Mother Tucker, or Mama Lisa as she was affectionately called by the workers, was a remarkable woman who played a vital role in the construction of the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. Born in 1789 in Ireland, she immigrated to Canada with her husband John Tucker, a carpenter, in 1816. They settled in Bytown, a small town that would later become Ottawa, and opened a boarding house near the canal site.Mama Tucker was known for her kindness, generosity, and culinary skills. She cooked for Colonel By's men, who were mostly Irish immigrants like herself, and served them hearty meals of stew, bread, and tea. She also provided them with comfort and care, tending to their wounds, illnesses, and grievances. She was a mother figure to many of the workers, who often faced harsh conditions, discrimination, and danger while building the canal.

    We had a great experience at Tucker's for their Mother's Day Brunch Buffet. The price was reasonable, especially considering the quality of food. They had Made-To-Order stations for their pancakes and omelettes, which meant all the options we got from those areas were as fresh as can be. Additionally, they had a wide variety of options in their buffet sections from classic breakfast options to unique snacks and sides, the marinara mussels were to die for. We also had the most wonderful server, who made our experience really stand out. He was knowledgeable, and had great recommendations for items to look out for in the dessert section. The other serving staff were also wonderful, ensuring to clear our empty plates and glasses very quickly after setting them aside.

    The service was impeccable, friendly and attentive and most importantly he was completely bilingual. Our party had both French and English guests and the server switched back and forth with ease and accuracy. The food was fabulous, warm well cooked. The fruit and cheeses were fresh and well taken care of. It was for my mother’s birthday and the server made the extra effort to go over and above to make her feel special.
