Vietnamese
Le Colonial, Chicago's famed Vietnamese institution, is a celebration of the seductive spirit and vivid flavors of 1920’s French Colonial Southeast Asia. Heralded as "an escapist’s paradise," Le Colonial recently moved from its location of over 20 years at 937 N. Rush Street to Chicago’s iconic Oak Street. Located on the third floor of the building, Le Colonial features a dining room, bar and lounge, private chef’s dining room and an all-season terrace overlooking the bustling Oak Street.

What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
7.4

A formal French-Vietnamense restaurant in the Gold Coast that's not the coolest place in town but is quiet, well-run, and good.

Ratings 7.0-7.5:These are your neighborhood standbys - the places that you’ll happily hit for some pasta or a quick salad, but not a restaurant you are bringing your parents or (god forbid) a date to. The true embodiment of good but not great.

We have been going to the restaurant for the past 23 years . Since they moved they changed the menu and all the good dishes are gone . What they have now are sub par . Please bring all the old dishes back .

Loved the old location and was sad to hear it moved around the block, but no doubt one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago. The new decor/ambiance was absolutely reminiscent of the old spot and done incredibly well. Love it and can always count on great food and service

Le Colonial continues to be one of my top favorites in Chicago. I love the new restaurant's atmosphere and it continues to be romantic and a hot spot in one! I wish they did not change the menu but understand they wanted to bring some new items. I have always felt some of the servers could be better. Rafael is the best host/manager ever!

Overall great experience. A bit more crowded and less intimate than the older Le Colonial location.
Food was fabulous as always. We missed our fried wonton dessert though.

What a wonderful new space Le Colonial is now located in on Oak St.
No outside sidewalk cafe, but a fabulous Terrace with large windows overlooking Oak St. away from the noise and fumes of traffic. I love it! I also love the way they kept the feel of the original restaurant in the inside room and a fabulous big bar room as well.........
They have made some changes to the menu, but everything I’ve tried is even better (if that’s possible).
I’ve been there twice since the move a couple of weeks ago and plan to come back often! Really Love everything about the New Le Colonial!

My first visit to the newly relocated Le Colonial on Oak Street — and I was simply in awe of the entire experience. The venue is unbelievably beautiful and evocative. The new menu is super delicious and I can’t say enough about the crispy Brussel Sprouts, the Japanese eggplant and large plate salmon dish. The staff were very excited and proud of their new space and menu; they were fully prepared and in command of all their activities including seating, pacing, flow and serving. I am so happy Le Colonial reopened in a new, very lovely space in the neighborhood. Thank you for an amazing dinner experience. Coming back soon with friends!

My wife and I were regular diners at the old location of Le Colonial on Rush. We decided to try out the new location on Oak, a few weeks after it opened.

I will start my review by explaining why I gave my review the lowest possible rating of 1 star: it was entirely related to the experience outside of the restaurant. I firmly believe that a rating should be based upon the entirety of the dining experience, not just the table service and the food.

We chose to valet park our car. The valet suggested we call 15 minutes ahead of departure. It actually took 19 minutes for the car to arrive despite there being no other guests waiting for their cars. I think their valet garage must be in Bucktown given how long it took.

When the car arrived, the dashboard flashed that the key fob was not in range. When I inquired as to the location of my keychain, the valets seemed perplexed. They looked around my car for several minutes and then claimed they needed to go back to the garage to look there. After another 10 minutes, I noticed that my keys were on the roof of the car, partially hanging off the trunk hatch. Apparently, they place keys on the roof when they park the car. It was close enough to the ignition when they started the car to activate the ignition but it slid back when driving back to the restaurant. Only the decorative air foil stopped the keys from falling off on the drive. Along downtown Chicago.

Not only was the valet not apologetic, the doorman, who noticed what was going on, decided to retreat to the 1st floor antechamber to avoid being involved in my displeasurable experience.

Given the cost of dining at Le Colonial, this horrible parking experience warrants us not returning to this establishment. Unfortunate.

The fact that there is a charge for “ice” when ordering a cocktail on the rocks, and then the reason given is that you get more of a “pour” with the rocks is HOKEY!! Stick with wine instead or order straight up and add your own ice from your water.

Have been going to this establishment for over 20 years. It is in a new location right around the corner and it is a WOW place now. Food was great as always . Had the best experience ever with our waiter Francisco. He made our evening incredibly enjoyable more so than ever before. Keep that guy!!!! Only suggestion is PLEASE put the half roast chicken back on the menu.... we are dining again on the 23rd of March and hope it is on the menu or a special.

I said yes I would recommend if you are interested in the atmosphere and great service, then this is a gem. We found the food to be average however the presentation was beautiful. I had the duck and it was quite tough and chewy. My wife had the whole snapper and it was just ok but not boned properly so a challenge to eat.

If you're in Chicago, you have to check this place out! We had the shrimp rolls, pot stickers, spicy shrimp stir fry, green beans and pineapple ice cream dessert. Everything was outstanding. The food is so fresh with excellent flavor. Our server made great recommendations and was very pleasant. The atmosphere is so unique. We will definitely be back. This is now a new favorite restaurant!

Our server was extremely sassy about gluten-free options. Don’t be a place that openly promotes gluten-free food on your menu and then be difficult when people have questions or concerns about their auto-immune disease and the safety of their meal. Also- my pho tasted like nothing. My sisters dish had flavor but was chewy. I was stunned that the food was that bad. This place has been around forever.

I like to eat here whenever I visit Chicago! Lovely place, cozy and great food!
The ravioli is my favorite dish (nothing to do with italian ravioli despite the name). The deserts are also delicious, specialy the passion fruit chocolate cake and lemon tart.
We were told that they are moving to a new location and I really hope that they don’t loose the great atmosphere they currently have!

Food delicious and they let us linger. But the server was so inattentive! She ignored me before my friend arrived (I am a woman, btw), and throughout dinner I had to ask over and over for a water refill. The trout in banana leaf is delicious. Doesn't seem like real Vietnamese to me, and it's pricey...but a nice evening. I would try it again and hope for better service.

One of my favorite Asian restaurants in Chicago. Food is never disappoint! They changed the menu a little bit since my last visit, new items were delicious. Service can be better though. Our glasses were filled with water just once upon arrival and were empty for the rest of our meal. The service was very slow.
