What Insiders Are Saying
The Progress, on Fillmore, is a great time and a good scene, with excellent food.
Wonderful food, great service. Only slightly too noisy.
The food was interesting and fun. Great flavors. The service was great. Casual atmosphere.
Terrible - staff and experience don’t support the wine list and prices.
Amazing food and service! Delicious! The quality of the ingredients and flawless execution make the visit worthwhile.
It was a perfect evening! My partner, Perry, and I were celebrating his 50th birthday. We pretty much took all of the recommendations from our server and we loved everything. The Roti, the Duck pate, the squash, the Halibut, and the Pork. We were so full, we didn't order dessert, but a nice light dessert was served up with a candle. It was all in a all a very classy night for a classy guy! It's a beautiful restaurant with wonderful food, quiet enough to have a conversation, but also absolutely wonderful food! Thank you.
Friend is our of town for my birthday.
Everything you want in a restaurant
We went for our wedding anniversary and it was amazing from start to finish. We will be back.
Just fabulous food, wonderful service, everything we wanted. Highly reccomend the Boquerones with flash fried butter beans, the lamb pastrami with fry bread, the charred green bean and plum salad, the harissa lamb, and the desserts. The roasted mushroom egg dish was waterier and duller than I expected. The family style 2-6 person dishes looked interesting but seemed absurdly overpriced.
The Progress is one of our very favorite restaurants in the Bay Area. They contacted us before our reservation to warn us that the Fillmore Jazz Festival would be going on, which helped us avoid a bad parking situation. The Progress' food is creative and generous, and the servers are terrific. We love the ability to have a fine dining experience without any fancy pretentiousness. My single complaint is that the chairs and booths are punishingly hard, and I wish they'd give out little cushions.
The food was "lick the plate" good and the service was wonderful!
Loved the food
Expected more from a Michelin star restaurant. Dishes are served one after the other in a very casual fast-paced style. More in line with a fast-casual restaurant or counter service restaurant. Food is creative with some dishes having more flavor. The pork shoulder and the boquerones were great. The caviar potato cloud was less flavorful and more airy.
Service is a bit too casual. One of our plates was chipped - this should not happen in a restaurant that costs $150 a person.
Very original and delicious! Will go back.
Skip the desserts. Mediocre. The roti was very good.
Fabulous food with sensible size portions! Perfect!
My daughter recommended "The Progress" to me for my birthday because she had a great experience with her friend who planned for her birthday. Overall, it was good, but not as impressive as I expected. The waitress who served us was good. But it was just like any restaurants who serve similar class or price level you go to. However, there had two things, 1st, I was on time for my reservation and standing in front of the reception. The receptionist just finished serving a person and busy looking at her paper. So, I kept waiting until she's available. When she done and raised her head, she looked straight to my back and started talking with the person behind me! And then, she left the podium and led the man to his table without even look at me (yes, the man behind me was taller than me)! I felt like I was invincible because she skipped us. She should at least talk to me before she talked to the person behind. I was watching the empty podium for couple mins. until another lady came to serve me. 2nd, I read review before and one said his table is awful, due to he had to facing (face to face) a lady form other table the whole dinner. I was offered exactly that table. There were 3 or 4 opened tables, but we were not given to those. The table looks like an extra one for busy booking night. And, I looked around and found out that was the only table with the design. Please fix the table because I felt uncomfortable. Good business need extra table, Understand that, until we checked out and see there were a "few" other tables were empty from 6:30 to 8:00pm. My daughter suggested us to reserve that table a month ago!
If this review was based just on food alone, I’d give The Progress 5/5. It was delicious, different, and aesthetically on point. My issue with the dining experience was that we had a 6 PM reservation but didn’t finish our meal until 8:30 because of how long it took to get all of our food! The waiter apologized multiple times, and I recognize that it wasn’t his fault. However, it is unacceptable that the kitchen is so backed up by 6:30 PM that a meal takes 2.5 hours to complete. As much as I appreciated the food, I cannot justify returning after that hangry and frustrating experience.
This was my second time at the Progress, and I would happily return weekly if I lived in San Francisco (and had the money).
Between lovely cocktails (the house martini with smoked castelvetrano juice and rosemary oil; a delightfully fruity strawberry shrub daquiri-esque drink), beautifully prepared vegetables (the super umami summer squash; the spicy broccoli salad), and almost irritatingly good seafood (the anchovies. the anchovies!! get the anchovies!!!), we were totally pleased.
A blueberry, fennel, absinthe, coconut tart ended our meal. Generally I'm not particularly partial to dessert, as I'm sensitive to sugar, but this tiny pie was a lovely balance of fruity and herbaceous. I strongly suggest making The Progress one of your stops whether your live in SF or you're just passing through.
Delicious food, beautiful relaxed decor, and kind, attentive service! We had the caviar, dipping lettuces, anchovies, squid ink pasta, and the lamb platter. We loved all of the dishes. Would highly recommend.
Traveled to San Francisco from the east coast to visit our son. Read about The Progress on several dining sites and booked a table on a Saturday night for a group of 5. Incredible experience start to finish. Love the interior, high ceilings, bar space. Wait staff was so friendly and helpful with suggestions. We shared several plates and each one was as good as the last. One friend is vegetarian and had many options and enjoyed them all. Excellent beer on tap and specialty cocktails. Highly recommend!
We have a monthly supper club that meets up at different restaurants on-par with The Progress. We make these bookings months in advance and use these dinners as our monthly catch up with each other while we enjoy good food and a couple bottles of wine. Upon being seated, we were immediately told when we were expected to leave because of another booking. Not a really awesome way to start. We couldn't even order some dishes because we didn't have enough time for them to cook! Our waiter was totally awesome and was so informative and kind, but, the kitchen was bringing out our dishes so quickly that we literally had no time to plate the first dish before the next was out. Honestly, it was really off putting. Our time to leave came and we were moved to another table, and kindly given dessert on the house while sat at the bar. Come to see that our group of four was rushed and moved for two people. I understand that they are a busy restaurant who just received their Michelin Star, but, the service (minus our awesome waiter!) didn't leave a an awesome impression on any of us. The food was delicious, however, some of it was cold because it was on our table before we could finish the dish before it. This is my first time ever writing something negative about a restaurant we've dined at, but, we weren't happy and I am hoping this gets to someone over there. I, 100% understand that the pressure to move people is high, but, maybe find a more elegant way to expedite that process. Don't make your diners feel like they are on a time limit. Hope to have a better experience with them in the future.
The food at The Progress was so tasty and felt fresh conceptually. I loved that the ingredients were on the menu several times showing you that the team was using what was on hand and local. The wine was delicious and our server knowledgeable and attentive. The space is cosy and beautiful. We had a lovely evening!
I've eaten there a dozen times and loved it. I'm sure I'll try it again, but our dinner was really quite bad and very expensive too. I wouldn't have minded the cost if the food had been on point, but it wasn't. The service was also not good with a long wait to get our order in.
The Progress was outstanding overall. Our server was very helpful with recommendations and conversation. The pace and progression of the dishes were amazing; It felt like choosing your own tasting menu. The tables were a little close to each other for my liking, but I can understand that in San Francisco. I will certainly be coming here again, and I am excited to try their sister restaurant, State Bird Provisions.
Like State Bird Provisions, The Progress knocks it out of the park. Good for almost all occasions. The family style approach is a perfect fit for the menu. Get the duck, it’s a really special dish.
Awesome atmosphere and experience. Fantastic food and service.
Wonderful birthday dinner. Oysters, duck platter for two, pasta and sautéed broccoli were all outstanding dishes. Service could not have been more professional and responsive, and wine recommendation was impeccable. Fabulous meal.
Great ambiance and the cocktails were fantastic! We had a party of six and the dishes to share were a little small for a group that size, but would have been perfect for 2 or 4. Also, the lamb chops were a must have!
Went there for my boyfriend's birthday and had the best time! Probably stayed there for 2.5 hours and could've stayed another hour -- we didn't want to leave! Between the amazing food, the attentive service, and lively atmosphere, it was the perfect spot for a special occasion and we will absolutely be back :)
Excellent meal. Great service. Can’t wait to go back.
Food was delicious, try all of the vegetable options, each was unique and tasty. The big items really need 3+ people to avoid be overwhelmed with one food choice.
Our server — Julia R — was spectacular. She was able to correctly represent the flavors & presentation of each dish. before our order. This was a triumph given the number of menu items we wanted versus limited ourselves to for the evening.
In short, her attributes include articulate, enjoyable, accurate in her representations, . . . all while getting orders, bills, and requests in properly.
Damn good — we’ll be back.
Loved vibe but was hard to hear my colleagues.
Last time I went every dish was wow. This time ...
Some of the dishes were exceptional— the trout, the snap peas. Other dishes were meh — the mushrooms and the asparagus.
Next time I will consult with the waiter before I order like I did during my first visit to make sure I order better.
Very yummy food, but be prepared to pay quite a bit for it.
The food and the servers were excellent... Just don't expect to have a nice evening with your company as they will kick you out after two hours (in as polite a way as possible!)
I've had many fine meals, however my night at The Progress just became my favorite since my dinner at Bouley's in 1994 after I participated in a Patis France Competition in NYC. What these two restaurants have in common is a total experience. From the door opening to the final cocktail, I was mesmerized. The friendly staff, the aroma, the textures and flavors of every dish, not to mention the perfect wines we were ecstatic. An evening like this we will remember for decades to come, that is something special.
We also would like to mention the extra care they gave us when our time was up at our table they so thoughtfully moved us to a booth at the bar for our dessert course. Our hats are off to the entire staff!
We can't wait to return next year:). Congratulations on a truly wonderful restaurant!! We've been spreading the word:). Thank you. Ami
