
Had a great time. Food was amazing. Was a bit loud so couldn’t enjoy the conversation.
Every dish was inventive, delicious and perfectly executed. However, the service paled in comparison-- rushed and impersonal. The décor also evidenced little effort (surprising given the clear design sense at sister spots Central Kitchen and Salumeria). So will definitely return for the food, but not the dining experience.
Wonderful experience, but music was WAY too loud! We asked to turn down, which they did but we felt like “old people”.
Recently returned to F+W for the first time in a couple years. The ambiance is great. The wine list is interesting and good. The chicory salad and two pasta dishes we had were attractive looking and pretty good, but a restaurant this renowned should be better than pretty good. Note to chef: cut the salt by 50%. We can't taste the underlying good food for the overpowering saltiness of every dish. Service was not attentive, despite the place being nearly empty. And other reviewers are right: turn down the music so we can talk to our dining partners.
Amazing pasta that isn't your typical heavy pasta. It's full of flavor and nuance, but doesn't sit in your stomach like a ton of bricks.
The italian food is pretty good but the prices don't match the quality of the food. The wine list is on the expensive side too.
One of my favorite dining experiences.
Service and food are excellent. Room a little too dark for my liking.
So incredibly good!
I've been trying to go here for awhile and finally made it happen.
They have a great mix of the classics with amazing unusual takes - turmeric, sweet potato and yuzu? but I've been dreaming about it since.
Only a slight knock on ambiance because of tight quarters, which is very much expected in SF, so really I'd prefer 5 stars with an asterisk...
Will definitely be back
Pizza better than Italy, pasta was lukewarm but delicious, dessert was very strange
Attentive service (sometimes too much so) and decent food. Prix fixe menu sounded better on paper than it actually was. Some courses definitely better than others. Doing it again, I would opt for individual menu options. And share.
Great Pasta and pizza. Fun place. Parking is a challenge
Some of the dishes from the tasting menu are really awesome. However, I don't really like those beetroots based ones feel like something is missing. The service needs a lot of improvement, very robotic and fake plus not very hygienic handling cutleries.
Host people and servers were friendly. Love beets but too much pickle flavor in the salad. I ordered bread because I was choking from the vinegar/pickle excess in the salad. Beets would have been great without the dressing. Sumac pasta had too much butter fat for my liking. Noise level was awful. Most diners could not hear each other's conversations.
Totally worth the drive over the Bay Bridge to this hoppin' corner restaurant! We loved every bite and the pasta was absolutely beautiful and perfectly prepared. The service is impeccable, with all hands on deck at all times, making everything run like a well-oiled machine. Nice people - everyone was very friendly! Music is LOUD tho so if you want to have a quiet conversation, maybe this place is a bit noisy.
Food was amazing!
We ordered too much though because we listened to the servers advice. 1 dish per person is plenty. And maybe some 1 app to share. (We were 4)
Also wish they had another bathroom (there’s only one for the entire restaurant)
But the food is so good that nothing else matters!
Amazing food and ambience.
Music was quite loud, and the selection was sporadic. Food is very salty and rich, and caused my date and I to have a stomach ache. Very tasty, nonetheless.
Great dinner with a friend. Been wanting to come here for years. And it certainly lived up to the hype. Everything was wonderful!
I have been going to Flour and Water for some time now but I think I'll be taking a break from it for a while. First, the service has become more of the type that says, "My, aren't you lucky to be dining here!" At best it was curt (with one exception but he wasn't our server for the evening) and at worst it was condescending. Secondly, I'm just tired of the fact that the music is too loud. They deliberately make this restaurant noisy by keeping the music cranked up every time; this is a deliberate choice on the part of the restaurant manager. Back when the food was excellent and the service was good I was willing to put up with it but those days are gone. Finally, the food just isn't exceptional any more. The food is still good (since we were all sharing we had a relatively large number of dishes) but it's no longer exceptional; heck, I probably wouldn't even call it "very good" any more. Too bad that this restaurant is showing its age.
Flour + Water is my favorite restaurant, no questions asked. The appetizers are good, the pasta is great, and the pizzas are even better (in my opinion). I love the ambience here and always have excellent service.
Recently, the pasta I ordered was too rich for my liking, but other than that everything was incredible. Order a pizza with a farm-fresh egg on top. You won't be disappointed.
my date and i both did the tasting menu. we enjoyed every course and every wine pairing so much! everything was amazing! definitely try the tasting menu - you won’t regret it. we try to go back and try it whenever the tasting menu updates as we enjoy it so much every time. the noise level was perfect - some background noise but quiet enough to have conversation easily.
Food was good, experience as a whole was nice. In regards to value I think the overall value was good but some courses were extremely variant in size which is nice for a multicourse menu but we had a 6 course so it seemed some of the items weren't worth the price. Overall it was a good value.
With a worldly trained palate I can confidently say this is the best pizza in the world. Consistently the most soul soothing meal in town and you can’t go wrong with your meal selections outside of pizza. It’s as though I sent my stomach to get a PhD and develop a menu each time I go to its restaurant. You speak stomach my friend.
