Le Colonial - Chicago
What Insiders Are Saying
A formal French-Vietnamense restaurant in the Gold Coast that's not the coolest place in town but is quiet, well-run, and good.
My husband and I have been patrons of Le Colonial for several years at the old location. This new location has really improved the ambiance. The food and service are superb as well. We are thrilled with the "new" Le Colonial!
The weather was beautiful so the windows were all open and it created a magical ambiance. The food & service are consistently outstanding, and their new location is perfect. Highly recommend.
The new restaurant is lovely! The food was delicious as always. My waiter was new to the restaurant and did not monitor my food service well. I waited 20 minutes for my second course which was an appetizer. However, overall experience was great.
Beautiful new space on Oak Street. Food and Service were great. Menu seems smaller than before but still plenty to choose from.
This is a 10/10 restaurant. I’m restaurant owner of 8 fine dinning restaurants so a travel all over the world to look for new trends and ideas constanly. And have visited at least 30 of the top 100 restaurants in the world list.
Le Colonial blew my mind, beautiful decorated and the food and service was impecable.
For the past 15 years every trip to Chicago included a stop @ Le Colonial. We have enjoyed every experience and this last visit to the new location was no exception. To be quite honest we didn't think it could be any better than the original but it was. The beautiful new dining room, the veranda and bar all evoke the original with a new an updated decor. The food was beyond fantastic and the service was accommodating but not obtrusive.
Bravo Le Colonial we look forward to many more delightful visits
This restaurant is nothing like the class act at the Rush St location. The server team rushed us through dinner to the point where we literally had to tell them to disappear unless we asked them to return. Menu was abysmal, and the restaurant crammed. I used to frequent the other one, but will absolutely never go back. Don’t even waste your time.
Food good but not great. Smallish portions.
The decor takes you to the tropics with elegance. The service is attentive and the food divine. Highly recommend
My husband and I celebrated my birthday this past Sunday at Le Colonial. It was a lovely evening from beginning to end...the new location is stunning as well. The staff was accommodating and remembered the Birthday note.
The eggplant starter and sea bass entree were superb. I also recommend their signature margarita ...very good and I am particular about margaritas..🙌
The new location is great and quite beautiful. We sat in the bar area which was quiet and had a breeze coming in from the outdoor dining balcony. Food was excellent if not a bit pricey, but in the end it was worth the cost. We shared the monkfish appetizer and the whole crispy snapper. Both were excellent. Also shared a bottle of very nice Chablis which complemented the dishes nicely. Ended with the creme brûlée which was tasty but a small portion for the $11.00 price tag. Overall an excellent dining experience and we plan to return on our next visit to Chicago.
So amazing. Perfect for a birthday celebration!!
The weather was not the best in Chicago on Sunday (19 May 2019). Perhaps, it affected my culinary appetite. Still, Luis; my favourite waiter was ready to cheer me up with his warm hospitality and smile! 😊👍
Always a good experience. Food and drinks are always good. The restaurant is nice. One down side is the tables are too close to each other.
Dined there before, never for lunch. Have always loved. Perhaps we ordered badly, but ordered light lunches, with large bowls of soup. The lunches were bland. We left hungry.
Our experience at Le Colonial was very disappointing. I'll focus on two main issues, although there were others as well. First, despite having specifically mentioned on our Open Table reservation that I was celebrating my guest's milestone birthday, and despite also having mentioned that to the Le Colonial representative who called me the day before the dinner to confirm our reservation, there was absolutely no acknowledgement during our dinner of my friend's birthday - - zero. Second, I was astonished by how cramped the new dining room space is - - it was like being stuck in a middle seat in coach. I am not a large person (5'7", 145 lbs.), and it was impossible for me to enter and exit my seat without bumping my chair into the back of the chair at the adjacent table (and they likewise bumped into mine). I can't imagine how a larger person would cope with this situation. I also had disappointments with the food, but I'm not going to pile on at this point. Suffice it to say that the contrast between this experience and our prior experiences at Le Colonial's old location were like night and day. Going forward, I'm selecting a different restaurant for special occasions.
I was pleasantly rewarded to a much improved ambiance. Same good food. But a great place that provided a wonderful dinner experience. The design of the space is inviting. You can have a pub like atmosphere or bright and cheery by the windows. Very enjoyable. I will be back and with friends!
Great food and location. Went there for our anniversary and had a wonderful time. Would give it 5 star if the tables were a little spread out and less noisy. Overall a very good experience.
The new place is beautiful. I loved the old location but it was getting tired. Love the red snapper
Enjoyed with my girlfriend for her birthday dinner. Sharing plates was recommended by our waiter and an excellent choice. Loved the flavoring on their ribs, their pho, and the Peking duck and sticky rice.
Excellent meal. Food done to perfection. Thx a lot
The new Le Colonial is absolutely beautiful and the food is amazing!
Excellent service. Friendly staff. Delicious food. Strongly recommend.
I had a pleasant time for lunch at Le Colonial 😊👍 Mr. Luis is excellent and hospitable. I feel nurtured under his care! 😋👌🍹🍵👍
The new location/buildout is stunning.
The food and service is still excellent. Le Colonial will always be in my top 5 restaurants in Chicago .
Our meal (every single dish) was outstanding! The new space is just as lovely as the previous one, but fresher!
Server Jose Luis acted as if we were an intrusion on his personal time. Loved the food, but expected at least an average level of service. We will be back, but it will be a while. We’re going to give this one a rest.
My mother and I had lunch on Mother’s Day. From the time we arrived the service was excellent. We had the seafood ceviche to start. Fantastic. I now have a favorite new dish called bon sate. Filet Mignon in a creamy spicy curry with yams. Definitely will be back.
Extremely noisy, food service very slow, meals cold, appetizers good, but main courses mediocre.
It seems the restaurant has become very popular before has worked out a few problems.
The other venue had a beautiful, calming ambiance, this place seems a lot more commercial.
We were there early on a Sat. nite. Will try again on a week nite to see if there is less noise
and confusion from the staff.
Im floored that this restaurant does not have at least 4.8 stars - however I'm confident that will change with the new location, which is absolutely beautiful. Le Colonial is hands down one of the best restaurants in Chicago - its a must visit.
The space is beautiful. Service and food were great.
I frequented Le Colonial’s old location on Rush and this new location is even better. It’s gorgeous, spacious and ornate. The service was exceptional and the food was as well. Our server Jesus was great! 5 stars without a doubt.
Staff a little green - not real comfortable in the role - hostess stand a little unprofessional
Food temp was not great- fish came out warm/cool not hot
Hvac system blows too directly in seats at window.
Space is very nice - but the old place had more of a relaxed comfortable feel - almost felt like you were in Foreign country restaurant- which is one of the things that made the place so unique. New place feels like it’s going for more of a hip trendy feel.
Still very nice place - a little work on staff and operations and also the credible feel of an old very high end culture restaurant.
This is my second time dining here and I love the cuisine and ambiance. The attractive dining room is one of the few I've been to in Chicago or other cities where the noise level stays quiet for good conversations regardless of how crowded it gets.
My only complaint this time is that our waiter was less cordial then the previous one we had and the busboys were on top of us to remove plates .....which I hate!
However, that will not deter me from returning since it is truly a local gem
New restaurant is exquisite - new menu items are fabulous! Environment is lovely! Wines and bubblies are excellent. Service a bit slow
Everything was perfect. Great all around!
Ali was with a client and felt very rushed and my entree was cold. I did not send it back as I didn’t want my guest to feel uncomfortable.
Amazing food. Tuna Tartare to die for. Panna Cotta proved you went to heaven
We absolutely LOVED the new location of Le Colonial! We returned after first coming 13 years ago during previous Chicago Travels! The porch seating is amazing! Beautiful natural light coming in the windows. The wait staff was SO KIND and very impressive! We will definitely add this restaurant to our annual Chicago trip! Food was DELICIOUS!
The food was wonderful and came out pretty quickly! The waiters were very attentive. My favorite restaurant in Chicago!
