All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. What Insiders Are Saying
Wayfare Tavern is an old-school spot in the Financial District. And we mean that in the very best way.
The food was excellent and the service was very good. However, noise level was very loud and I could barely hear other people at my table.
I had made a special request for a certain section that the host said she didn't have time to read. We got sat in the less desirable section and she didn't try to fix it. After dinner I asked another host for a matchbook (i collect) and she was quite rude. server was good, food good.
Food wise- I always have a great experience at Wayfare Tavern. I've never had anything here that I didn't like. I always order the fried chicken, but I've started to venture out to the other delicious options they have to offer.
Reservations wise and timeliness- this is now the second time I've had a reservation and had to wait more than 30 minutes for my table to be ready. Totally understand a party can be completely unpredictable as to how long they'll stay, but I'd hope that the restaurant either
A) spaces out their reservations more so new guests aren't waiting so long
B) have servers be more assertive in nudging lingering parties to wrap it up
I really would like to come back more often to try all of their delicious options, but what's the point of making a reservation if it's always late?
A bit expensive, but the food is well worth it! The chicken was incredibly delicious.
Yes. The fried chicken really is that good. But really, everything from the popovers to the salad to the coffee is spot-on. We appreciated the professional and polished wait-staff and the fire-side table. A good experience.
Service was bad. The server took our order including drinks, brought out the small appetizer. Before all of us were finished, they were clearing plates away, reaching over us. Then entrees came out ,still not drinks yet, silverware wasn’t set at all. Told the waiter to slow down and this isn’t Burger King here. We still didn’t have our drinks to enjoy first. Waiter got an attitude and brought manager over and no apologies. Then drinks came and we waited 39 minutes for our entrees to come out.
Big time tourist place. Tyler doesn’t even come into the place ever as the server told us in the beginning.
I would never go back.
We arrived for the reservation for my partner’s birthday dinner and there was a card on the table for him from the restaurant. We ordered (everything delicious as always). Wait staff professional and courteous (wished him happy birthday personally). Good pacing for food. We ordered the cappuccino panna cotta for dessert- delicious (and came out with a candle for him).
Lovely as always, and one of our favorite places in the city!
The food is good/very good but the hostess is awful. I have not been to a mid/upscale restaurant where the hostess has been so unhappy not sure what her issue was.
The server was was nice.
This place has always been a secret, back-pocket type of place. An ace card in my pocket, if you will. It's an institution, and most in the FiDi district know it all too well that it's a busy place. The decor, the ambiance, the food, everything about it takes it up a notch, and it's swanky cool. The staff is always amazing, the place sets the standard of a classic modern SF restaurant. Now, this time around, I noticed a dip in quality of food. Maybe it was an anomaly, but I always get the chicken, and this time it was dry, and my date noticed it as well. Anyways, it won't stop me from going because for me, it's one of my favorite spots in all of SF.
The tables are a little to crowded making conversation difficult, but the waitress was very helpful and patient. I will definitely return
Very good place for business lunch or dinner. Beautiful decor and central location. Food is good, but my chicken was too salty and salad had too much dressing with too much vinegar.
Only problem was I specified gluten free and they didn’t make it gluten free therefore it took a long time to remake and my business date finished their lunch before mine came.
Great food and wonderful service
Great place. A little load for a business lunch meeting, but not horrible to hear. Fantastic wait staff. Food and presentation were fantastic. All 4 of us had the salmon special. Will definitely be back.
Awesome! Excellent meal, great service, loved it!
Great food. Nice SF restaurant with good food. Perfect place for a work dinner.
The food was good ol comfort food. Loved the ambiance too. very cozy and inviting. Feels like you are in someones home.
Excellent all around. The popovers are a special treat. The butter lettuce salad with green goddess dressing was perfect. The fried chicken is famous and rightly so. The service was exceptional. The server made great recommendations and knew exactly what wine and food would go best with the dishes. Fun design -- like a British gentlemen's club.
Excellent food, wonderful service upstairs on more than one occasion. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Great. From the moment we walked in until we left.
Great find. Food was good and portions were Texas size.
We have an amazing experience every time we visit Wayfare Tavern, and this was no different! Amazing food, wonderful service, great cocktails, and a special birthday dessert for my fiance. Thanks y'all!
Best hamburger I’ve ever had. Caramelized onions with melted Brie. Some kind of marmalade on grass fed burger. Fries are excellent but I swapped them for a salad which was good also. Also had chicken salad tartine on another occasion which was excellent. Even though it’s Tyler Florence’s restaurant the prices are very reasonable. Highly recommend.
Wayfare Tavern is an old friend, and never disappoints. I had a new item on the menu, the "vitality bowl," and it was light and delicious. And the popovers are always a huge treat! It's not cheap, but it's worth the price.
Restaurant upstairs was really nice, server very friendly however I found the food portions too big but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing tomsome ppl
Whenever I am in SF I like to make it over to Wayfare Tavern for the fried Chicken and Deviled eggs. Everything is super tasty and the waitstaff is exceptional!! Hand crafted cocktails round out the experience. We always have a great experience. Try everything on the menu especialy the homemade donuts for desert.
Missing the scallops ☹️ would like more seafood options. Fried chicken was awesome! Popovers over the moon!
Our favorite place to come to while visiting San Fran
Went to early dinner after theatre matinee and the famous fried chicken delivered! Will go back every time we're in the City.
While most of our experience was top notch, we encountered some food allergy issues that they were unable to accommodate. This was incredibly frustrating in part because we called in advance to make sure our allergy concern was understood. After being assured that we would be ok, upon arrival we discovered that several dishes, including the ones we had specifically discussed with the staff in advance and wanted to enjoy, were off limits. Perhaps this was just an anomaly given the rotating menu and the needs of cooking equipment and the impact of cross-contamination. Hoping for a better experience next time.
The chicken was great and the house made doughnut was amazing. The ambiance is also wonderful with high-end finishes and decor.
Overall disappointing experience. Rated best fried chicken so couldn’t wait to try. Dry and bland grind chicken, slow service. Best item - popovers they serve before the dinner! Save your money - this food network star location is not worth it.
I can always count on this great place to take an out of town visitor.
I’ve been to Wayfare before but my kids have not and I’ve been telling them about it for years. Celebrating my bday was the perfect reason to take them to this restaurant. Service was exceptional and the food was worth every calorie! Hands down the best popovers and damn those doughnuts were the perfect way to close out the meal and dining experience!
Not what it used to be. Bad across the board. They stopped serving the chocolate cream pie!!! Why?!?!?
Love the feel and atmosphere... had Tyler Florence's famous chicken...sad to say .. it was just ok. I was so wanting to love it...other things on the menu you looked yummy.. we will be back..
Very nice people and the food was very good!
I really wanted to love this place. The decor and location were both great. The bartender(s) were friendly and the brussel sprouts and cocktails were amazing but unfortunately the "famous" fried chicken was sub-par and almost inedible as I felt the crispy outside was over powering in lemon and herb flavoring and the chicken was dry and lacking flavor. I've had better fried chicken at about everywhere else but here, regardless of the different style or take the chef tried to create.
Con: bad service waited over 15mins for water. A waiter came over to our table and poured us some water. No greeting just poured the water and walked away. Another 10 mins or so our waitress finally came to take our drink order. We didn't get their famous bread until our first dish was served.
We got following dishes:
Butter Lettuce Salad (very simple but pretty good)
Mac and Cheese (the cheesy was runny like water) The Tavern Burger (no flavor! How can they charge $25 for this tasteless dish. I had to dip the burger in Ketchup for each bite so I could taste something. The brioche bun did not hold the burger well. After the first bite everything fell apart and the bun was very soggy.) I rather eat an In n Out burger)
The Salmon ( it was ok, not much flavor again. The lentils were under cooked and hard)
Over all very disappointing dining experience. For what they charge it's not worth it.
Loved our very delicious meal here. Service was impeccable !
