This restaurant serves delicious food. Had the four course dinner which consisted of about ten different dishes chosen by the chef and it was an amazing experience.
Good imaginative food... excellent service... food somewhat salty for me.
A fantastic meal. everything from food ; service and ambience is excellent.
a unique and just lovely restaurant. A must if you are in San Fran and value a memorable dining experience without having to spend a fortune.
Please remove one table so everyone is not on top of each other and we can have a few more inches so a more private conversation is possible. It’s very loud so something should be done about the acoustics, if possible. The food and service were impeccable and we certainly had a wonderful 1st anniversary dinner.
Great for special occasions and romantic evening. Very lively and packed (on a Sunday night).
Food excellent and service but the place is unbelievably noisy when full. To make it worse the tables are extremely close together and tiny in size. Try it when it’s slow
Have been to frances multiple times, while the food is always great the service has been a hit or miss. The food doesn’t come out on time and we have to flag our server down too often as they don’t check on you to even take your dirty plates away.. or to simply ask you how your meal tasted? Or if you need anything else?
We were warmly greeted & seated promptly upon arriving. The service was excellent and the bavette steak and black cod entrees were tastefully presented and flavorful. For dessert, we had the best pear tart ever! Next time, I’m going to order an extra pear tart to take home. 😋
Such a lovely, welcoming, delicious place for a birthday. The chef's menu was a real treat
Everything was wonderful. The food. The service. But it’s just horribly noisy. It’s too bad really because everything else is perfect.
Such a treat and delightful experience. We had not been in several years and were reminded that we need to come more often. Service was impeccable and the food superb. We did the chef's selection which gave us both a taste of the majority of the menu (a total of 9 selections). I highly recommend that option. Paired with a wonderful bottle of wine, it was a delightful evening.
We love this place, and usually celebrate birthdays and anniversaries here, its so simple and great each time.
Easily one of the best meals I've had in my entire life.
Had a foggy julep which was yummy!
Followed by the beignets, which were delicious! There was just enough for 2 to share.
My friend and I then shared the steak and black cod with a side of carrots and everything was incredible.
It was amazing how each vegetable had an entirely different flavor, the asparagus blended beautifully with the steak, and the broccolini with the black cod. Everything was cooked to perfection and the portion sizes were perfect. I couldn't imagine much more on my plate!!
We finished off the night with a boozy affogato.
Luckily I live in the South Bay and a trip back here is not hard, I cannot wait to bring my husband back!
Crowded, but without a din interfering with conversation; excellent food and professional service.
Such great food and service. Fortunate to have this gem in the neighborhood!
I enjoyed my date night at Frances, due largely to the excellent service and welcoming ambiance. The food, though nicely prepared and presented, left something to be desired.
We opted for the chef's tasting menu and ending up regretting our choice - the portions were on the small end (one shrimp per person on the squid ink pasta, for example). We had FOMO seeing diners around us with full entree portions - the bavette looked particularly popular. The panisse frites, Brussels sprouts, and duck breast were the highlights.
Overall, flavors were nice, but nothing special or unique. I appreciated the option to bring a bottle of wine with a $25 corkage and took advantage. The staff was very attentive and warm. Overall. Frances is a worthwhile stop for those who enjoy Californian classics, but I'd stick to ordering a la carte.
The food was decent but does not warrant the price tag. I actually had an upset stomach afterwards possibly because the medium-rare steak was too rare. It was also too loud inside.
Wonderful. Loved it. Will be back!
The food was extraordinary and the service impeccable. If you want a stuffy boring French restaurant, don’t come here. But if you want fresh exciting and innovative California cuisine at its best, this is the place.
They had a chefs menu this evening which was fantastic and nicely paced - we didn’t feel rushed and we felt very well taken care of.
Best meal of 2019!!!
Amazing service, amazing food!
Another outstanding dinner at Frances! This was our 3rd visit in 2 years, and we'll be back for more! Fantastic food, attentive, friendly service, great wine, neighborhood feel. What more can you ask for?!
I would recommend but warn about noise level and close settings of the tables. Very tight and noisy.
Food is lovely.
This place is still going strong! The food is innovative but fresh and market driven. The service is friendly but professional. And the lumberjack cake is worth the hassle of getting a reservation!
The appetizers and first course were delicious but the main courses that we ordered were mediocre. My duck breast was tough and not moist at all. I felt that it needed a sauce to liven it up a bit. There was not enough bulgur as the base. My son's steak was not very flavorful and tough also.
The dessert was delicious (chocolate) was fabulous however
We happened upon Frances after shopping in the area. We were fortunate enough to get a last minute reservation.
The space is loud, and does not seat many people, so reservations recommended. Not a place to go for a romantic evening.
Our waitress was great! Attentive and knowledgeable about both the food and wine. She gave us great wine suggestions.
We ordered the chickpea fritters (amazing) and shared a salad and linguine with burrata (delicious). We were not too hungry so those dishes were plenty.
Cant wait to return!
Great service, knowledgeable servers, fantastic wine list and the food was truly fantastic. A really great experience.
As always sensible food
We felt bombarded as everything came out of the kitchen much too quickly--one dish after another kept us from enjoying a leisurely dinner. And most of the dishes were over-salted by an extreme amount, so much so that we had to ask one of your waiters to give us a different dish. The noise and feeling of being crowded in was what I was left with after my experience not the food. I see no reason why I would return to your restaurant.
We had a great time!
Overall a great night. The food was exquisite, the service good for being so crowded and the noise level awful. But I will always go back as it is never disappointing!!
I love Frances.
Amazing start to finish!
Food was remarkable and service was exceptional me and the gf had a great anniversary dinner
Food was exquisite, service was amazing, the ambiance was great. This place had the whole package. Definitely worth every penny and a definite must if you’re in town
Absolute favorite restaurant in SF! Everything is phenomenal here, including the service!
Love Frances - wonderful food that is both interesting and innovative but also feels familiar. We had the tasting menu which was a great way to sample lots of great things from the menu, and very reasonably priced.
Tables are super close together which makes it hard not to hear other people’s conversations but still loved the warm, laid-back atmosphere.
very unique food and always good service. Prices aren't reasonable but the experience is good
The reservation request was for the bar but changed our mind and they were accommodating and found a table. We had to request for bread (everyone else had bread) and due to one bathroom there was a wait. Noise level is high and tables very close to each other, tables seem small so little room for dishes. They were minor concerns but our reason for not giving the maximum stars. However food was excellent!
