Very disappointing. First, the sushi here is 2x the cost of other sushi places in the area. The Vancouver waterfront is expensive, so we were ok with this but expected decent food for the cost. The fish was ok, but the sushi presentation and assembly was quite poor- the rice was the wrong texture for sushi and fell apart the moment you picked up a piece, the tuna was cut with poor knife skills- the edges were jagged, rather than a smooth piece of fish you'd expect for sushi. Overall I would equate the sushi quality to what you might find in an airport- definitely not a nice dinner out. They had odd wipe-out videos playing in the bar- otherwise the lighting and ambience is nice- just not as nice as the pictures make it out to be on the website. After we were seated, the server didn't come by for a long time- she was chatting with the sushi chef and hostess, and when she did come by she said she didn't realize we were waiting for her. Overall- very mediocre to poor sushi, over priced and inferior knife skills. We won't be back.

I’ve eaten sashimi for most of my life - across hundreds of casual spots and high-end counters, in both the U.S. and Japan. The style and creativity of an itamae (板前) (sushi chef) can vary, but one thing doesn’t: sashimi is a craft built on meticulous preparation and care. Tonight, on a Saturday dinner service, I experienced something I have never encountered before: a bone left in a piece of salmon toro sashimi. To be clear, I understand fish have pin bones. The issue isn’t that bones exist - it’s that a restaurant charging premium prices served sashimi with one still in it. That’s not a “whoops,” it’s a basic quality-control miss and a potential choking hazard. At this level, precision is the minimum standard. The front-of-house staff handled it politely and was receptive when I showed them the bone, and I appreciate that. But what disappointed me most was the complete lack of accountability from the kitchen. No chef came out to acknowledge what happened, inspect the issue, or offer a direct apology - just a small discount through the server. And that’s where this feels especially out of step: Japanese culinary culture isn’t just about the food - it’s about pride in the craft, humility, and ownership when something falls short. If you’re presenting this as an upscale sushi experience, the expectation is not only excellent ingredients, but the level of care and accountability that traditionally comes with it. Tonight missed that mark in a way that’s frankly insulting for a restaurant positioning itself at this caliber.

Very handsome presentation bith plating and staff. Quality ingrediants with minimal fuss. Seating tables are undersized but the room itself is alsi. Deserves an expanded dining area. Currently there are not many options in the Waterfront area. I give them support in the future.

This was our second time at Shin Sen. The first time, we ate at a table in the restaurant area. This time, we sat at the bar. The bar area is small but has a great ambience. They were very busy which is probably why it took a few minutes to get us water and our first drink. After that, everything was wonderful. Our bartender/server was the same as we had at our first time and she was very friendly and talkative - something we really like in a bartender. Husband had the spicy chicken teriyaki (add veggies) and he loved it. I had the Geisha Roll which was good but not as good as the Vancouver Roll I had the first time. Also, had the seaweed salad which was one of the best I've ever had. Highly recommend this place!
