This is our special occasion place. The drinks are creative and the food is great. The service is always exceptional. I wish they had a least one more vegetarian selection for main course though.
I was excited to try this restaurant for the first time. I went with some others who had been before, and they said that this visit was totally different from their first. Overall, we all walked away disappointed. The food was fine, but not worth the price. The service was somewhat slow. We went for a birthday celebration, and the restaurant made no mention of the birthday. The drinks were the highlight of the meal.
We had curry halibut and branzino (bass) entrées, with whipped ricotta as a starter. Everything was OK, but given the posh vibes and prices (about $36 per entree) we had hoped to be blown away. Highlight was probably the halibut, with a flavorful tomato curry sauce. The branzino’s north African- style ratatouille was also quite tasty, though the fish itself a little bit dry. The ricotta was light & fresh but without discernible flavor of lavender or thyme. The server, good looking in the way high-end restos seem to require, could use more training: she asked for our order within minutes of our sitting down, but was inattentive (despite few other diners) when we were clearly looking around & raising eyebrows in search of a second drink before entrees arrived.
(*There were also dismayingly widespread faux pas: delivering drinks with fingers way too close to the rim of the glass where I will be putting my lips; inattention to where I’ve placed my cutlery, which indicates whether I am dining or done; and of course the dreaded “Still working on that?” I’m not WORKING, I’m ENJOYING [or not] a special meal that will cost me half a day’s wage). I have no quibble with $40 entrées if the food is really great, but this wasn’t that. By no means was it terrible, but given the overall value we’re unlikely to return anytime soon.
*These points about the service may sound nitpicky to some, but it’s all information easy obtainable in any guide on dining manners, and which I first came across when I was probably 13 years old. They are not going to turn crappy food good, but they have prompted us to return to a resto and try a few different dishes. That wont happen here.

Even though they were closing at the time we showed up for brunch, we were welcomed and told that there was no rush. We were the last ones there as the staff cleaned up discretely around us, and they never tried to give us our check until we asked for it. We had cocktails, and the bartender was disappointed in how the one turned out so he made it again and gave us the 2nd one at no charge. We both had the mushroom omelette which came beautifully presented with a simple side salad of baby greens. With the lovely views of Oakland around us, it was a near perfect experience. Can't wait to return. Thanks!

Long wait for not having being there during a peak period. Ordered steak and eggs and it was the worst ever eaten and had to send back to the kitchen. Meal comped by GM but nonetheless, wait staff needs to be re-worked and a new chef needs to be on staff to make this concept work, especially during brunch hours.. Hate to write a bad review but it's important that others don't fall for the same trap..

I love the menu and the design of the space however when the bar area is busy, (which obviously is desirable) then the noise level in the restaurant make it really unpleasant and impossible to have any conversation over dinner. This is so unfortunate as the bar is busier at weekends and that’s also when people want to go out for dinner.
So the design of this space is too small to support a restaurant and bar area at maximum capacity and I’ll probably not plan on coming in the evening again.

Prices and variety of foods was very nice. The chef did a good job asking about food allergies and being careful and we appreciated that. My husband's fish entree was cooked well but lacked flavor. Service was very slow and most likely due to Covid and not being fully staffed, however, our server could not have been nicer and was professional. The restaurant is pretty and modern and it was very clean.

The food is very good. The views are fantastic.
Getting our drinks took almost 15 minutes (there were only 5 other guests in the entire restaurant) The server was far too brash and intrusive, frequently and far too casually interrupting our conversation without any regard for the appropriateness of her manner of interaction. It was though she was trained to work at a neighborhood pub or dive bar.
This place could be one of the real gems in town, but the training of the servers and other wait staff leaves a lot to be desired. This was my fifth or sixth visit. Not sure I'll go back.

Inside was entirely too loud, energetic is not the correct term for deafening music.
We would not have stayed if I had to sit inside.
On deck, where we were lucky enough to be seated, as I asked on arrival to be seated there, was better. it would be helpful to have that option when making a reservation, but on the online site that was not a choice

A unique place to have a sunset dinner. Food and drinks were absolutely fantastic.
Excellent spot, good brunch menu, good cocktails and great service. We are looking forward to going back. It is a in a hotel, but but much better than a typical hotel restaurant.

Great for conversation -- quiet but open and airy. Great view of Oakland campus and the sky. Friendly folks from the time we walked into the building & all through dinner. Only little criticism is that our drinks were a little slow to arrive. Dinner choices included some new & interesting options as well as some comfortable ones for the less adventurous. One question: What's the history & context for the name Spirits & Tales? Overall -- Really an excellent, promising new restaurant!

Server was pleasant. Service was VERY slow although few tables were occupied. On one sandwich, bacon was charred. Part of another guest's hamburger was black. The smoked salmon sandwich was DELICIOUS, but a mess: it had to be eaten with a fork because the bread was saturated by the filling. Iced teas were served with very little ice which melted immediately. Request for more ice eventually resulted in one glass with 4 or 5 cubes to be shared by 3 people. No dessert was offered. Maybe it was just one of those late-pandemic days.

I had the BEST experience here. My server Lauren was so sweet and engaging. She made this experience fabulous. I was able to express this to the Food and Beverage Manager Charles. He was also very appreciative. I will 100% be back based on this experience.

Great cocktails, oysters, salads and deserts. Main courses were very substandard for this level of a restaurant. Branzino was incinerated, and the "ratatouille" that accompanied it was mostly cubed sweet potatoes (perhaps squash) very sweet with lots of cinnamon. Not good.

Enjoyed our dinner at S & T last night. After a busy weekend out of town, we drove thru a horrendous storm to find we had no electricity at home. We were able to make a last minute reservation. The predinner cocktails, hit the spot, especially my Black Manhattan.
I had a bowl of rich broth French onion soup and ricotta cheese with honey and toasted Baguette. DH had the Branzino,one of his favorites. He was very pleased. Our waiter, John, was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. He spent time with us and was personable and friendly. We will be back. Thank you for rescuing us.

Excellent ambience, drinks, and food! Would certainly return with a date.
Our waitress did not prioritize us at all. We were seated in a location that she continually passed us, yet we were seemingly not worried about. We have eaten dinner here last year and the food was great. But since we felt slighted, we chose to get an appetizer and go to a different restaurant for dinner. I don’t believe in criticizing wait staff, leaving bad tips, etc., but this experience was very disheartening. I will return for drinks (which are an ok value but taste AMAZING!), but I don’t think I will be eating here any time soon. This makes me sad to just type this.
Just because it’s in a hotel, don’t let that deter you from coming here. Amazing food, drinks, and service! Plus- the view enhances the experience!

Our first time back at Spirits and Tales since the start of the pandemic. Really awesome service. We arrived early., (before properly open) and yet were seated immediately at our favorite table for the view. The food was gorgeous in every way and the frites were amazing. Our server made sure we wanted for nothing and we had such a lovely and memorable time. Definitely going back!
