Juanita & Maude
Juanita & Maude's cozy dining room and bar is the perfect spot for a night out, celebratory occasion and special private events. Conveniently located near the corner of Solano and San Pablo Avenues, Juanita & Maude is the perfect place to eat before a show at the Albany Twin, Ivy Room or simply seeking an exceptional experience.
It was altogether lovely. Patio outside was quiet, inside was very loud. Loved it and will be back, quiet outdoor seating for us!
Killer as always . At the bar with my wife. We are so glad J&M are here
Decided to try this restaurant after seeing it in Check Please, Bay Area. The menu was interesting, not your typical items. I had Jerk Chicken with plantains and it was incredible. The wait staff are well informed and helful. I will definitely return.
Outstanding hospitality; they always make us feel like they are greeting a family member - but not in an overly familiar way. Great food; mashup (in the best possible way) of regional influences is creative, inventive, tasty and beautiful. Always a treat to dine here.
Great spot for the area. Loved the variety of the menu and the unique drinks. We split a first, second and third plate and it was plenty of food.
The salad was so fresh and vibrant with tomatoes that were ripe and sweet and herbs that were vibrant. Nori chips and a Japanese guacamole crisp and delicate. Shrimp ceviche tostadas were simple crisp and each ingredient it’s honest best. The duck breast entree was complex but again so many distinct flavours and each so true. My favourite Bay Area restaurant.
Our local go to place for a date and amazing dinner!
got great reviews on check please and east bay express so i thought i would try it. i thought it was expensive and quality did not match...pate was ok, caesar salad was brown on almost all the pieces of romaine lettuce and dressy was just ok. tagaleni (sp) was ok but had nothing much on it, shrimp tacos were good but super small. panna cotta was delicious and beautifully presented. service was great however it too them about 15 minutes to bring us the bread.
Better than ever .
And that jerk chicken was amazing
Delicious food...the Nori chips and avocado/wasabi dip were amazing!
Everything was wonderful!!! The wait staff and welcome staff were kind, knowledgeable and humorous! Every course was beautiful and delicious!
Wonderful meal, vibrant restaurant, superb service. We had an early reservation, so arrived as the place was coming together, quiet and a bit awkward. By the time we left, a very different place, full, in a rhythm, noisy, fun. Accommodated our special occasion (anniversary) with understated flair, including a bottle of wine left for us as a gift. Warm, friendly service. A fabulous night.
Interesting blend of California cuisine with Japanese, Italian, Mexican all appearing on various menu items. We have been here a number of times, the food is always excellent. Tonight’s service was okay (forgot to fire an entree, felt like we were being sold extra items a few times). Portions seemed smaller than in the past, maybe just wishful thinking - $26 for 1/4 chicken, $34 for mahi mahi filet both decent but not great values. Great neighborhood vibe, leaning toward fine dining prices. We will be back but maybe just for cocktails and bar bites.
Because the food is good and it's a feel-good place, it gets packed almost every night. My recommendation is to make a reservation and come as early as possible. My wife and I had our best restaurant meal of this year there last week.
Love the food/menu selection, the drinks, the service, the ambiance.
Just great - interesting food - but not too "interesting" great service, great value - we'll be back
I was pleasantly surprised as I had heard the restaurant was very noisy and hard to carry on a conversation inside. It wasn't jam packed when we were there, but the moise level was moderate. The food was v. good and the serving size very reasonable. Pricing was also moderate for a restaurant of it's caliber, serving fresh, organic and local food. Craft cocktails looked good, but I didn't have one. We both ordered the taquitos as an appetizer which was v. good, shared a salad which was OK and then had the jerk chicken which was moist and tastly. Overall, we were v happy and would certainly return.
My husband and I love Juanita & Maude--Nick and the waitstaff are always welcoming, and we enjoy both the food and the experience of dining among others who are clearly also enjoying their evening. We appreciate the fact that the menu always has some familiar favorites and some new dishes. On this occasion I enjoyed two dishes I'd not had here before--the shrimp & grits and the jerk chicken--and my rum julius cocktail, which I nursed throughout the meal, paired beautifully with both (the cream in the drink helped counter the heat of the jerk chicken). I appreciated the fact that when asked, the waiter agreed that this would be a good drink pairing. My husband enjoyed both his chicken liver pate and New York steak, and he ate every bite of the cherry tart he ordered for dessert.
the food was awesome but for me and my family the dessert were the highlight of our dinner
One of our favorite places. This time some of the dishes were over-salted. But this was an anomaly.
Service excellent... food very good small portions well presented
Unable to hear person across table at times
It is extremely rare that I go to a restaurant and I really want to try almost everything on the menu, but that's what happened at Juanita & Maude. Started with the enormous olives and the chicken liver pate, both of which were excellent. The olives really are so big it's like eating an oversized cherry. And they were less "briny" than smaller olives.
My companion had the jerk chicken and I had Mahi-Mahi with green papaya and squid salad. The squid were tiny and so tender. The fish was perfect. And I had a bit more than my share of the flavorful jerk chicken. Not sure how they did it, but the jerk flavor permeated the meat all the way through.
I don't live in the Bay Area anymore, but am there quite frequently. I plan to return to Juanita & Maude and have recommended it to my friends in the area.
Excellent food and service! It is a very busy place, but well worth dining in.
Excellwnt food. Our server, Oliver. Was professional, and knowledgeable without being stuffy. I will definitely go back.
We have eaten there a few times now and each time it’s amazing.
Sat in the patio
Nice and quiet
Was hopping busy inside
Nice space in the covered backyard
I think I already gave this dining experience a great review. The only negative was I told them we were celebrating two birthdays and there was no celebration. Not a big deal. Its a great restaurant and not noisy if you sit outside. I loved the chicken tostadas with bean puree.
I had the hamburger and it was amazing everything from the bun to the pickles to the meat
Great snacks at the bar late evening. Was perfect
Service was great. Friendly and accommodating. Food was excellent. A few of the dishes were truly superb. A bit noisy for my taste but not too bad.
I thought the food was pretty good. There were some items that we did not enjoy (such as the olives and the Spaghetti) but others that we really liked, such as the jerk chicken, Ahi tuna carpaccio and shrimp and grits.
From an ambiance standpoint, I understand the trend of minimalism but this place really kind of took it to far- I was staring at a twig on the wall most of the night - I wish they painted or did something to give people something to look at. There is an outdoor area in the back that seemed a bit warmer - maybe Ill request that area next time.
Overall Ill definitely come back.
Exquisite meal, service, and ambiance. Everything cooked to perfection, great flavor combinations, varied choices. Wine was fantastic and affordable too!
4 people and three did not like entrees. Have been there 6 times and always liked it before.
Jerked chicken had strange dense texture and not much flavor, likewise coconut rice and the beans. Liked the caesar salad. Dessert ho hm. Sorry about this as had always felt place could be relied on for better than average food.
Excellent food as always! Only complaint is that no one , and I mean no one acknowledged our presence as we stood waiting for the maitre d to appear. The bar tender was 5 feet away and never once looked at us with even a nod. The servers ignored us as if we were invisible. But as I stated the food was amazing. It’s a small space and the noise level is high.
Frequently like to try restaurants that are new to me; many times disappointed. This was fantastic and can’t wait to return to sit in the back patio. Started with excellent service, help picking a wine which was excellent. Loved the taquito starter and the Caesar salad (both shared with my companion). My pork sausage with it’s sides was very tasty and friend’s steak was melt in your mouth. Bread was good with it’s special butter. No room for dessert. Space very attractive with nice amount of room between tables.
This is my favorite new restaurant. So wonderful Delicious food. Excellent service.
So lovely to eat on the patio and the service is so friendly and the knowledgeable server such a treat!
We brought family from out of town and they couldn’t stop raving about every dish. One family from Missouri claimed it was the best fried chicken they’d ever had. I particularly loved the Tuna carpaccio. Service was amazing. We sat outside on the patio and it was so warm and festive. Bringing a big group is fun because you get to order everything. Definitely share dishes and explore the whole menu. And don’t skip dessert!
I just wrotea review, but the robot lost it. Dinner at J$M was forgettable except for the price.
Chez Panisse wannrbe
A great find! Tried several things off the menu and shared with four people. Highly recommend because its hard to make a choice! Everything is so good!
