All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. What Insiders Are Saying
Wayfare Tavern is an old-school spot in the Financial District. And we mean that in the very best way.
There was a piece of hair in my colleague’s salmon dish.
We were seated 20 minutes past our reservation time, even though there were five open 4-top tables available when we arrived. It took another 20 minutes to get water after being seated; 30 minutes to receive our cocktails, which we ordered once we sat down; 45 minutes and three times asking different wait staff to finally receive bread; also 45 minutes to put in our food orders. Food came out in a good amount of time thankfully, and it was all great. Can't complain about the food, but the service was extremely slow, which would hinder me from going again, as there are plenty of places nearby with great food but much faster service.
I am not a great foodie of fried chicken but I thought the white meat was dry. The leg was juicy.
My wife had the smoke turkey club which was fantastic.
The restaurant was not worth driving from Danville CA. Was recommended by my Son. He thought that Fried chicken was very good.
Oh well, I still like Tyler Florence. Will try his other restaurants.
The food was amazing and I loved the atmosphere! It was the perfect place to celebrate my husband’s 50th birthday!
I really enjoyed my lunchtime experience here. Felt like an adult in a town that increasingly caters to a young, casual tech crowd. A bit old world with massive portions of very flavorful and well-prepared food. Would definitely come again.
Good food. Well executed. Pretty boring menu.
Service rushed us which was not ideal. We asked them to pace the meal out and they brought entrees while we were still eating our starter. Food is good but the service could be better.
We had a 1pm reservation for a client meeting. Due to the bad weather we all barely made it to SF in time and so we arrived in casual travel clothes. Apparently appearance is everything here. We waited to be seated until 1:17 (despite arriving at 12:56) and watched not one, not two, but three groups of 3 professionally attired ladies and gentlemen arrive, ask if they had any availability and be immediately seated. Two individuals (separate parties) were greeted as regulars. I completely understand taking care of your regulars but it got ridiculous. We were told our table had the check and they were just waiting for them to leave...ok. Change my table. Then “let me see if your table is set”. Then, “I had to set your table myself”. Little do you know you’re talking to 2 former F&B managers. We know how this works. Am I supposed to be delighted you decided to seat me at all? Were you doing me a favor? You ignored me, talked about me (audible to my whole party) and then act placating in front of my client who has flown in from Asia for this meeting. It was humiliating. Then, once seated, we were not visited until 1:31 when the server attendant arrived with water. It all just ran downhill from there. I’ve forgotten how pretentious SF restaurants can be but this was a good reminder.
Great place - amazing food. Just wish there were some spots a little quieter when we invite clients!
Amazing lunch at Wayfare Tavern from start to finish! Service was great. We will be back!! Thank you for a memorable afternoon😊
The food was delicious and the service was impeccable. I noted on the reservation that it was a birthday celebration and the staff went out of their way to make my guest feel special.
The food is consistently good, but the drinks are not always good. The iced tea is often extremely bitter. Hot tea service is good. Cocktails are generous and well crafted, but expensive. Wine service is good. Desserts are always interesting, but sometimes is seems like there has been more thought given to presentation than to taste.
Absolutely Fabulous on all counts. The food was creative and delicious. Our Waiter was very personable and informative, and did a great job. It reminded me of being in New York at a great restaurant/tavern in an old house or building. We look forward to going back again.
While the food was generally good and the server was attentive, informed and polite the courses were so drawn out that it made for an unpleasant experience.
I have been dining here for a year or so with my two gal friends ... It's our restaurant of choice after theater matinees ... The food is beyond exceptional ... Love the roasted marrow bone, their hamburger is to die for as is the brussel sprouts! It's the staff that makes us return and return ... Danny makes us feel like we are family ... Borach(?) (not sure of his name spelling )makes dining a pleasure ... He guides us through the menu ... We share stories and laughter! These are the reasons I brought my sister and her husband on the 16th ... Great way to start the evening before seeing HAMILTON ... A must visit for all! Beverly , San Jose
Great table, great server (Tom) and great food (popovers!).
Our waiter was amazing and the experience was just as expected. I tried the new mussel dish and was blown away. And who would have thought pickled blueberries on bone marrow would work? It does!
Always love this place! Have been here many times great food/wine.
Everything was great . . . except the deviled eggs. The experiment with the beet infused eggs was a fail. Color was foul, and taste was disappointing. Please end this experiment and return to one of your wonderful variations.
Went here for dinner before going to a show. We loved the atmosphere inside. Three of us ordered the fried chicken and one person had the pork chop. All of us enjoyed our meal, however our server was less than enjoyable. He came to ask my dad how his drink was (a drink recommended by the server) and my dad commented that it was sweet. Instead of offering him a new drink he proceeded to tell my dad why he shouldn’t think it was sweet and listed the ingredients. He also stopped us from ordering any side dishes until he heard our entree orders so that he could decide what we should do. Unfortunately he didn’t feel like any of our opinions mattered and that we should only order what he thought was best. Turned what could have been a nice meal into an annoying one.
Fun happenings place. We both had the famous fried chicken. IT was good nothing to memorable. SIde like mashed potatoes fair along with the peanut butter cheese cake.
Flat out wrong cocktails all around, another 15 minutes. 3 of 4 plates, another 10 minutes for the last plate. Awkward.
Always wonderful , great place to catch up w friends and business associates!
Fantastic. GM was on fire. Everything was fabulous!
Attentive staff and friendly atmosphere. Limited menu with mostly hits - have the burratta mashed potatoes and fried chicken!
Floor manager - tall thin gentleman - was so rude. Why is he so sour? Our reservation was at 6 pm we didn’t get seated until almost 6:30 pm. We didn’t complain - why was he the terrible one. The energy was off & negative. The server was harsh until we asked him if everything was ok and we had to ask three people for a table wedge - the floor manager looked and acted like he was going to rip our faces off. We drank and ate - a lot - and I had two bosses in town who asked to go there. Why so terrible towards us? I live here!!!
Brussel sprouts and poutine were excellent. Surprised that fried chicken was so dry. Tasty, but dry. Very nice restaurant.
Server was surprisingly and continuously inattentive, the rest of the service was great.
Food was amazing, aside from the fried chicken “having a great, flavorful crust, but dry meat”.
Tables a tad to close together. Service and food great! Bartender very welcoming!
A well worth visit when in San Francisco and a repeat dinner quest over the years. Menu has dishes well worth retuning for and great additions. Food has always been top notch, it can be a little noisy but the atmosphere is great. The staff has never missed a step and are very professional and prompt.
Food was great. Its popularity probably affects the ability for staff to give really attentive service. Our waiter was nice, and no strong complaint. Staff seemed stressed and struggling to keep up with all around them.
Great service, great ambiance, nice cocktails! It's the best brunch spot in SF that is hip, and classy without the hipster attitude!
Excellent from start to finish. Service and level of attentiveness we perfect. Food was, as always, Phenomenal. It was my Boyfriends birthday, he was welcomed with a “happy birthday”, and surprised with a sweet treat and a candle at the end of dinner. It was a perfect night.
My husband and I always have a wonderful experience at Wayfare! It’s one of our favorite restaurants in the city. We always look forward to the pop overs and love the fried chicken and whipped potatoes. My only wish is that they would bring back burgundy wines on the menu!!
You won’t go wrong here — wonderful service and food.
Our waiter was most unhelpful with the menu, pressured us to order, then made us feel like we overstayed our welcome. He came back 3 times in 5 minutes once he placed the check. And the staff started setting tables for dinner, including the one adjoining ours. There were other diners still there as well, and it was only 3:30 in the afternoon when we finished eating. We couldn't have felt more unwelcome if he'd simply said "Get out, now!" Food was good, but the service destroyed the entire experience. This was my 3rd time at Wayfare Tavern, and I'll never go back.
Wayfare Tavern is a wonderful place to bring clients or friends. I highly recommend it. Don't miss the popovers!
Slightly contrived atmosphere, saved by the cuisine. Every dish was SUPERB.
