Best Greek Restaurants in North Beach, San Francisco Bay Area

Very pleasant setting and ambiance. Attentive staff.

One word: WOW!! Everyone we spoke to said it’s amazing — they were right. The restaurant opened at 5:00, and we had a 5:45 reservation. We were seated immediately, and the place was already packed. Our server, Thierry, was fantastic. He was very open with his recommendations and the reason for them. We were not disappointed. We started with the spanikopita (if you don’t like flakey buttery phyllo, don’t order this, but if you do, don’t miss this). The ratio of cheese to pastry dough was perfect. I also ordered the Dolmathes — I ate two at dinner, and two the next morning! We then enjoyed an incredibly fresh tasting Greek salad. My wife had the souvlaki — it was cooked to perfection. I’m not a big lamb guy, but this was amazing, and it didn’t have the gamey lamb taste. I ordered the whole grilled sea bass, and it was spectacular. It was reminiscent of a similar dish I had in Croatia about 10 years ago. We ended the meal with the Baklava — another fantastic job by the chef. You can’t reserve more than a month in advance — make yours as exactly one month in advance or you’ll miss out. Don’t!!

My wife and I really enjoyed our dinner at Penaber Mediterranean. The food was delicious and the service was warm and friendly. It is a very small, cozy restaurant perfect for an intimate dinner without being overly formal. The flavors in the food that they prepared for us were delightful, truly tasted like old family recipes. We will certainly do our best to dine there again when we next visit San Francisco. We highly recommend!!
