For over eighty-five years, New York's defining cultural moments have taken place at Russian Tea Room. Ever since members of the Russian Imperial Ballet founded the restaurant in 1927, it has been a second home for boldface names and the intellectual elite-an exclusive enclave where actors, writers, politicians, and businessmen planned their next deals and feted their friends' latest Carnegie Hall performances.

Everyone knows the Russian Tea Room after so many years. Very pricey. Duck was excellent. Onion soup had loads of onion (yay for that) but the broth was more sauce like and not very warm. I guess a prefer the French style. Borscht was very tasty. I would recommend for the experience of it and saying you were there. Perhaps just go for tea service.

The restaurant itself is very beautiful. We were seated in a semi-circular booth, which was very comfortable and kept us far away from other diners. The service was very good. Unfortunately, the price you’re paying for the food and drink is EXORBITANT and most of the food was only okay. Not bad, but not what you would expect for the price. Delicious food is very important to me and I don’t mind paying for it. But I resent paying the price for delicious food and not getting it.

Waited 2 years for this due to covid... in the end, was pretty disappointing, slow service, but they told us it was going to be due to short staff... Main course order was wrong, when it did come out it tasted "microwave hot"... starter and mains were pretty bland, no depth of flavour and very well presented. Only got one drinks order in as nobody ever came back. Overall bit disappointing, massively overpriced for what we got

We had reservations for 6 pm before a Broadway show. They were overbooked. We stood in line at the hostess stand and when we made it to the front of the line at 6:30 pm, they said it would be another 1/2 hour. We asked yo sit at the bar. Our onion soup was cold and the bartender never put in our order. People were getting their food who sat down after us. When I asked, the bartender said it was coming out soon. We left a little after 7:30 pm with no food! This restaurant was highly recommended and we were super disappointed! Too many great restaurants in NYC to risk another bad experience here.

We had another amazing dinner at RTR last night before a Broadway show. The ambience is totally unique. The service was impeccable, even when it was a full house. We wanted an exciting and elegant dinner experience, but we were on a tight timetable. Our expectations were surpassed and our dinner was delicious! Can’t wait to go back again!

We did the Saturday tea service, the sandwich course was alright. However, the pastry course was almost inedible and drew comparisons to day old bread store baked items. The scones were too dry to eat, the butter served almost frozen and unable to spread. The cupcakes were just as bad. Yeh ambiance is great and the venue beautiful, the service was also nice. However, for the price tag you’re better to go almost anywhere else if you’re wanting to enjoy tea service.

I’ll preface this by saying that I was a waiter for many years and in the restaurant world/service industry most of my life so I am willing to give leniency and overlook a lot of things Disappointing. That word really is enough to sum up the whole experience. I’ve literally dreamt about going to the Russian Tea Room since I was a kid. Always figured it too chic and glamorous, an out of reach place for me. As an adult, I finally had the opportunity to go and found it truly disappointing. We went after a Broadway show-to be fair we were running late-had a 10:30 reservation and arrived at 10:40. I did call in advance to say we were on the way and was told “ The kitchen closes at 10:30, they are waiting on you.” Upon arrival we were told again, “the kitchen closes at 10:30. They are waiting for you.” I said as lightheartedly as possible to the host “I’m not really sure why you would take a 10:30 reservation if the kitchen closes at 10:30” to which he replied “Well, it’s Open Table they’ll take a reservation at 1 o’clock in the morning if you let them.” Not really sure what that meant but it certainly did not mean “Welcome”. Nothing we ate was remarkable in any way, shape or form, and as would be expected it was very expensive. We also found ourselves being rushed to order dessert prior to finishing our meals and to pay the check. Rush. Rush. Rush. If you’re in a rush or want to be rushed it’s a perfect place for you. Otherwise I would not recommend this perhaps “once grand” institution to anyone.

I took my son here for his 16th birthday. I mentioned it on the reservation form and there was no special treatment. The ambience is great, prices are spendy, but it is NYC. I enjoyed my beef Wellington, but my son ordered the ribeye and it was undercooked and very chewy. He sent it back and it didn't come out much better. Service is great. His steak was the only disappointment.

There is a 95 bucks high tea, that is kind of the only option imposed to you, or lunch. Being a tea house I was expecting to have a tea and some scones or finger sandwiches, but even if they are arriving them on the tea course there are not sold individually. What it makes it worse was that the server was rude when we said we did not want the course, remind you the only menu handed to us. I had to look the menu on line and order tea… that’s was my intention tea and scones or cake. It looks nice but not for a quick nice tea. Sadly felt a bit like a tourist trap

Finally had dinner at the famous Russian tea room and it did not disappoint. The hostess was welcoming and kind a d acknowledged our anniversary. The wait staff was prompt and courteous. They suggested drinks and menu items amd they were perfect. I had chicken Kiev and it was very crispy and delicious. My husband had the beef stroganoff and the beef was so tender and delicious. We did the pre theater meal and it was perfect for the price. We had dessert as well.

We booked a table for Thanksgiving as we were in NYC to enjoy it with our daughter who is studying here. We asked for a booth and were excited to enjoy a special evening, but were disappointed from the outset. The server seemed harried and responded to our initial greeting by lamenting that she had "been on my feet all day." The menu overall seemed overpriced, but we ordered a round of Moscow Mules at a pricey $24. The Thanksgiving menu fixe was $145 each and wasn't terribly inspiring. Based on other reviews we were concerned that quality of the food may not warrant the price. This concern was realized when the drinks arrived in basic softdrink glasses and another server tossed a bunch of fastfood drink straws on the table. We had seen Moscow Mule copper mugs near the bar, but these drinks didn't even have wedge of lime! We sipped them and couldn't barely taste any alcohol. Our apprehension turned into wariness that those reviews suggesting the RTR was riding on its history to deliver a subpar experience we true- so we thanked our server (poor dispirited soul) and left. It's not far off Broadway and my sense is it has become an overpriced tourist trap for those unfortunate undiscerning tourists who know no better. Beware. The management should do a deep rethink - if in fact they care.
