The place is very noisy but that can be fun.
However, the food is terrible with tasteless fish and overcooked rice (how hard can that be?).
The service was even worse and we had to cancel drinks orders that never came.
This was your recommendation!!! Poor choice!!!
Great food and energy. Good date night spot with well crafted cocktails.
Good mix of a small bar and small restaurant. Good food. Bar is a little too crowded for Saturday night however
When I booked only the table for 4 was available but it was 5 of us so I booked it and called and asked for a chair to be placed extra, it wasn’t so I have asked and was denied it which meant we were seating cramped on the sofa. It wasn’t fully booked so I don’t understand why they wanted to keep the chair away from us in case someone would walk in, our table spent a lot of money. The food was lovely, I would recommend.
A bit too noisy for my taste. The sushi is good but nothing special.
Amazing sushi, really good selection of dishes and a great atmosphere, definitely a great option for a lively Friday night!
Best sushi we ever had
Our dinner was among the two or three most memorable meals of our life.
The quality of the food, the taste pairing shows an excellent works behind the menu.
The wine list is vast, and the prices are honest especially for the wines by glass.highly recommended.
I used to go to UKai in Bayswater and loved it before they closed it down. The portobello branch is good, quality of food is good but music is too loud for having a Japanese dinner..felt like it didn’t quite fir. The food was great and the fish was fresh however the menu was limited, there is no shrimp sushi amongst others... the selection is very small
The place is beautiful and the food is good, maybe a bit overpriced.
What was really bad was the noise level. The music selection was good (DJ was playing) but it was ridiculously loud. I had to shout in order to talk with my partner. That is just not what you expect from a Friday night dinner.
It is ok if you want to have several pints and discuss the last football match but definitely not recommended for a relaxed and romantic Japanese experience.
It would be sad if they could not fix this in the future. There are plenty of sushi restaurants and the competition is high.
We enjoyed
We enjoyed every dish we had.The delicious startes left us really impressed. The unique black cod miso and the octopus ends our meal with a classy touch.
We had a citrus and chilled sake after meal.Nice atmosphere with cool and trendy music.it was a perfect experience, I was very delighted to write this review. It’s a must go in Notting Hill.Foodie approved.
We went to Ukai for dinner this evening. All the reviews were so good that we had high expectations. Unfortunately we must have been very unlucky. This was probably one of the worst meals we’ve had in a while. The rice was stale and the fish was soggy and tasted old and freshly defrosted. It had clearly been in the freezer for some time and was falling apart. To top it off, there was no soap in the loos. Hopefully this was a one-off.
The food and drink were simply exceptional. Some of the best softshell crab I have eaten anywhere. The Friday night ambience with the DJ in the bar section made for a laid back dinner which was perfect. I cannoy recommend this place highly enough.
Cool room and vibe. Great staff!
Too noisy but nice food
We came to the restaurant last week, the place was busy, but we had a very good experience. The food was amazing, very interesting menu, the sushi rice was just perfect. We had also few cocktails from the nice drinks menu.
Thoroughly recommended
The food is to die for, especially the seafood carpaccio, the black cod miso and the hamachi roll.We had 6/7 courses to share. The bill was honest for the high quality of the food.I really suggest to try the Japanese colada from the cocktail bar
Music is unnecessarily too loud. Food is ok but overpriced, the former setting of UKAI on the other side of Portobello Road was much nicer.
Main meal was forgotten and took over 40 minutes to arrive. We were never asked for drinks after the first round. It felt like speakers from the DJ were placed directly above our head making any conversation difficult. The portion size for the price was ridiculously small and not worth it.
Overall food was good but Our grilled salmon arrived like 25 mins late!
Notting Hills finest bar restaurant!
The restaurant is part of a bar/pub that sometimes plays live music. On my visit it was very loud so not the best place for a sit down meal. Staff very nice and we moved tables towards the back. Food decent and fairly priced. I’d recommend for a lunch with a few friends
Very impressed with the service and the food was delicious.
Brilliant service, delicious food, and a great reunion afternoon for a group of girls!
Nice food, really fresh sea food. Very nice people
Ukai is always fantastic! Food is just perfect and the vibe is very cool!
Aware the Notting Hill Carnival had been on during the day, but booked a table for a meal. On arrival it had been turned into a tiki bar, no tables were available despite booking, and we were advised if we wanted food we should go around the corner to see the chef, but it was standing from only. They should not have accepted bookings, or they should at least have warned it would not be a restaurant that night. We had to go somewhere else. Will not return.
Good food but the ambience of the restaurant just doesn’t look or feel like a Japanese restaurant.
Ukai is definitely a neighbourhood gem! Outstanding Japanese fusion cuisine, wonderful friendly service and a menu to satisfy the curious!!
Good food and service
Great place, great food amazeing vibes. The staff is amazeing and very accommodating.
Top dinner! Thanks fo much guys. Anna for president
It was good...
Excellent food and service
Great whiskies and saki
Ukai is a great Japanese fusion experience - wide choice on the menu, staff couldn't be more helpful. I've been twice now, and everything we've ordered has been superb.
It was all very good just a bit loud as we were right by the loud music. However we all enjoyed it and would definitely come again. The cocktails are delicious and food also. May chose a weekday night however !
The food is absolutely fantastic and so is the live music but the service and incredibly loud music between sets lets it down. 3 staff all couldn't find my booking (though I subsequently got a query from opentable asking why I hadn't attended) and the service was friendly enough but we literally had to call the waitresses and the music was so loud we chose to leave before dessert.
Much too noisy! Difficult enough hearing without the band but impossible with deal breaker.
Highly recommended. Great music, intimate atmosphere and fantastic food. Oh...and the cocktail bar is top notch!
Food was marginal at best. Atmosphere was probably what you'd expect from a Kensington/Notting Hill area restaurant. Lots of preppy, new money types who probably wouldn't know good sushi from bad sushi. The service was great. I don't mean to put down the restaurant and the people who work there, because they were pleasant and helpful.
Ukai presents a wide ranging menu of tantalising Japanese inspired dishes perfect for sharing, in a space full of atmosphere, allied to wonderful service. We couldn't fault the whole experience.
