What Insiders Are Saying
The plates at Al's Place in the Mission look like art, and taste pretty great too. "Best New Restaurant in the US 2015" ain't a bad calling card either.
Beautiful presentation, delicious combinations - loved everything we tasted!
I never thought micro-greens could be so amazing! We ordered from the chef's menu so many dishes to explore and while the presentation was a bit precious, every dish was delicious! I will definitely return.
Didn’t care for the pork belly, should have gone for the steak or the fish mullet
Amazing food an amazing service. Wow. Never since or before have I been excited about a raw radish. They really have amazing veggies (and everything else).
I highly recommend getting the chef's menu with the wine pairing. It's a lot of great food with nice wine.
Only downside is that they play music really loudly inside so it can be hard to hear the people you are dining with.
We came on the early end, and the place filled up quickly! At first we weren't sure what to make of the atmosphere, interesting mix of diners, of all ages and backgrounds, and a funky interior. And it was extremely loud, my ears were vibrating throughout dinner despite management having turn down the volume slightly. That we forgot about all that once the food arrived. Incredible, delicious and creative dishes with an excellent wine list to round out the meal. We tried all three desserts, all amazing!
Had a wonderful dinner at Al’s Place. The food was delicious and the service was very attentive. We did the family dinner(tasting menu)and wine pairing. We received 10 different dishes all were beautiful to look at and tasted great.
too loud, left with a sore throat -- and too expensive
Restaurant didn’t recognize anniversary
The food here is inventive, unexpected and visually beautiful. Everything was delicious and perfectly prepared. We liked the informality of the room and that the menu was designed with sharing food in mind. Music was fun but a little to loud to have a conversation.
Beau décor, bonne musique, excellente nourriture! Un must!
The music was too loud for good conversation to be had at the table. The food was delicious and accommodating to the one person in our party with food restrictions. We enjoyed the fun atmosphere. Staff were great.
I know that this is supposed to be a 5 star Michelin experience. My food was mediocre, the music was so loud I couldn't hear the person next to me, and the tables were way too small for the "family style" plating of the food.
Good and bad are all about expectations, I understand that. My expectations were not in line with the experience I had.
I like the ambiance of the restaurant, really trendy and upbeat. Unfortunately I felt like the flavors weren’t super outstanding or memorable. I had higher expectations for a place with a Michelin star. The place felt cramped. The presentation of the food was alright. They didn’t ask us the cook of the steak, and the seasoning should be on the food not the plate.
I never thought I'd rave about a lettuce. We got the tasting menu, and with that broad sampling of the menu our impression was that while crowd pleasers like the hanger steak were just fine, the astonishment was to be found in the vegetable courses. I think we'll go back and just order veges. The wine pairings were also sensational.
Food was creative, entertaining and delicious. Portions were reasonable too.
Service was great. Prompt, informative with a good sense of humor and lots of style!
We frequent Al’s quite often and every time it is exceptional in every way. Julie rocks!
We loved it
Truly a fantastic food experience
Service was great
Maybe a little too noisy
Very loud in there. Could barely hear them describe the dishes. Loved the good though. The service was amazing as well
Wow, what a fantastic place! Lovely servers, delicious food! We got the set course which is a lovely way to experience non stop deliciousness. It was veggie heavy: with particularly scrumptious warm olives, the hand salad which is on their website, brassicas and burrata and cracked cucumbers. They did offer flexibility of mains- my table mates picked pork belly and I got the salmon in a Tom yum sauce (drinkable!) There were several other items- a grit dish, chawan mushi and lightly cured trout. All delicious! I thought the value was excellent for so many options. AND TLC and 2PaC at a nice volume was a bonus!
Food was very good but portions are TINY and it's quite $$$ considering how much you end up having to order to get a reasonable portion
I liked everything except...
Being rushed off my table. I ordered the tasting menu, it’s 10 courses. The 1st 4-5 items came at once, before I could finish more items came. THEN the check was brought to my table BEFORE I finished eating AND without me asking for it.
Im glad I tried it, but I won’t be back. For $300 I can eat somewhere else and not be pushed out of my table.
For was good, service felt a bit rushed.
Amazing experience. Staff were welcoming and extremely friendly. Service was EXTREMELY perfect; kitchen , server, staff were so well orchestrated it was unbelievable.
Food was beyond words. The cured trout is a must. Brisket was soft and delicious.
The food was amazing, but what was even more notable was how helpful and welcoming the staff was, which I find is sometimes not the case when I’m dining solo.
Good food, interesting taste combinations, small plates. We loved the emphasis on vegetables! Tables are a tad too close together. We are waiting to find out about AL's new deli on 18th.
Well balanced dishes, small but curated wine list, relaxed atmosphere. Service mitigated (depending on the person), very noisy (chatter & acoustics) and draughty (SF style?) 😉
The prix fixe menu is phenomenal
Beautiful food in a wonderful fun setting. A masterclass is quality casual dining.
Overall we were impressed with the food but very underwhelmed with the entire experience. We had an early dinner reservation on a Friday and we walked in and the music was so loud you couldn’t talk to the person sitting next to you or hear the wait staff asking you for water. We did the tasting menu and I’m fine for getting multiple dishes at once but everything felt incredibly rushed, there was no time between courses, and you didn’t get to appreciate the food at all. The vegetables used in all of the dishes were flavorful and incredibly fresh! I just wish they had slowed down a bit and made it a place where you could actually talk to the person sitting across from you without shouting.
Very cute place with friendly staff. Extremely loud. Sounds like you are in a cafeteria at a school. They have very high quality ingredients but should be using them a lot better. Sticking a pile of lettuce on a plate with a toothpaste line of guacamole underneath is not worth my time. The steak was beautiful and the tar tar was delish! Overall value for money was missing completely, nothing was what I would consider memorable when pitted against a ton of other restaurants in SF.
I had been wanting to try Al’s place for a while as I had heard good things but honestly, it was so underwhelming and did not live up to the hype. The food was good, but in my opinion, nothing memorable or worthwhile of having a Michelin Star (or the prices that go along with it). The ambience was just weird. Maybe if they turned down the music and spaced the tables out a bit further as other reviews have suggested, it might make the experience more enjoyable. And the service was even weirder. We asked to see the drink menu to order drinks.. the menu came but no one followed up to actually take our order - so water throughout the whole meal it was! The waitress then gave us our bill while we were still eating, which not surprisingly, made us feel pressured to finish ASAP and leave. Something I wouldn’t have expected a Michelin rated restaurant to do. Ever.
Excellent and creative food and very helpful staff. The music was very loud during the entire meal and everyone was quite loud to be heard.
Great food and great wine. The one complaint is that the music was so loud we could not hear our server nor our friends across the table.
Amazing food and service ! Did the chef's choice menu and was well worth it. Great staff
Really excellent meal at a very reasonable (for SF Michelin restaurants at least) price. Quite loud but a fun ambiance. We ordered 2 snackles, 1 cold item, 2 hot items, and a side, and it was plenty of food for two (it was recommended by server to order 5-6 items). Wine was very nice. Don't miss the stonefruit curry if it's on the menu.
Noisy restaurant. Food was ok. Service was ok. Not a Michelin starred experience in my view.
Loud music made conversation difficult. Asked about non-alcoholic drinks and was told that the only 3 were on the menu. Later saw tea and coffee served for dessert. Why weren’t they available, even iced, for dinner? Negatively impacted my son’s and my experience.
Incredible. Come hungry though, SO MUCH FOOD.
Great food. Flavors were phenomenal. Service was a little inconsistent. Our first server (an offbeat looking guy), seemed to have a little attitude when we had questions about the menu. Also when we started ordering, he abruptly walked away mid order. Seemed annoyed that we had questions and some dietary restrictions. No explanation for walking away. Another server, this time a woman, came by to answer our questions. And she subsequently took our order. She was very pleasant and much better than the first guy who attended to us. A third server (Asian woman), who seemed to take over further into the evening , was a delight. Very sparkling personalty and energetic. It was our first time here. Would come back but would request not to have the first guy serve us.
Amazing experience! Food and service over our expectations
