Tar & Roses
With our heart beating in Southern California, we want to create a welcoming ambiance for all to come and celebrate food. Jonathan Gold of the Los Angeles Times, claimed that Tar & Roses "...may also mark the first time in our nation's history when cauliflower became more delicious than prime steak," and we love to push the limits when it comes to traditional ideas of food. With our rotating selection of local craft beer and our ever-changing menu, there is always something new and exciting to try.
When you step into Tar & Roses, you'll feel like you are coming home. We invite you to come share a meal with us.
What Insiders Are Saying
Tar and Roses exudes a classy calmness not often seen in this part of town.
Visiting from San Francisco for a weekend and read about T&R. We shared a variety of dishes starting with the yellowtail crudo and oxtail dumplings. The crudo was delicious - fresh, tart and bright with citrus, avocado and red pepper. The dumplings were juicy and flavorful. Next up were fried artichokes and roasted garlic drizzled with harissa yogurt—better than French fries! And spreading the garlic on a side of grilled bread was our inventive whim. The ribs were savory and would have fallen off the bone if they had any—not sure what the fried basil brought to the dish except color. The branzino with lemon risotto was amazing—and went really well with the mushrooms with a soft egg on top. The strawberry tart with honeycomb gelato was a grand finale to a wonderful meal. Our waiter was helpful and attentive. The only downside was the volume of noise and the tight spacing between tables.
Experience was great, just didn’t like the fish and no cocktails which we wish we had
Really love Tar & Roses. This restaurant is run beautifully, and the dishes are top notch, eclectic, artistic. To sit by the kitchen is to witness poetry in motion, and is just as memorable as the dishes themselves, which are prepared beautifully. The servers who take a moment to describe new dishes + wine pairing recommendations truly make all the difference. Such a lovely dreamy spot when the service aligns with the overall experience.
Visiting from out of town. Food was delicious! Service and attention to detail awesome. Definitely recommend. Fun restaurant!
The food was amazing. Each small plate had flavor, texture, and crunch. The chef put much thought into every aspect of every plate. The service was amazing and the atmosphere was beautiful. We were seated in the back room which was quieter and had more room between tables.
This was our first experience with this restaurant. We were celebrating our anniversary. The front of the house was very accommodating in trying to meet our special request of having side by side seating during a very busy evening. The menu is varied and interesting. The tapas style items are 'in the range' from a price point-of-view for excellent cuisine. The service level was great. Today, too many American restaurants think that the faster the service, the better the experience. WRONG. Tar & Roses understands that individual items need to be served as complementary items, with a reasonable time to consume the items, and a short break between courses to savor them. No plates getting cold at the table. Very knowledgeable on each of the menu items. Very attentive to the 'little things' that make a dining experience memorable. Good work Tar & Roses. We'll be back (if we can ever get a reservation). :)
One of the tricks on shared plates restaurants is finding the right balance and number of choices to satisfy a group’s tastes. Our server Jeffrey did a great job guiding us and pretty much everything was good to great. Best dishes were their famous popcorn with chilies and bacon, mushroom toast, roast cauliflower and fried artichokes. Branzino was excellent and cheesy potatoes insane. Sticky toffee pudding is a must for dessert. Ask for back room (patio) if you want to have a conversation
Absolute great place to take a girl on a date. We had an amazing time. The staff was very helpful in recommending wine and food. Absolutely worth the price. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a fun night out, in a nice and unique place, with extremely helpful staff.
We had a wonderful experience. The food, service, a d atmosphere were all above our already high expectations. We look forward to coming back again!
Absolutely. The best. We love it every time we dine here.
This is a great restaurant, innovative menu, terrific service and inviting ambiance. The dining room can be noisy so if you have a hard time hearing ask to sit on the patio. Thumbs up.
Wow ... every bite delicious was a great experience , amazing service...will definitely return
Great experience. Our waiter John was very knowledgeable and matched up the food and wine perfectly. It was a very enjoyable experience. Our reservation was at 5:45 and we sat at the front table. The sun was in my eyes for about 15-20 minutes, that was the only little thing that happened otherwise all was terrific.
Great food. Great service. I enjoyed the small plate. Lots of innovative dishes
This is one of the best west side restaurants hands down. Every dish superb! The service was outstanding. If I could afford to eat there more often I would.
Do yourself a favor and book it ahead of time since it’s hard to get reservations on the same week.
Outstanding food, attractive presentation and very attentive and friendly service. Outside patio is the best ambience and much quieter than the main restaurant
The food here is incredible. MUST try oxtail dumplings (I would eat a whole meal of just this). The octopus and shellfish pots were standouts as well. Great, super friendly and energetic service and nice ambiance inside. Love this place
I could eat those oxtail dumplings for days and ahhhh snap the snapper for two is delicious
Food and service was excellent.
Simply - my favorite restaurant in LA. 15 meals here and I have never been dissatisfied. Andrew is a genius.
Amazing food, attentive and friendly staff, low light ... perfect for a special occasion or romantic date.
We had an exception meal with
Extraordinary service. The duck was perfection. The octopus was tender and flavorful. Lucia was wonderful and both Andrew and Johnny stopped by to check on us. 5 stars ++
Outstanding food and service!
Food exceeded my expectations. Will definitely be back. Servers were outstanding!
All 10 dishes we tried were tasty and from quality good ingredients. Will definitely be back.
Innovative food and attentive service in a trendy environment. Very enjoyable.
My husband and I had a lovely date night at Tar & Roses on Friday. Our server, Brad, was great - very helpful and knowledgable. We had the octopus skewers, 24 oz. ribeye and the trumpet mushrooms - the perfect amount of food and all very delicious.
It is not a quiet place, but we knew that having been there before, but it's not completely roaring.
We will definitely be back!
Waiter totally messed up with my food allergies and brought me food I was allergic to but I caught it in time, luckily. They did a good job making it up to me.
Great place highly recommend and enjoyed.
Literally the best restaurant we have ever been too, food was outstanding - please open a branch in the U.K so we can visit regularly!!
Love this place. The food was good and the service was great.
We were seated in the worst place in the restaurant, next to the kitchen and bathrooms. Must have gotten hit 10 times by people walking back and forth. And felt as if they were rushing us through the entire meal to turn the table. The food was quite good, but we went there specifically to celebrate my twin daughter’s 17 bday, and there was nothing special about it. I would return to try the food again, but not for a special occasion.
We visited Santa Monica for only a few days. Based on reviews I made reservations well in advance for Tar & Roses. NOW I'm so disappointed I just didn't eat there both nights. PERFECT small dishes - the menu is so creative you WANT to try many things - and the small dish makes this work.
Delicious food, good Barolo by the glass and the service was attentive. I definitely recommend this place. A mixture of cuisines. We loved the bao, the Singapore crab cake and the Venison loin.
Birthday meal was exactly what we wanted. Everything was done impeccably well.
Still a winner! It had been awhile since my last visit, but this restaurant remains one of the best in Santa Monica. Good was delicious and the service good. The one downside is the noise level, very loud.
Excellent food but portions are small
I asked to have our wine served with dinner. Easy peasy, right? Nope. Waitress brought it 30 minutes before food came. Ugh.
I love tar and roses for a date night or dinner with friends. The tapas style splitting is fun and food is delicious!
Always a pleasure to dine here. It has become our go to place for Easter Dinner
