American
Chef Tyler Florence brings his passion for high quality and style to San Francisco with his new flagship restaurant, Wayfare Tavern. A classic San Francisco Tavern featuring authentic American dishes inspired by local cuisine at the turn of the 20th century, the menu ranges from classic comforts to rustic delicacies. The beverage menu features locally-sourced wines including a selection of Florence's own label, quality draft beers and organic root beer as well as classic Victorian-era cocktails.

All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

Took ten minutes to be seated for our reservation time -- in a crowded vestibule with three people manning the reception.

Like stepping back into the days of classic San Francisco dining in the 40’s, with a touch of highbrow southern elegance. Greeted with a surprise birthday card at the table for my friend when we were seated. Super nice touch! At first they just kind of seat you and let you “be” for a spell... to get your bearings and watch all the “goings on” around you. It’s as if you’re being “strapped in” for one of the most excellent dining ride experiences of your life. And that... it was indeed! From the fabulous wine selection, to the PopOver man with the huge basket of hot ones for each table, to the butter lettuce salad with old fashioned SF style Green Goddess Dressing, to that famous moist and crispy FRIED CHICKEN (OMG!) to the sides of Mac n Cheese and Burrata Whipped Potatoes to the special Birthday Plank of freshly made donuts with creme fraiche and berry glaze on the side. We were really taken aback by how much we enjoyed the food and ourselves just being at Wayfare Tavern. Can’t wait to go back. A ‘must do’ in San Francisco!

Awesome food, very good value. Everything we tried was better than expected. Our server also suggested splitting appetizers and entrees, which brought down the final tab by some large margin, and also left room for dessert. The cost rating on OpenTable is wrong, I know many other restaurants that are rated to cost less but actually cost more than this, and the quality at Wayfare Tavern is very hard to replicate.

The only downside is the front desk - the host/hostess would leave the desk for long periods of time and not talk to arriving guests for a long time. Once we were seated (with some delay), the experience totally changed, our waiter was awesome and the dinner ended being one of the best we've had in a long time.

2 of us ordered bouillabaisse...and what we received was cold tasteless and almost inedible. The waiter saw at the end that we had left at least half of the “food” in our bowls but never said a thing.
And before he came to take away our food, the third person had her own disaster. She ordered a cheeseburger well done. The first time it came out it was rate ...very rare. She sent it back and asked that it be cooked longer. By the time they brought her the burger the second time, the other two of us had finished as much of our meals as we were able to eat. This second burger was even more rare and when the waiter asked her how it was she told him it was even more rare but to put it in a box and she would take it home. AND THATS WHAT THEY DID!
Who doesn’t offer to take it off the check?
And then there was the wine. We ordered a nice bottle of Chardonnay and he poured each of us a glass but when he brought the check we had to ask “isn’t there a lot of wine left?” And he ran off and brought back the half full bottle.
This was a $225 meal that was worth the price of the wine-$66 and no more.
We eat out 10 times a month or so for business and pleasure and I cannot day anything positive about this restaurant. I don’t know what happened to it but it has lost its way.

I come here a lot and love it every time. if you book from 12-1:30pm, expect a wait. Its a popular place, what do you do. Chicken should always be part of your order and then the burger. One of the best in SF.

It was a busy Valentine Day start of dinner service. The hostess desk needed some warmth.
The end of service on the dinner was slow. Hard to get in a request for dessert or the check to go!

I spent $175 on quick dinner for 2. We had heavy appetizers and planned to eat most of our entrees next day for lunch. The busboy gave us tickets for our two separate entree left overs. When we got home, he had mixed up the entrees - I don't eat gluten/carbs and my friend doesn't eat red meat so we had to throw them out. These were each more than 1/2 the original portion, as we planned to have the left overs for lunch. Also, there was no water due to construction and we were not able to have water with our meal or coffee after. It would have been nice to be offered a glass of wine or something for the inconvenience.

We had dinner with another couple on a Saturday evening. It was a perfect choice for the evening. The atmosphere is cozy and sophisticated, reminds me of the nice gastropubs we had in London. Lively upbeat crowd, obviously a popular place. We had pork, salmon, risotta and a few sides and apps. The risotta was nothing special apparently but all else was perfect. Delicious. Cocktails and wine good and waiter knowledgeable and helpful. We'll be back and have Wayfare Tavern as a go to for nice evening with excellent cuisine.

I've been to Wayfare Tavern before for dinner and loved it but was underwhelmed by lunch. My vegan salad (with blueberries and pickled red onions) was very good but not a great value for $21. My friend ate less than half of her mushroom risotto. The deviled eggs were lovely but bland. Our server was friendly but didn't check on us much and managed to make all the specials sound unappealing. But I do love the ambiance and was happy to have a quiet (though full) place to carry on a conversation with a friend.

Food was delicious (fried chicken, salmon, pork chop); love the ambience; service disappointedly so-so. Was it because we had already ordered and paid for our ($$) drinks at the bar and didn't order more at dinner? Wait staff at first seemed attentive, then not. 2 dinners came out together; then a delay (watching our food cool down) waiting for the 2 others. Had to request water refills. While hostess had made a big deal about our special occasion (2 birthdays), nothing about that was mentioned at dinner. We certainly didn't need or want any attention for it but seemed odd after the fuss made at check-in.

Top notch on all levels. Alana our server was charming warm efficient and fun to be with. The ticket to pick up your leftovers at the host stand was first rate. The fried chicken, salad and donut were all perfect. Really, a great experience as someone who’s lived in the city for decades. My only complaint was the old wooden chair could have been more comfy.

Vibrant noisy restaurant, high energy. Service was excellent. Food just okay. Disappointed in the chicken, which was touted as "the best" and is a long way from that. Beef tartare was quite good, however, and the Green Goddess dressing on the butter lettuce salad is superb. Overall, a very pleasant evening but wouldn't necessarily come back, given all the other outstanding restaurant choices in the City.
