$31 to $50
West Bank
About the restaurant

Bayou des Familles, a lazy waterway home to many alligators, turtles, egrets and other wildlife, takes center stage as our restaurant’s design provides its diners with a natural picture show. It’s in this unique setting where friends and family unite to experience southern Louisiana charm and culture in its finest form. It’s an experience not to be soon forgotten.

The 15-mile drive from downtown New Orleans will take you through the Jean Lafitte National Park. You’ll arrive at Restaurant des Familles and park under moss-filled century-old oak trees. The restaurant’s Acadian-style architecture provides a glimpse of bayou life that once was.

Our menu features authentic representations of Cajun and Creole favorites such as Crawfish Etouffée, Seafood & Okra Gumbo, Seafood Platters and Turtle Soup. Our signature dish, Alligator Stuffed Mushrooms with Alligator Sauce Piquant, will tempt even the most timid diner.

We look forward to your visit.

So thrilled to finally try Saj and annoyed I did not get here sooner. Best meal I have had in a long time, everything was fresh and delicious, the server was delightful, the atmosphere relaxed and cheerful. Cannot wait to return in the coming days.
A photo of The Red Maple Restaurant restaurant
4.8 (32)
$31 to $50
About the restaurant
The Red Maple was originally owned and operated by the Trauth Family, a German-American family of restaurateurs spanning 100 years in Gretna. And what began in 1963 continues to this day, holding to its German roots through its rustic Alpine lodge decor, extensive beer selection and annual Oktoberfest celebration. In fact, it was a red maple tree in the side yard that inspired the name of the bar – The Red Maple – with the restaurant being added in 1965.

Now for over 50 years, The Red Maple has been the rendezvous spot for West Bank movers and shakers known for its Prime cut steaks, New Orleans favorites and fresh Louisiana seafood.

Today, under the passionate guidance of Proprietor Brent Trauth and his sister, Carroll Gales, The Red Maple continues to deliver on its reputation for delicious food, exceptional service and rich Louisiana history. A rich and storied past that is only upstaged by the dining experience itself.

One of the best happy hour menu and hours (4:30-6:30) in the city. We could have made a meal out of the happy hour snacks but sure glad we didn't because dinner was amazing. We started with the spicy wontons, fried calamari, fried pot stickers, the crispy spring rolls and the papaya salad...all from the happy hour menu and delicious (we ordered another round of the calamari and pot sticker they were so good). Dinner dishes were The Green Curry, Spicy Chili Garlic Crab Noodles, Good Catch Fried Rice, Pad Krapow as mains and all are worth going back for! All of our adult beverages were great and served in lovely glasses. If you have been here yet, I highly suggest putting it on the list.

This is truly a beautiful restaurant, and the menu is fabulous. The noise levels were a bit high for a lunchtime business atmosphere. Being in the middle of the central business district, the music should be lower so people can conduct conversations relating to business. The service team was professional and polite, but they were definitely in the weeds.

we were in the Westbank and looking for a place to try and noticed legacy kitchens steak and chop so decided to check it out. we started off with the spinach dip - the dip was good but the chips were amazing! some of the best chips that we’ve tried in the city. we then got a cheeseburger, seafood platter and mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. the mashed potatoes were decent, the teriyaki sauce on the sprouts was really good, the burger was cooked well and had good flavor, and the seafood had big seafood and plenty of it. overall good flavor and good portion size ambiance of the restaurant was nice and service was good. overall a good experience
