What Insiders Are Saying
Foreign Cinema in the Mission is a San Francisco classic for brunch, and dinner is solid too.
Still my favorite restaurant in San Francisco. They’ve only gotten better over time. An absolute class act.
Jordan our server was wonderful!! Loved this place and amazing food!!!!
Food was wonderful
We’ve waited 1 hour and 15 mins for two raw items, oysters and carpaccio. I’ve had to complain about the wait. When my pork chop came, it was raw.
The manager comp the pork chop and our drinks. However, when my server came with the check she said “sorry about the wait. It happens.”
Are you serious? You are not owning up to the bad service.
Great venue. Food not really. Like if you create an empty feeling on every bite of how bad the food is. Service was good.
Great date spot, lovely ambiance and the food is delicious although the portions small.
It was ok. The food was whatever didn’t know the movies play later in the night
The food lemon pasta dish was fabulous! ---could have been a little bigger serving though.
Came for anniversary. Had the halibut and chicken along with a a carafe of vino. Ambiance was intimate - loved the semi-outdoor seating with heat lamps and movie bar playing in the background. Service was on point! Looking forward to coming back in the future.
The food was fine - yummy, nicely cooked duck breast and very cold oysters, but it was unpleasantly loud. Couldn't converse with friends and left with ringing ears and hoarse voice. We sat in the inside space. The outside space with the screen seemed a little quieter as we walked through.
The food was incredible, everything was delicious and cooked perfectly! Our server was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We were impressed by brunch, want to come back for dinner!
Another amazing evening at Foreign Cinema! The ambiance, the food, the service, everything was wonderful. Everything we ate was delicious, Leo was our server and took great care of us and we were there for almost 3 hours. Always a pleasure to dine here and we look forward to going back soon!
Love this place! Very cool ambiance and the food and service were outstanding! Definitely a favorite.
I love Foreign Cinema. The space is beautiful and the menu is always interesting and the service great. I just find myself feeling tired of all these restaurants that are noisy. Foreign Cinema is noisy. We have to raise our voices to speak, and the music is too loud for me to relax and enjoy the food as fully as I'd like. Also, the waiter recommend the whoopie pie, so we ordered it, but it was very boring.
Food was ok, but rather underwhelming, especially at their prices. Noise was excessive and iunpleasant.
The portions of some dishes were small. The food is good, but not that great, especially for the price.
I've been going here for nearly 15 years and it never fails to impress. The salads are amazing and you can't go wrong with the scallops or the fried chicken. The ambiance especially if you are outdoors provides a very unique experience in San Francisco. I always like to have drinks at the bar in the front of the restaurant (Lazlo's) before my meal. Amazing staff and service. You will need reservations.
I don't think the steak I ordered was that good, however the chicken my guest had was very good.
Overall it was very good and would return again.
Great place for dinner and birthday celebration
Fantastic service, amazing food and a perfect ambiance for a special date night or a fun night out with friends
Beautiful outdoor seating, heaters kept it comfortable as it got dark
Couldn’t see a movie, would be nice to make it clear when it starts playing
Food was super overrated/overpriced for what it was. We got the halibut and the risotto. Both were so watery, they were basically slopping over the edge of the plates
Beautiful place. Service was awfully slow and inattentive, but the food was delicious and the atmosphere made up for it.
Perfect place for an anniversary dinner Great food and very attentive staff.
Food and atmosphere are both fantastic. Service was a bit uneven. Though our server was friendly and personable, we had to request more water and coffee refills numerous times. (Finally a bottle of water was left at our table which was great.) We ordered an appetizer which wasn't brought, but our server apologized for the error - it was brought to the table after our main courses and was taken off the bill which was appreciated. For the price of this restaurant, the servers should be a bit more attentive.
Great ambience, great service, great menu excellent execution. The mole a calamari was fantastic. We loved dining here and would definitely come back. Our only issue is and portion size.
I’ve been wanting to do brunch here forever and it didn’t disappoint! We all left feeling happy and not overgorged. Best Bloody Mary ever.
Great place. Delicious food and drinks, loved the atmosphere. Definitely recommend.
They ran out of almost everything on the menu and our server didn't notify us until after we 20 or so mins. I think he forgot to put in our order. The cinnamon bun came in cold and super dry. It looked like it had been sitting on the pass for awhile.
As the crowd became larger, our service became smaller.
The food and ambiance was amazing. I would go back just for that. Service sucked. Waited 5 minutes after sitting down just for our waiter to finally give us menus. Only times he came to the table was to take our order, after a busser had to tell him we wanted to order more food because he never checked up on us, and then once more for dessert. Throughout the two hours we spent there, he never checked on us. The bussers checked up on us to make sure everything was okay with our experience.
My first time having brunch here and the food is amazing! Had the plancha, champagne omelette, and shakshuka - all of which were very good, especially the plancha. Serving portions were the perfect size for sharing between everyone at the table (we had 3 people).
Highly highly recommend the cinnamon bun to start your morning. Literally every other table around ours ordered the cinnamon bun and for good reason!
Come here a little before 11am when the restaurant opens though; it can get packed really quick for brunch.
5/7 would come here for brunch again.
Erin was honestly the best part of our special night; she was very charismatic, fun & wonderful. Thank you Erin for making our first time at Foreign Cinema unforgettable! :)
Incredibly disappointed with the service.
Food was very good though!!
My partner has a garlic intolerance and asked the waiter for a dish without garlic. He said the main dish she chose had no added garlic. But there was so much garlic in the sides that she couldn't eat it.
The drink I ordered as a finish did never arrive.
We never felt welcome at this place.
Finally, in the night me an my partner both got sick from the food. I think it was the garlic and lots of salt which made us dry out.
I've been to Foreign Cinema before but would not go again after this visit. When we arrived the place was jam packed and very loud - more like dining in a school cafeteria. The service was not great - our server must have had too many other tables to see to, as it took ages for her to even hand us a menu after we arrived. My companion's pork chop was delicious and cooked to perfection, but my Kobe beef was tough and poorly cooked. We had two cocktails, two mains, and one glass of wine which altogether came to more than $150. For the very high cost of a meal for two, this was quite poor value.
A very welcoming place, with absolutely amazing food! Smoked salmon appetizer was really good, entrees were too. But that bread pudding for dessert? That was phenomenal! We actually chose the venue because of the movies, but the food will make us come back!
Met a friend for dinner. Seated right away in a huge room with good lighting and a movie projected on the wall of the dining room. Waitress came to greet us and we started with special cocktails which were very good. We had the calamari for appetizer and it was very tasty. My friend had the scallops and I had the Kobe beef.my beef was cooked to perfection and very tasty. I’m not a big scallop fan but my friend also enjoyed his dinner. Then we had dessert which was also very tasty. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
Second time having the dry aged ribeye: incredible!!!
It was our first time and we really enjoyed our experience. I thought since we were asked when we booked the reservation , was it for a special occasion ...something might be done done or said. Nope. Nothing! We drove an hour and a half to celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary at FOREIGN CINEMA and it would have been nice to have had it acknowledged.
Cocktails, dinner, the service were all wonderful. we'll definitely be back!
