American
Chef Brandon Kida, best known as the executive chef at Hinoki & the Bird in Century City and more casual restaurant Go-Go Bird in Culver City, brings Japanese American cooking to Hollywood.

Gunsmoke is named after a western radio show that was recorded at CBS Radio studio where the restaurant is now housed.

While Kida’s previous restaurants incorporated some of the chef’s Japanese heritage, Gunsmoke is the first one fully dedicated to serving dishes inspired by Kida’s second-generation Nikkei experience. A dish of local raw tuna layered with country ham and green strawberry best encapsulates the chef’s culinary point of view at Gunsmoke.

Rhino Williams, proprietor of Lost Property Bar in Hollywood, is charged with the beverage menu. Gunsmoke’s signature cocktail — a Kyoto ice tea — comes with vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and house made cantaloupe soda.

Definitely hidden location at the ground floor of some hotels and other complexes, we sat outside and had some appetizers and a drink before heading to the Pantages. The street has quite a few homeless encampments but I’m not sure if you can really get away from that these days. The Brussels sprouts appetizer was tasty, the tartare and sweet potato were good but not as filling or plentiful. The service was great and the outside patio was cute.

This is a hidden gem just two blocks from the Pantages. Small plates packed wonderful flavors. The Smoking Monk cocktail is a wonderful experience and the Orange Wine from Italy was such a surprise. Wonderful peaceful meal. Best: cabbage salad, white fish, brussel sprouts, Ube flan.

Service was super-friendly and attentive and our coursed-out menu was so good. Inventive dishes I was excited to try and they fulfilled on the promise. We were there for a pre-Pantages show so it was rather quiet on a weeknight and we enjoyed being out on the outdoor patio. Would definitely return.

Delicious foods. Went during Dine LA and the special menu was exceptional. Amazingly wonderful service. A perfect place to have a fancy dinner pre-show at the Pantages. It is also cheaper to valet park there compared to other crowded lots around the theater.

We went for Dine LA and loved the appetizers we got. The shiitake mushroom was the best, highly recommend, and the warm cabbage was good too. We also really enjoyed the cucumber cocktail. Lamb sisig and rockfish mains were fine, but wouldn’t be worth paying full price. Lamb had one too many spicy elements and rockfish was a little bland. Chocolate cake and bread pudding desserts were fine too, but again wouldn’t pay full price. We’d return for the appetizers and cocktails though!

Everything was delicious, interestingly seasoned so our tastebuds were bursting, and beautifully plated. Shout out to Roz who created a memorable dining experience for our table!

Went to try diner's choice new restaurant from open table. We opted for the DineLa experience and we were not disappointed. Food is excellent and the service is superb. The warm cabbage salad, scallion focaccia, and lamb sisig are all great choices. We got to meet the pastry chef and enjoyed his wonderful creations. We would definitely be back.

Beautifully presented craft cocktails followed by tapas style dishes that were each so different but perfect balance of taste, texture, aroma and flavor combinations. Dinner at Gunsmoke is an elevated experience of the senses not to be missed. Once you've tried it, you'll keep coming back.

Love, love, love it! Every plate was a hit - delicious and creative. Dishes that don’t sound like your cup of tea, you’ll change your mind after a bite. Drinks awesome, too. Staff and service were excellent. From walking in the door to good-byes on the way out. Each person friendly, fun and super helpful. And love the vibe. Outdoor patio beautiful and spacious, and good music (softly). Been twice and going back; and menu changes so always new things to try.

Very chic place to eat at. The seafood dishes were amazing however for $38 the lamb sisig just didn't wow me. The portion sizes are very small so I kinda feel like it was a bit overpriced. Overall, it was nice but I felt like the menu lacked cohesion and for the price of everything and the 20% gratuity included it felt a little underwhelming. But if you want to feel like you're in a restaurant like the one in 'the menu' you will really like it!

The food was really quite good, but not special enough for 5 stars. There was also an entree that required explanation and was missing them - it was a lettuce wrap lamb concept on two plates with a prepped at the table egg in a shakshuka pan… which wasn’t obvious until we were told at the end of the meal what to do. Staff seemed new or young, but eager and pleasant.

This is a fun restaurant and we all enjoyed it. The food and drinks were good. The billl added up to a fairly expensive meal, but we all felt happy when leaving. I am 63 and I was there with three younger adults (late 20's). Were arrived at 6pm because we were seeing at show at the Pantages Theater and you can walk to the theater from there. There was only one other couple in the entire restaurant at 6pm so I guess eating early in LA is not a thing (we are from OC). I mention my age because they had loud rap music playing in the restaurant, and since there were no other diners to drown it out, it dominated the room and certainly not to my taste. The 20 somethings with me thought it was OK but were surprised with the choice due to the feeling of the restaurant was a more simple ,warm vibe. We each had a drink and discussed the menu, which was interesting and set up to share at the table. Our waitress was very good and responsive. The food was excellent. My daughter is Gluten free due to migraines, so the waitress gave her the selections to meet her needs and modified one of the dishes so she could share it with us. We had the Local Tuna, which was good, especially with the gnocco Fritto (Like the dough from egg rolls) - the fish was a bit fishy, but still very good. Warm Cabbage Salad - one of the stand-outs and a must order. Everyone liked it! Sweet potato - Purple sweet potato - basically a deconstructed loaded baked potato- the potato was very creamy, but not a stand- out. Shitake Mushroom - This WAS a stand out with delicious garlic butter with small warm baguette- we joked that we were going to blow away the other patrons around us at the theater after this...but worth it. Crispy Quail - Good, nicely cooked and moist - I probably would not order this again. California Rockfish - This was good, quite spicy and perfectly cooked. Unfortunately, we were all quite full by this time, so eating the most expensive item on the menu last was not smart.

Service was amazing- huge shout out to our server Roslyn, she was wonderful. The food was unique, served and presented beautifully. Avocado fritters were served more like a fried deconstructed latke but so yummy and the sauce - delicious. The cabbage salad came to the table and it looked like a wrapped up present. I think I could eat that green goddess dressing on everything. We also had the crudo, crisp- refreshing and light . The rockfish- again so much flavor. The only item we did not like was the quail- it was gamey and had a weird taste. There were four of us and none of us enjoyed it. Chocolate cake- gone in a blink of an eye . Will return - it is quite pricey but a great experience. The restaurant is beautiful.

This is a gem in the middle of Hollywood. Tucked away in an upscale apartment building it is almost hard to find but once you do, it is some of the best food out there. This is a small plates place where you get to sample a variety of dishes. Everything we had was good but the stars were the crispy quail and the purple sweet potato. They are not to be missed. My daughter lives around the corner so we will be back for sure!

All the food we tried was tasty and interesting, the mushrooms were great, and the baguette was a necessary touch . The cauliflower salad, although short on cauliflower, had a great dressing. The branzino was also prepared very nicely and tasted great. One issue is the mandatory 20% tip automatic added to the bill, which is a bit presumptuous of level the service being offered . Another issue hard to control by the restaurant is the way the patrons dress. Given the level of the food being offered, you'd think people would be compelled to dress for an elegant evening out. Sadly, a lot of patrons showed up in couch chic. As noted, hard to control. On another note, we were seated by an open patio door on a chilly night. We asked and were moved to an adjacent table, a little farther away from the cold. A few minutes later, we were asked to move back to our original table, reportedly to make way for a party of 4. This party of 4 never materialized, and we were uncomfortable at the cold table for the remainder of our visit. Overall, the food will bring us back to try other items on the menu.
