What Insiders Are Saying
Fancy fine dining, San Francisco style. Bring your elders.
Love the burger and ambiance. Great wait staff.
Great experience! Great food great service!
The people who run and work at Spruce are professionals: nothing is left to chance. From the moment you step through the entryway you are treated with a degree of respect that never for a moment feels false or unctuous. The layout is well-designed, with high ceilings, a striking glass-enclosed display case for the alcohol, and a kitchen entrance close to the action but tucked away from the tables.
The wait staff, which for us included the hostess, our waitress, Spruce’s sommelier, a second wine steward, several plating assistants and three or four assorted clearers, bread and water servers, were attentive and friendly without ever intruding. The sommelier took the time to chat with us and to answer our questions, and our waitress somehow managed to be smartly arch but not obnoxious. Everyone came across as real, a welcome departure from the phony, manufactured manner one sometimes encounters.
But enough about the staff — however good they may be, they aren’t the reason you dine at an expensive restaurant like Spruce. What you want to know is, how’s the food? Fortunately, Spruce is superb in that respect as well. I ordered the vichyssoise, which came in two stages. First, an elegant bowl with a few small potatoes at the edge and, in the center, a crisp fried potato ring topped with caviar. Then a soup-pouring specialist added the vichyssoise itself, which was warm with a velvety texture achieved both by really good butter and careful straining. I’ve had good vichyssoise before but never quite like this — I almost cancelled my entree in favor of a second bowl.
Actually, I’m glad I didn’t, because the NY steak and encrusted short rib that followed were almost as good. The steak was done perfectly and was tender and flavorful. It was the short rib, however, that was the true revelation. It was smokey with just a hint of sweetness, and it simply melted in my mouth.
Wine list — many pages, all excellent, but not inexpensive.
Out of space. First-rate!
Food was good but not worth the price. Server was nice but very slow. Entree was served cold.
There before theater and they accomplished something quick and top notch. Martinis and dinner (tortellini app and steak/short rib entree) were perfect and the grapefruit dessert refreshing. Service was incredible and the manager was very attentive. Nehru the waiter was extremely pleasant and professional and really knew his food and wine pairings. We will be back soon!
Our server was excellent! He was extremely personable and knowledgeable.
This is a wonderful place- it’s expensive but the food, service and ambiance was lovely so it was worth the cost!
The staff was a little disorganized because multiple people asked to take my order, asked if I wanted flat or sparkling water but got it wrong, etc. But it got corrected right away and everyone was really really nice, taking the time to explain some of the cocktails and dishes, asking what brought me to SF, etc. The cocktail (greyhound tooth) and food (braised beef cheek tortellini, pistachio crusted duck breast) were EXCELLENT and I only wish I had room to try their dessert menu which looked delicious.
All I can say is elegant dining in beautiful surroundings. The dishes are unique - from very expensive entrees to smaller plates, if that’s your pleasure. From the first step in the door, you are greeted by people who truly seem to want to be there. The food shines!
Everything was impeccable!
Great place for an impromptu brunch date in the City! Restaurant was beautiful, food was fantastic. A little slow to bring us our drinks, thus 4 stars for service. However nice touch with request to take out coats prior to seating us. Will have to return for dinner.
Went in for the Saturday brunch. Great food and good service at a terrific value.
Always a delight to be taken care of by the staff at Spruce. Top notch dining.
Spruce fulfilled all expectations. The service was top notch. They really care about your experience. Waiter was fairly knowledgable about wine. The food was fresh, and dishes were creative. Spruce lives up to its hype.
Wonderful place for lunch. Highly recommend their prix fix menu.
I had the chicken salad and it was delicious! Nice wine selection too! The restaurant decor is beautiful. Wait staff very attentive.
We had a great time at Spruce! It was our second time there and it did not disappoint! Thank you!
We were celebrating the arrival of a new baby who was with us, happily sleeping throughout. The staff was very welcoming and accommodating which was most appreciated.
It was excellent. Staff was very knowledge. Great ambience.
Sat in the lounge area. Didn’t have a reservation but they worked hard to get us a table. Wonderful service, excellent wine list, and wonderful food, but very expensive.
Amazing and fun waiter. Turned a family dinner into an event. Food delicious and beautifully presented.
Great space, excellent atmosphere, excellent simple menu, great wine list, you can’t miss no matter the occasion.
My wife ordered the Harvest prix-fixe lunch with three courses and wine pairings. The appetizer was a Foraged Mushroom Tart made with Taleggio cheese, fresh pea shoots and sherry vinaigrette. It was extremely fresh, light and delicious. I chose the velvety Pumpkin Velouté finished with toasted pepitas and sage crème, which our server poured into the warm bowl before me. Her entree was the Pine Nut Pesto Gnocchi with sauteed scallops. The pesto was creamy and flavorful. The scallops were cooked perfectly…the gnocchi light and airy. It was topped with Grana Padana cheese, which made for a superb blending of flavors and textures. My main was a pastiche of two dozen mussels elegantly arranged on a silver platter, topped with a stack of local Acme Crostini for soaking up the Pernod-infused broth in which they sat. We shared a desert (part of her prix-fixe lunch) called Orange Blossom Tropézienne, a pastry with caramelized pears and apple compote and blueberry cream, whimsically arranged to look like a small burger. Homemade vanilla ice cream with a wedge of candied orange completed the delicious dessert and presentation. Spruce Restaurant served up a superb lunch meal that exceeded our expectations. Impressive was the quality of service, presentation and taste that delivered in all senses!
Exceptional dinner !!!
The service was truly the very best in SF- caring, interesting, present but not intrusive. Food really was not so special to warrant the pricing. I would not choose to go to Spruce again.
Enjoyed the upscale neighborhood feel!
Staff was wonderful. Food very good.
The service was great, the drinks were perfect 🥃, the food was good, but not spectacular, the price was a bit on the expensive side (halibut for $60.00 & the cocktail drinks at $20.00 each)
Unconscionably slow Sunday brunch service though lots of staff apparently bustling about.Odd.
Ate at the bar ... Spruce does not disappoint. EXCELLENT FOOD! Although the "by the glass" wine list could use improvement -
Great food, fabulous service!
The service was impressive! We wanted for nothing. The perfect place to go when you are looking for a delicious meal where you can relax and be taken care of.
This is my go to restaurant when I want our dining experience to be wonderful. The food is always amazing, and everyone makes you feel special.
Great burger from the bar menu for me. Tiny steak entree (2 little pieces) from the main menu. I guess the lesson is stick with the bar menu. Nice ambiance and the service was excellent.
My husband ‚s Birthday. We had the most enjoyable experience. The Food was exceptional and beautifully presented. Service was impeccable.
Thank you for a lovely evening!
Spruce is one of our favorite San Francisco restaurants. Love everything about it. Most recently, we had the duck which was out of this world. We plan on coming back soon.
Food was delicious and dining experience nice and quiet so we could have a relaxed conversation- rare these days in SF. Service was a little slow but very customer focused overall. We will definitely be back.
Having lunch at Spruce is always a treat! It is a lovely restaurant; warm and welcoming decor. The food is delicious with an accompanying, well thought/designed, wine list. The staff is fantastic: you are met by a charming hostess, the wait staff is terrific (Ne Oo is, simply, the best), and the support staff is top notch. We have always had a marvelous lunch at Spruce and will return again, soon.
We had a great time at Spruce. They made sure to take care of my husband for his birthday and they gave us the best recommendations. We had a fantastic dinner and will definitely return.
