What Insiders Are Saying
Fine dining that doesn't take itself too seriously. Sons & Daughters is definitely our speed.
I was there to celebrate a birthday. Not impressed with service.
Most definitely one of the best deals for fine dining in the city. The experience from start to finish was wonderful thanks to the attentive, friendly and warm staff. The tasting menu was diverse, creative and (of course!) tasty. S&D took care in making sure the reservation went perfectly. I was contacted by text on two occasions to confirm the date and time, as well as the names and spellings of the guests in my party (they put this on the menu). Thanks S&D for being a nob hill gem!
The reason this place had same day reservations available on a Saturday is because it's bad. Worst michelin star meal I've ever had. Every dish was super salty, many inedibly so. Lobster canneloni made with wonder bread and drowned in a way too peppery coconut cream sauce that managed to be too salty at the same time? A shockingly terrible dish of soggy, muddy beet-braised greens on top of fried boquerones and buried under what I can only guess/hope was sumac? An amateurish deconstructed pineapple dessert? Who comes up with this nonsense? Complete waste of money. The only redemming point of the meal was the wine pairing and the house made bread.
We had 8 cous
Maybe restaurants at this price point upcharge regularly without communicating the difference in cost, but we thought it was poor service to raise the bill over 100 dollars without discussing the options with us first. I understand that when serving people with bottomless wallets it can be passé to discuss the cost of upgrades, but we don’t fall in that category, and didn’t budget for the extreme price increase. We were very much looking forward to our experience dining with you, but unfortunately will never be back.
One Michelin star restaurant trying very hard to become a two Michelin star restaurant.
- Service was impeccable - warm, but still very professional. Definitely a highlight!
- Wine pairing was excellent - very unique wines that were thoughtfully paired with the dishes.
- Food was unfortunately kind of a mixed bag - a lot of dishes were unbalanced in some way. I think they are really trying to go for strong, unique/unexpected flavor combinations. Sometimes it comes together wonderfully (roasted sweet potato with buttermilk with the Riesling wine pairing is magic! juniper and bay laurel ice cream with roasted pineapple is a powerful mix of very sweet and herbacious and creamy that works really well), but sometimes it is overpowering (overly salty canneloni, very odd and unpleasant mix of burnt/charred and fishy flavors with the chicory and bouquerones)
- Bread and butter was incredible - can they open a bakery and sell their breads?
Amazing, celebration for my moms birthday!
INCREDIBLE experience if you have a million dollars. Or a gift certificate ;)
Wonderful food and a memorable experience. Great atmosphere and extremely knowledgeable and attentive staff.
I could go on and on about it, but this place is for people who love uniquely prepared food and have the money to spend. If you fit those two criteria, then go and enjoy!
Food was excellent. Very creative and beautiful presentation. We loved it!
We had one fantastic experience!
We loved the experience and the attention to detail. I had the wine pairing with dinner and it did not disappoint. All plates were amazing. Truly enjoyed the service and the detailed menu at the end. We will definitely return.
Food was delicious. Staff was well versed and impecable.
Service was excellent. Some dishes were too salty. The cannelloni I would have preferred to be unfried. Overall, pleasant experience.
Amazing food and wine. Highly recommend.
Great choice for my fiancé’s birthday! They texted us 45min before to let us know our table was going to be ready 15min later than our reserved time and recommended places to have a drink while we wait. Service was great overall - all the staff acknowledged his birthday. Food was excellent. They didn’t tell us how many courses to expect which would’ve been nice but everything was fresh, delicious and had nice presentation. Flow of food came out well too. We were full by the end. Great value - would recommend!
Great restaurant, amazing food and wine choices as pairings!
Really good. Worth a trip for a special occasion. Excellent wine pairings.
The restaurant is a great value for the quality of food in comparison to other fine dining restaurants, the restaurant is above the one Michelin star level without a doubt they probably deserve two.
The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, my wife is gluten-free they beyond accommodated her hours sheet with substitutions when so many restaurants just omit items from the menu
The food was presented beautifully and the staff was so attentive and professional. This experience was a special occasion in itself.
Fantastic experience, people at Sons and Daughters made our evening very memorable and created a custom 100% vegetarian menu just for us! Highly recommend.
Have been to a few one-star restaurants around the city and Napa. This was a very approachable but triumphant tasting menu with fun and interesting wine pairings. The caviar and sparkling wine pairing was a hit!
Extremely disappointing and over priced
Outstanding food, wine pairing, overall experience. Would recommend for special occasion.
We were a party of 4. The tasting menu was very creative, using interesting ingredients.
1) French sturgeon caviar with butter glazed sunchokes and Brut champagne as the wine pairing.
2) Tartare of beef with smoked egg, matsutake mushrooms and local seaweeds.
3) Grilled Monterey Bay squid with fennel and persimmon mole.
We all agreed on the attention to detail and the variety of flavors and textures.
Two people had the wine pairing. The wines were AMAZING!!!!.
The butter was to die for. Oh! so fresh......
A Wonderful Experience.
Plan to return.
I travel to SF once a year and for the past 5-6 years my first dinner is Sons & Daughters because it’s always a warm welcome - like dinner at a close friend’s home - and incredible courses and wine pairings.
This visit was no exception. There were five of us and we all left thrilled. The friendly, engaging evening began a few days before the reservation, with a text confirming and asking if this was a special occasion and for the names of guests and inquiring about food allergies. So much better than a phone call.
The evening of dinner, the five of us arrived in two groups and all were early. Since our table wasn’t ready, they suggested a drink a few doors down, which was perfect. They texted when our table was ready - exactly at our reservation time. Our hostess introduced herself as the person who had texted me, and she in turn introduced our server.
Every course was explained carefully and each wine pairing was equally described with the “why” it was paired with the food being served. All delicious.
Our evening ended about 2 hours after arriving. We were never rushed, even though we were the last to depart. Our parting gift was a lovely menu with all courses and wine pairings, personalized with each guest’s name. A nice keepsake.
I can’t wait until my next visit.
Amazing food, amazing service!
It is expensive but totally worth it! My fiancé and I went to celebrate our engagement and went all out with the wine pairings and extra caviar course. I don’t regret any decision, it was amazing! The best meal we have had in San Francisco!
Love the experience and the food/wine pairing. Service was spectacular.
A lovely experience for a special occasion. Impeccable service. Exquisite food. Cozy and romantic ambiance. They serve a 7 course pre fixe menu with an optional add on for wine or an additional course. We opted for the 7 courses. The meal was a steady relaxed pace of one delight after another and it was perfectly planned. Each course got progressively better than the last all throughout, starting with the tomato ricotta tart. The pumpkin mole made me want to lick that plate clean. I'm still dreaming about the duck confit sliders with housemade parker house rolls. And the TOAST. Oh! And they churn their own butter. Let's hope their butter churner never stops churning because that's a gift to keep sharing with the world. I was tempted to take that in a to-go box. Just the butter. If you're concerned about the amount of food - it was more than enough. My husband had to roll me outta there. So romantic! All the servers and staff were knowledgeable about what was being served, how it was prepared, where it comes from. They even remembered what food allergies I had and made sure to address that when we arrived. This is a fantastic restaurant!
Not worth the money. Service was phenomenal, but the food was below average. The food had many technical mistakes, and a sense of carelessness.
- foie gra mousse was gross with soggy and wet oat biscuit under; pumpkin garnishes were over acidic
- the beef tartare was cut over a day ago— either that or it was stored improperly, from all the oxidized sides.
- squid was way too salty
- snapper had too many scales left on the skin
- the duck confit served with parkerhouse rolls.. how the hell are u suppose to eat that?!
- the duck breasts were tough, had too many sinew running across it; the bed of leek-onion soubise was a disgusting mound of oil.
Worse of all, i realized they left out our canape in the beginning when i saw other tables receiving their canape. They made it up when i pointed it out, by packing our missing canapes to-go after the meal.
For a one Michelin star it was okay - not spectacular. Probably worth another shot.
Phenomenal food and service. The beef tartare was the best I ever had. The wine pairings were perfect matches with the food. Overall, the price is a bit steep, but great experience nonetheless.
Unfortunately the inconsistencies and simplicity of the food made it hard to rate the food highly. My partner and I had a layered foie gras dish where the layers varied widely between our two plates. The squid was uncleaned and the duck was not rendered correctly to the point I could not eat mine. When the waiter was told about the inconsistencies my partner was brought a new dish to match mine. A credit was applied to the bill for the squid however uncleaned squid is a massive deterrence. When I questioned the duck they said it is the cooking style as they use a Japanese hot grill. This is an incorrect way to cook duck properly but I did not ask the dish to be redone as it can take up to 15 minutes for the fat to render properly. The flavors were nice on some dishes and unbalanced on others. I had expected more so was disappointed especially considering I had eaten at NoMad in New York a few days earlier. It is another 1 Michelin star restaurant but far surpassed Sons & Daughters in consistency, service, food and drink quality. The service was outstanding.
Really wonderful experience dining here! Incredible food, fabulous wine pairing and unpretentious. We came for a special occasion (a friends birthday) and there were very accommodating for celiac. Not too quiet or sterile, the staff were incredible and the food was absolutely delicious. Definitely recommend 100% !!!
Best meal I’ve ever had - what more needs to be said.
Very nice, small and quaint restaurant, with very friendly staff; however, food doesn't justify the level of sophistication they aspire to (or cost of dining). I enjoyed our meal a lot, there wasn't though anything that goes above and beyond; Meals that we had, are just a tiny notch above what I have eaten in a nice farm-to-table places. In a place like this you would expect to be surprised and challenged, instead we were offered series of very nice small meals.
Interesting and beautiful menu options. Each course is artfully created and stunning. Great service from Juliana and the sommelier both of whom were thoughtful and pleasant. Given the quality of the ingredients it surprised us that we kept talking about the crunchy, tasty sourdough and light sweet parker house roll although the tartare and snapper were pretty fabulous, too. Unfortunately there was just too much salt for our taste. Banquettes comfortable, not so much the chairs. Very pricey.
A bit disappointing given the reviews. Food was mediocre and flavors were not particularly appealing, most of the dishes had a strong sour note. Overall found the quality to be poor value for the price of the tasting menu ($145). Would not return.
Incredible experience! My girlfriend and I were coming to San Francisco to visit family and did tons of research on dining options. We read several great articles on S&D and had to try it. Everything lived up to our expectations. Thanks for everything S&D team! We will definitely be back!
