What Insiders Are Saying
Momotaro is like a Japanese Discovery Zone. You may need to sample the menu a bit, but hit your stride and it's a great meal.
Fantastic food. Sashimi Selection I ordered was delicious and fresh. My husband is not a raw-meat eater, so his safe choices at Japanese restaurants are normally Tempura and Teriyaki, but here he was able to try more varieties such as spaghetti, shishito peppers, wangu sliders, etc. and everything he ordered he liked a lot. We also enjoyed the innovative desserts. Service was fine, just not 100% satisfactory (the first time the waitress recorded Sushi Selection rather than Sashimi) , if some room is still left for improvement. But overall fancy restaurant and great food choices.
The food is spectacular! They were unfortunately out of the Sake our waitress recommended but we got another bottle that was still food. Definitely loved the oyster and the specials they had. Pleasantly surprised with the Japanese BBQ too and the chef’s special Toro with tartare. Need to go back again ASAP
It was perfect. We went there for our anniversary and they made it so special for us. The food was amazing, as was the atmosphere. Best Japanese food we’ve had in America by a mile.
Outstanding food, and really memorable desserts. Much in demand...we got seated half an hour or more after reservation time. Leave time for seating, and for eating...this is leisurely. However, I am always delighted with their food.
This restaurant was a disappointment. The food quality was good - not great by at this price point I expect better. And the service was so so. Our waiter appeared impatient as overburdened with too many patrons to serve. Once we did order it took awhile for the food to arrive.
I was looking forward to the Scallops Mokoyaki, which had received great reviews. It was terrible. The scallops themselves were fine but the sauce was like hot mayo dumped over them. Way too rich. We also had the Nagima Chicken Thighs, which were much too salty. On the other hand, the grilled Shiitaki mushrooms and the Momokaki Tuna Rolls were really good and the Bluefin Tuna Loin was to die for, though the portion was miniscule.
While dining here was an interesting experience it was not one good enough to repeat. There are just too many good and interesting places to eat in Chicago.
Everything was great!
It was really great time :) Good food
The food timing was a little wonky. For somewhere so hyped up and expensive I think our expectations were higher than our experience was. The bathroom was dirty as well. Some of the dishes were meh but others were outstanding!
Learned about Momotaro in a search before a visit to Chicago. It met all of my expectations! Food was extraordinary! Menu and wine list were great. I highly recommend it!
Inviting and warm from start to finish. Great touches like menu with birthday guest's name. Hostess and entire wait staff aware and acknowledged event.
Notes taken were translated into a custom meal by the chef.
Best dinning experience ever.
In from out of town. I would like to make it an annual event
Upstairs was quiet but plain
Food was excellent
Excellent robata yaki from Gene Kato, formerly with Sumi Robata. Highlights include shiitake, uzura (quail), king crab, gyutan (beef tongue), chicken oysters, chicken liver pate. We had 2 cold dishes, tofu and onsen egg, both excellent as well. The matcha mochi cake is great for dessert (all the other desserts are good too).
Only minus from this place is the cocktails - could use improvement there. Food and ambience are excellent overall.
Food absolutely fantastic! Jake provided stellar service and we will definitely be back sometime very soon!
We had the fried rice with beef it was very good. We also ordered the Hamachi cold dish, while the presentation was very pretty, the yellowtail was cut too thick so it was a bit difficult to eat and it could be more favorful. Sushi presentation was very appealing however the rice needed more sushi vinegar to compliment the fish.
a culinary adventure. Simply unforgettable and outstanding. My favorite place in Chicago now!
Sweats are very poor quality and getting worst over the last 12 months. We have dinned with you over 50 times and we are disappointed in your desserts.
Your chocolate cake was your signature dish and you haven’t been able to get anything close to the Momotaro chocolate cake with honeycomb
Your shaved ice dessert was nice and you changes it to melon and lost it’s unique flavours.
Great meal. Great atmosphere. Lamb chops were amazing. Scallops were unreal. Fried rice is a cant miss
I wasn’t happy being seated with my husband in a small room upstairs with 3 tables of large groups. Not exactly the atmosphere I was expecting. These felt like the “bad tables”.
Best Japanese and sushi we have ever had. Ever. Casual vibe and beautiful presentation.
Overall, very disappointed. I had been wanted to try out Momotaro for a while. I went into the dinner knowing it was on the pricey side, however, the food quality did not match up. The miso soup was $9 and it was actually the worst miso soup I've ever had in my life. All the other food, skewers, salmon, sushi, was all just average. Because of the hype surrounding Momotaro, I was expecting it to be just really good food. However, it was nothing to leave your local, average priced sushi restaurant for.
We had a fantastic waiter that helped us through the menu and was lovely to talk with and get to know! Loved the food the first time I enjoyed momotaro and so glad I went back! Everything was delicious!
Very good experience. Our server was helpful in walking us through the menu. The food was great and brought to our table timely manner. Don’t miss the salt water eel nigiri sushi.
My daughter enjoyed the GF options.
Excellent food. Excellent service. Nice variety of small plates. It is pretty expensive but I would certainly return.
—Pasta dish is excellent (probably best thing there)
—Sashimi chef selection was tasty, fish for the most part was fresh, firm
— octopus was rubbery... not good (try sienna tavern or pizzeria Portofino) however chef sent out something else and was removed from our bill
—A5 is no longer served on a hibachi so gets to the table and cools down... not great for beef with such high fat content. This was quite the dish previously but just ok without the hot coals
— otoro , chutoro was very creamy and rich, nice
— uni was nice even though they were out of Hokkaido
— service was excellent
2 hours and 10 minutes to dine on a Wednesday at 6:00.
To me this is the best Sushi restaurant in the City. The omakase here is always excellent and provides a very balanced and exquisite balance of flavors. But, Momotaro is more than sushi, the appetizers are always a lovely blend of rich and refreshing flavors that touch on traditional and modernized Japanese dishes. Also, the cocktail program and sake and whisky selections are divine.
Loved everything from the very beginning. Greeted very friendly and recommended nothing but the best. It made our Anniversary even more special.
Amazing service from our waiter, Jordan. Sushi was fresh and meticulously crafted, with stunning presentation. A great date night!
The experience was amazing!! I put on my reservation that went for birthday celebration and they were all super attentive to that detail! Amazing food, amazing environment.
Momotaro has been on our Chicago bucket list since we moved here and it exceeded expectations! Can’t wait to go back!
It was amazing. I had reserved this place to celebrate my husband's birthday. When we reached, they had a menu card specially made for him with his name on it! It said "Happy Birthday" ... it was such an amazing surprise and he felt so spectacular!
The food was obviously mind blowing! Would definitely visit again!
This was some of the most amazing sushi I have ever had. It was so fresh and innovative. You could really taste the fish versus the places that cover everything up with mayonnaise and cream cheese. We ordered the Negi Hamachi, Momomaki roll, and the Zuke Salmon roll. We also had the shishito peppers to start and ordered the Chacha’s rice bowl. Everything was delicious and we were perfectly full by the end. I would recommend this place to go for a special occasion.
Overall we liked Momotaro, but it’s expensive for what you get. There is an entire section of the menu where you pay $8-12 for a SINGLE piece of sushi...not one roll, only one piece. I also ordered a non-alcoholic cocktail ($10), to be made alcoholic with house gin, which then I got charged an additional $12 for the house gin. One cocktail that cost me $22, when the most expensive drink on the cocktail menu was $15. Granted the drink was delicious, but not worth $22. We got these complimentary matcha cookies at the end for dessert since it took our waiter forever to bring our check and they were honestly probably the best part of our meal. Despite that at the end, our waiter was really nice and answered all our questions about the menu. We didn’t walk away from the meal unhappy, but we probably won’t go back.
They always remember us and our requests. Love this place and eat there often!
the food was delicious, I strongly recommend octopus; ambiance was cozy; it was great experience.
food was amazing. busy atmosphere but service was great.
i spilled red wine all over my brand new Derek Lam 10 Crosby Poplin Dress :(
Best sushi in Chicago. A really authentic experience with exceptional service. Would highly recommend.
Best robata / yakitori in Chicago! Energetic vibe.
