Epicurean Café is locally owned and managed by Chef Omar Powell.
The braised short rib - OMG the sauce was great!! Definitely would order it again! And the restaurant was so cute and quaint - loved the setting! Like being in someone’s home!
I met a friend at the Epicurean Café for lunch on Saturday afternoon. Everything was absolutely wonderful. Such a charming place, the food is all very fresh and local, the cocktails refreshing (loved the Cucumber Basil martini), and the service was personal, attentive but not overbearing. Highly recommend this local gem in a historic home in Downtown Duluth. Parking was not an issue and the charm is quintessential!
We had a wonderful dining experience...everything from our server Todd, to the excellent bottle of Petite Sirah he recommended, the beautiful interior, the absolutely fabulous cuisine of Chef Omar and finished it all off with an incredible rum golden raisin bread pudding. We will be enjoying the experience at Epicurean Cafe often from now on!
Food was delicious! Our server was very helpful and friendly. We did have to wait a little longer than usual for our food, but it all arrived hot & tasty. We’ll be back!
I had the braised ribs, and they were tender and excellent beef flavor (aided by a great red wine reduction sauce). My sides included some of the best "whipped" potatoes I have ever had and a medley of vegetables that could have been blanched a little longer to make them more tender. (but their flavor was great anyway) My wife had the lamb chops which she also loved. (and, unusually for her, there were no leftovers to take home). A suggested pinot noir from Oregon paired perfectly with both dishes. We "splurged" for a little dessert to share - we chose the chocolate torte. Deep, rich and not too sweet, the surprise came when I topped it with their homemade strawberry whipped cream - Killer! The graceful ambience in an old restored home (The Knox House) took me back to some of the fine dining I have had in Savannah. Candlelight and white tablecloths made it elegant in a traditional sort of way. Hostess and waitress was both friendly in a warm way. (Not the automotronic, "I'm robot and I will be your server tonight") She was knowledgeable about the menu (and the wine) and efficient. We also had a house cocktail martini that included cucumber and mint and vodka - quite refreshing. I highly recommend this as a must-go place to dine in the Duluth Area.
It took way too long for our food to come out. The waiter was nice and apologized and offered another glass of wine but it should not have taken 45 min to get our main course. Restaurant was not even busy. Plus the desert portion was very skimpy. Food was good and it’s a real nice place.
My mother in law, husband and I ate there Saturday night. What a lovely setting outside. We thought it might rain but wanted to sit outside. We enjoyed the patio under the tarp just in case! The food was soooo good, the service excellent and the atmosphere charming. We had a wonderful time.
This chef inspired farm to table is housed in a lovely older home. The menu was varied and appealing.
The server was very helpful in describing the concept and the menu items. He also had good knowledge of the wines offered. Each course came out very quickly. We were pleased with the food and the experience. The deck outside would be nice in good weather.
There were 3 of us and we went to celebrate a friends birthday. The server was really nice and very helpful with any questions we might have had or to give us recommendations. The food was delicious, it was not too noisy so you could easily have a conversation. We wished there were more cocktail choices with vodka or tequila, but the cosmos we had were delicious. It is rather pricey so I would say this is someplace you want to go for a special occasion. We had a very enjoyable time and will return.
The food was fresh and delicious!!!! I loved the scallops.
Attentive service, delicious food. We ordered the pork belly appetizer and it melted in our mouths. My husband ordered the pork chop entree which was flavored like a giant piece of gourmet bacon (a good thing!) I ordered the fish special which was cod. It was served in a delicious light sauce and came with seasonal vegetables and a spinach risotto. Everything was so fresh and seasoned/cooked perfectly. Service was present, but not intrusive. It was our first time here and we would definitely come back!
Food was hit and miss. My husband had the short rib...and I mean one small rib...and it was dry.
The shrimp and grits were good.
The truly annoying part was the flying bugs. So hard to enjoy a meal when you are trying to keep stuff away.
The server was nice and friendly. Nothing her fault.
Wouldn’t go back. Not worth the cost.
I would have rather eaten at PURE Taqueria across the way.
My husband of 21 years told me this was the best Fathers Day meal he remembers having. We loved everything about it. Environment, food, service etc
Wife’s birthday. Terrible experience. Poor service, completely inattentive. Bathroom door would not close, toilet clogged. Extremely long wait for food that is over priced. Cod special was terrible. Had to get my own wine list, had to track down another server for my daughters ketchup. Fruit flies were everywhere when my daughters meal came, all over her fruit bowl. 1st and last visit. Terrible experience.
Had been there several times when under old ownership. Would highly recommend. Food was outstanding.
We have enjoyed Epicurean Cafe for dinner many times but this was the first time we have been for lunch. It was delicious! We met friends that we had not seen in several years and our server was very patient with our talking rather than deciding what to order!
Amazing freshness in the food. Valuable hidden gem as far as I'm concerned.
We love the food at Epicurean Cafe. the service, the chef, the owner are all outstanding. The one thing that could be improved upon is hiring a bartender. Currently your waiter is your bartender so sometimes when busy, the drinks take a little too long to receive. It would be nice to be able to get a drink while waiting for your table, but sometimes there is no one available to make you a drink. I think they lose money by not hiring a bartender. But other that one piece of advice, we love it and haven been there 4 or 5 times in the past few months and have also brought friends with us, who also have thoroughly loved the place. Stop by for a fabulous meal, you won't be disappointed.
Lovely meal on the patio!
Amazing cuisine carribean inspired fish and vegetables.
The special was cod with corn and spinach risotto – fabulous! Although we dined inside, spring would’ve been the perfect time to eat outside on the covered porch, while watching children play in the park. A perfectly delightful and delicious evening.
hostess sat us in an empty room when there were tables in the main dining area. Food was decent but not fabulous. Waitress was unpolished and didn’t fit the vibe of the restaurant.
Never disappointed in the food but staff a little off. Service doesn't seem to get this that your job is to make a good impression. Not only waiters but when you walk in the door. We have been numerous times and the ONLY reason we return is the quality of food compared to others in the area.
This was our 5th trip to this restaurant. The 1st 4 times were very enjoyable. We hadn’t been for about a year, and this time it was horrible. A party of six, we arrived on time for our 7:30 Saturday night reservation. The owner/hostess was not out front so after 5 or 6 minutes I wandered back into the restaurant to let her know we had arrived. She seemed harried- a fore warning of things to come!
To cut to the chase, it took 2 hours before we got our 1st course- salads. After another 30 minutes we finally got our entrees, and two of the five (one guy had just cancelled his in frustration) were over-cooked.
During all of this, the owner never stopped by and apologized or explained why things were going so wrong. They never offered a glass of wine or anything while we waited for the kitchen to perform. This in particular we found inexcusable, so we won’t be back we’ll spend our money elsewhere.
This was my second time at this cozy, quaint restaurant. What brought me back was a vivid memory of delicious tomato bisque soup. There was a bit confusion with my appetizer (salad), which was fixed without much fuss. However, we ordered fairly quickly and yet had to wait 1 1/2 hrs for our main course with no refill on water or an apology from our waiter. Simply unacceptable. The food all got thumbs up but the service WAS something to write home about, just wish it could be written in a better light. I would reccomend this place on slow (perhaps weekday) nights only.
Our party of 5 enjoyed our Easter meal at Epicurean this year. We loved the vintage setting (old home) yet enjoyed a very modern cuisine including the okra and beignets! Service was perfect and Gayle was the perfect wait staff member. We will definitely be back when the full menu is offered so we can try other dishes.
We had a great experience! All five of us got different entrees and each was wonderful. I would especially recommend taking advantage of the specials - they had amazing seasonal offerings and plates.
My husband and I met up with a good friend. We wanted a place where we could hear each other talk. We all ended up ordering the special, fried cod with risotto. It was so delicious. We would go back again. The restaurant has great ambiance, having an old home feel to it.
We had a 7:30 dinner reservation. We arrived and were seated at 7:35. We left 20 minutes later after receiving two glasses of water and two menus. That was it. No waiter, no apology, no service (other than the water). So I have no opinion about the food.
Wonderful young staff, good tasting dishes, especially the short ribs. a little heavy on the sauce for some of the dishes, but I noticed that that appears to be more the chef's style. Flavor-wise everything is on point.
The food was amazing. I had the braised short rib, and it was so tender and flavorful! The bread pudding is also out of the world! Loved the service and the ambience as well, all exceptional!
Had a wonderful time! Even when my dish wasn't cooked to my desired temperature, the server and chef went above and beyond to fix it. It left such a positive impact that I will absolutely return. They truly take pride in their food and service.
Excellent. We had seafood special, which was cod superbly prepared. Scallops appetizer and caprese salad. Cocktails were tasty and smooth. Patio dining overlooking town green area was lovely. Very attentive service!
Very enjoyable. Tasty food.
I’ve been here three times for lunch and have always been pleased. The food and service are both excellent. It wasn’t very busy for a Friday which surprised me, but I wasn’t disappointed in my lunchtime experience.
Nice surprise right in the heart of Duluth, GA. A lot of ambiance of an old home. Staff, especially Gayle, our waitress, are pleasant and efficient. I enjoyed the short ribs, which were as Gayle noted, 'spoon soft!' My wife's pogrkchop was outstanding, rich and pink, most tasty. Made for another meal! For dessert we both enjoyed the flourless chocolate torte - excellent. Nice romantic place for a meal. (We tried to take advantage of the City's free Uber rides but were told when it failed that we had the wrong code! What?) Oh well, it was a nice evening. Thanks Gayle!
Food and service were great. Looking forward to going back again.
What a spot! Everything about this place was fantastic, especially the food! Although it was a long drive, we wanted to try something different and we were highly pleased. We'll be back!
Quality of food was outstanding. Able to accommodate special request. Service was great.
We took our guests from Wisconsin out to dinner at Epicurean Cafe to enjoy the newly developed Duluth downtown area at a restaurant in an traditional southern flair. We were delighted with some of the most delighted by a simply superb, creative meal and truly excellent service. We were greeted by name based on our reservation, seated in one of several cozy rooms, each with just a few tables, providing a great environment for conversation. It was our first visit to Epicurean Cafe. Our friends commented on how much they enjoyed the experience and the food. We will definitely be back often. A true delight.
