What Insiders Are Saying
Fancy fine dining, San Francisco style. Bring your elders.
We had an outstanding server.
Absolutely fantastic. Incredible meal with impeccable service.
Spruce has always been one of my favorite restaurants in SF, until this last visit. I was extremely disappointed with the service and unfortunately, I will not return until I hear of significant improvement.
Loved loved loved everything about Spruce. The ambiance was perfect; open; room between tables; attentive service; the crab-filled canalone is to die for.
It was a great place to have a birthday brunch with close friends!
Greeting was terrible. We we're apparently not a priority. When seeing was made final service was improving and what would be expected.
New York was plain. Nothing special.
Salad was excellent..deserts were fine.
Drinks were acceptable.
I would have expected more for the money.
Shhhh....hidden Gem! Don't tell anyone that it's amazing!
Daniel was a spot on server and a choice semolie. Absolute choice service that made the meal.
The service here is AMAZING!!!! The food is consistently fabulous. We love love love love this place.
Service was outstanding, food was excellent. Thank you!
Loved this place! we went for an early Sunday lunch - the food was just fabulous. i had the duck confit benedict (with a GF English muffin) and - omg - was really great. The kids at the next table had the most amazing looking pancakes (seriously I am not joking, they were puffy like freshly basked pita bread). My two buddies both had sides of bacon. I mean bacon, right? Thick, tasty and super hot.
The service is fantastic and the ambience is high end, serene almost. Will definitely be back for dinner some time.
Comida genial, ambiente fantástico, buen servicio .
We were a large party and were crammed into a table by the door. Fortunately the room was warm and we felt no breeze, just waitstaff scooting by constantly. The food was very good, but service was slow. There was a half hour wait between when we sat down and when our order was taken. We had no cocktails. A 2.5 hour meal took 4 hours. We will try again when the holidays are over. Don’t think they deserve a Michelin star.
Food was not hot, too many tables in the dining room results in your chair being constantly bumped, freshness of ingredients were questionable, prices too high considering issues.
Outstanding food and service. Best hamburgers in the City!
The overall ambiance of Spruce is comfortably elegant and understated which appealed to our group. The menu had a wonderful selection of unique choices that addresses most tastes, particularly ours! And it was divine. We enjoyed how it was served as a group, rather than individually, which meant that several servers presented the food concurrently. Nice touch. Unique desserts were beautifully presented on the plate and "garnished" with an extra pour of espresso on the Butternut Squash ice cream - that was an experience! Service was a bit slow, both in getting to our table (odd, since we were almost the first customers) and in taking orders. But all in all, a wonderful experience and we'd definitely recommend and go again.
Wonderful. Great service and a wonderful meal. Loved the fois gras. And the one pairings were really great too.
I was so disappointed with almost every aspect of my dinner at Spruce last night. It was my second time eating at the restaurant and the experience couldn’t have been more different. The first time I sat in the main dining room, this time we were seated in a small, outer room which had nice ambience, however the service was abominable. The slow service started with drinks and didn’t end until I paid the bill. The food was fair at best, and severely overpriced. We ordered the special, a 32oz rib eye, neglected to ask the price and it wasn’t disclosed. When the steak came it had good flavor however it was riddled with inedible gristle. The rest of the food was average at best. The vegetables were forgotten and took 15 minutes to come back; the steak was shown to us and then whisked away to be sliced, which took at least 10 minutes to come
back to the table as our potatoes and vegetables got cold. I was disgusted by this time and simply wanted my bill, which took another 15 minutes. Oh, the cost of the gristly steak? $190 ... none of us in my party will return for another meal.
Christmas Eve- limited fixed price menu that we were not informed about when we booked.
90 minutes between arrival and serving
Overall - a horrible experience
Holiday with family.
For starters, the hosts at the front desk appear genuinely pleased that guests have arrived, with a quick update on the status of the table, followed by information about any delays and an invitation to wait in a quiet area beside the bar. Food is well prepared and beautifully presented, with lunch prices only a dollar or so above that of other far less welcoming restaurants. Wait staff are gracious and handle spills with alacrity and finesse (water glass turnover). The decor of Spruce is understated, harking back to an earlier era of fine dining--lovely setting to be in but not cloyingly Notice Me. All three in our party were as pleased as we could have been, and look forward to a return.
Another memorable dining experience at Spruce in our favorite city to celebrate in. A treat was the potato vichyssoise.. perfectly executed and robustly flavored. Worthy of another visit... as always everything was on spot well prepared and we enjoyed every bite! We’ll be back ...
We have been to Spruce numerous times. That is saying something because we live in Marin and need to come in to the city. We have enjoyed every visit. We even had our daughter's post wedding party by taking over the restaurant for the evening, and they did a wonderful job then.
Each of us had a lovely lunch and would recommend everything including the caviar starter.
We were visiting family in San Francisco, I was born here so I know my restaurants. Well we happened into Spruce and it was so amazing that we cancelled a reservation later in the week to go back.
White and black truffles we in season and added the special touch. Also, the wine list is huge. I mean huge like the now long forgotten phone books of my era
What happened to our dear Spruce?? We weren't seated until 30 minutes past our reservation time, which it's fine to be backed up but not even acknowledged or even a friendly apology? The menu and food also seemed to be a drastic turn from what I remember... which was a memorable flavorful meal I couldn't wait to get more of. It took over two hours to serve one appetizer and an entree.... also ill timed and spaced apart unevenly. For dishes that they charge $40+, I would expect much better service. Sadly not coming back here again.
What a special spot and special food.
Always a special dining experience!
We went for a birthday meal and really enjoyed it. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and the food was really good, especially the braised beef cheeks and the halibut ( a special on the menu). We also had a pre-dinner drink at the bar, and I would recommend the Spruce Goose for a cocktail.
It was a good value for the quality of food
Outstanding food, beautiful surroundings and excellent service. Great for a special occasion.
Very impressive decor. Interesting menu and wine list, patchy quality of food and service.
This is an outstanding establishment in almost every way....
Spruce was an elegant dining experience
In a comfortable but beautiful setting. The food was delicious
and service was professional and helpful.
We enjoyed every moment and every bite.
Wine list is superior. Food excellent. Loved every part.
Perfect - a great setting for a business lunch. Outstanding food, excellent service, and the atmosphere was accommodating for conversation and decision making.
This is absolutely my “go to” restaurant when I want the most perfect experience. So classy.
And you know, I just realized that I didn’t hear a single word from any other table’s conversations (of course I was probably relishing in our own pleasures!). The walls are upholstered in the same mohair fabric as the banquette. Very sound absorbing and beautiful!
The food was fantastic and the ambiance even better!
Fantastic sommelier, attentive service, excellent caviar service.
We felt very unwelcomed! Sometimes you can tell what type of experience you’re going to have by the table to which you’re taken. Although, we were escorted to the only 2 person table in the restaurant, which sat in the dark corner adjacent to the coffee service area, which was only covered by a curtain, and which was fanning back and forth as servers went in and out. I simply asked for a different table and looked forward to a delightful dining experience. However, it was not to be. We sat at the table for close to 20 minutes with no one acknowledging our presence, until I flagged down the Hostess to inquire if there was a Waiter for our table. Someone was there instantly with a lovely smile, but no real explanation for the wait in a restaurant that was not full. Although, full or not there really is no explanation for such an occurrence. At the end of the day, the food was average at best and the experience was very sub-par. Certainly not a place I’d send my friends, family, colleagues, or clients! I usually don’t write reviews, but this was so overt I felt the need to let others know.
